"We were positive and in the dressing room the talk was about going for a chase" : Babar Azam

Babar Azam speaking to the press:

Was Pakistan too defensive?

"In my view, we played positive cricket; We always play according to the match situation and not needlessly play shots; We fought outstandingly in the three matches"

Do the pitches need to be improved and proper 7th position batter not played?

"The pitch and conditions were same for both sides so the pitch was fine"

"We decided to play an extra bowler as we wanted more pace, and Naseem Shah did an outstanding job in the first innings; Our mindset was to play a bowler with more pace and I feel we were successful in our plan about this"

Were you trying to win the game?

"The plan was to build momentum and based on the game situation, we would think about a win after Tea; But once our wickets fell and we had some soft dismissals then our plan became to do as best we could; We went in with a positive mind and in the dressing room the talk was about going for a chase"

Hassan Ali

"Sometimes you try your best but things don't happen for you which is part of the game as you can have ups and downs but I have full faith in Hassan Ali; He has always played good cricket and won us matches and as captain I have the same belief in his abilities as I had before"

Saw this lie coming, mentioned it in the match thread.

Babar can fool the gullible but not the ones with intelligence - at no point in this run chase did Pakistan think about chasing the total.

Who's buying this nonsense. You played for a 0-0 draw from Day 1 of this series.

Babar is a timid and cowardly captain. When you are batting at strike rate of 30-35, that is not positive cricket. Who is he trying to fool?

I must say he is lying. Babar got it all wrong in this series.
I have never seen pak play so cowardly and it began with him agreeing to play on doctored pitches.
His decision to stick with fawad in last test proves he's incapable of strong decision making.
What is this nonsense about backing hasan ali irrespective of his form?? Is this his friends 11? Already we got imam and azhar from his friend circle

His interview is predictable and understandable. But, Pakistan didn't seem positive at all. They seemed timid overall.

Ever since Imran Khan retired, Pakistan have failed to identify an individual that can successfully lead a team.

There’s only one man that warrants the captaincy role, Shaheen Afridi.

Honestly I am absolutely fuming 😡 from inside Im lost for words by this debacle and pathetic display.

Babar is the worst captain ever. For such a player to player the game like a coward just sums him up.

He needs to go simple. Bottom line is Australia deserved to win and went for the win hence why Cummins is rated to high as a captain and player. The guy never plays for a draw always looking to make positive moves..

Babar needs to be dropped from t20s for a start and needs to be sacked as captain so he can reevaluate his job in the team as just a player..

I’d even drop him for a series or two just to teach him a lesson for playing such cowardly cricket at home. Absolute shambles.

Even Lyon is 10 times the spinner compared to the pakistan uncles sajid and nauman.

How is Babar backing the tik tok dancer. I hope we lose the odis too. Such a pathetic captain he is.

But you played like you wanted to draw on all 15 days.

No one can be fooled The whole mindset was negative from day 1 I mean it took them 2 days to put up 450 declared in pindi

The strategy seemed to be Lets see where we are Defend first, not take any chancez, the slow pitches Be wary of aus quicks

There was hardly any intent as the home team to grab the series play positive and play to win

Australia if anything seemed more at home and confident than the pakistan team ever did who throughout the series looked like cats caught in headlight and afraid to step up the intensity and challenge the pakistan players to perform and put pressure back on the aussies

This is classic Babar. I remember in one PSL match, he scored 4 boundaries in last over to improve his strike rate to 130 after playing 60 odd balls and scoring 80 odd runs. When Sajid Khan arrived, he scored a boundary once or twice only. Before that, there was no f intent. Thats a lie and now the coward is hiding behind it. he is anything but a lion. An insecure, small mind player who would be set to retire as Misbah 2.0.

Slow pitches
Slow score on dead pitches
Negative outside leg stump line to Aussie Batsman when they couldnt pickup wickets

The whole mind set was to not let Aussies win instead of winning this series yourself. And Aussies ended up doing what he feared most anyway. Really hate him for lacking guts.

Babar talking absolute rubbish, so imam and Azhar blocking half volleys and scoring at 1 rpo was being positive was it?

gutless captain who needs his balls to drop and act like a man. The team was carrying 5 or 6 passengers each game.

At what point they were thinking to chase? They were scoring at 2ish run rate. If there was any intention to chase, they would've tried to aim for 3.5 -4 . There was absolutely no intention and they were hoping for a draw. We got lucky in 2nd test because of few drops

When winning is an afterthought you will more often than not lose.

Pakistan went into the series hoping for a 0-0 and ended up with egg on their face.

Thoroughly awful planning, tactics and approach.

Babar rues 'soft dismissals' in Pakistan's defeat to Australia

Babar Azam was left to rue "soft dismissals" but says he has "full faith" in Pakistan after they suffered a 1-0 Test series defeat to Australia.

Nathan Lyon claimed 5-83 and the magnificent Pat Cummins took 3-23 as the tourists bowled Pakistan out for 235 on the final day to win by 115 runs at Gaddafi Stadium.

Imam-ul-Haq made 70 and the brilliant Babar 55, but Pakistan crumbled from 142-2 as Lyon snaffled a 19th five-wicket Test haul and man of the match Cummins finished with match figures of 8-79.

Captain Babar knows Pakistan only have themselves to blame after watching Australia get their hands on the Benaud-Qadir Trophy.

He said: "We didn't go defensive, we played positive cricket. You plan according to the situation. It's not like you go out, play big shots and go for the runs.

"We had a good session early in the day, but unfortunately we had soft dismissals and that's the reason we lost the game.

"We had a simple plan: to take the momentum in hand first and then think [about chasing the victory] after the tea. After lunch, we had a plan to play normal cricket.

"We weren't able to decide whether to go for a win or a draw. But with all those wickets falling, we decided to go deep as much as we could, but we were positive throughout.

"There were continuous discussions in our dressing room about chasing it down. But when your main batters are dismissed, you obviously start thinking differently.

"Still, Sajid [Khan] and I were trying to build a partnership and extend as much as we could, hoping we could draw. Yet we never held back, kept on playing shots and utilised whatever came in our area. So the mindset was positive but it didn't go in our way."

Babar is totally behind his players and is not contemplating making changes.

He added: "Overall the series went well, especially the Karachi Test where we dominated and saved the match. Unfortunately, I got out but even then we had our mindset on chasing.

"But mistakes are part of the game and it's too early to think about changes [to the team]. We don't have to forget their recent performances.

"Our entire team is experienced now, we have developed a good combination and I have full faith in them."

Maybe the talk was in Klingon.

Hard for any normal person to decode the positive message of the dressing room.

Babar is truely deluded.

1) 1st session was good? we batted like snails

2) plan was to attack after tea?

The req run rate was 3 so instead lets block for 2 sessions let rate climb and then have a go?

How stupid can you get. Hes right up there with moin khan as worst pakistan captain for me.

Negativity going into the last day. The same mindset throughout the series which meant that Pakistan lost.

I didn't see much positivity at all in the series.

What I saw was a team hoping to win and another team believing they could win.

He also said Pakistan dominated all 3 test matches and lost due to only a single post lunch session on day 15. :))

I have always given Babar benefit of the doubt that he isn't as naive, uninsightful, and banal as he sounds because he isn't comfortable in front of the camera . . but now I am starting to think he is near delusional . . his lack of ability to analyze a game, what happened, etc. and the sheer repetition of the script he reads out in his media talks is very concerning . . Idk if he's a tactical genius/brilliant man manager off the field, but his thoughts on media are incredibly tough to listen to.

Also, it was abundantly clear this entire series that there was only one that team that was playing to win!! If Babar and co. don't realize that, we have a bigger problem that we think . .

The Captain is the most important individual in the team, even more so than the Coaches and even the Chairman. When the team goes to the field it is all the captain. Kohli as captain would have done equally well without any coaches.

Sadly Babar looks badly out of his depth now, he is clearly a misfit for the job. PCB should put him out of his misery and actually give the job to someone with actual leadership qualities.

Poor guy has no idea what he's talking about. I feel bad for him because he's just not a thinking cricketer. It is not his fault tbh. He was thrusted in the captaincy role just because he was the best player in the team. Did he ever show an inkling of strong leadership skills, cricketing acumen or strategic thinking? How can he now expect him to make smart decisions on the field?

He's saying they we dominated the Karachi test match! fgs!

I can't see too many leaders in the squad.

The only alternative could be Mohammad Rizwan.

Also, I can't really get on the Rizwan-the-brilliant-captain bandwagon just yet either. A 15 year old can captain a side in a T20 and tbf, Rizwan has mainly been praised for backing his team mates and showing calmness. There hasn't been any indication of him being a tactical genius or such.

Not saying that he won't be a good captain, but he very well can be just like Babar.

Shadab should be made the skipper. He needs to be in the test team he’s far better then these uncles. No sure why he was dropped in first place.

So this clearly shows they were never going to go for the win. Such cowards and mental midgets.

He looks out of his depth as captain, hes failing to inspire and lead his team from the front or set high standards to achieve

What is babars ethos? What cricket culture is he promoting?

If he seriously thinks pakistan played well, positively and were unlucky in the series than im afraid he doesnt have a scooby do as captain

We were extremely defensive in the t20 World Cup too. Were lucky to reach semifinal. Babar stuck with Hasan despite his poor form and didn’t bring in Nawaz even against scotland. That tells you about his defensive nature.

Day started with 10 wickets in hands and 90 overs with RR of 3.

Playing at 2-3 runs per over is not really playing fast. That's just normal cricket. Faster rate will take some effort, but Pakistan batted 1-2 runs per over in the first session.

Pakistan played 15 days of cricket to some how get 0-0.

who is babar azam trying to fool exactly?

The mistakes aren't what is concerning, what is concerning is Babar's inability to see and realize the mistakes.

Those who are saying that he's lying or fooling the fans are giving him too much credit. He is 100% convinced that Pakistan played the right brand of cricket and played they way they should have.

He just does not understand captaincy.

I’m not convinced that Pakistan were going for the win. Once again they played very slowly.

i made a thread before. Babar Azam is a bonga and aloof captain. Apart from his batting skills he does not have the ability to think beyond 1+1 = 2.

we need a captain who doesnt look like a complete bonga in the field and in decision making. we need someone ruthless who doesnt select based on friendships and comfort level

hasan ali kept on getting selected despite being out of form because of babar
azhar ali keeps on getting selected because of babar
imam keeps getting selected because of babar
sajid khan keeps getting selected because of babar
nauman ali keeps getting selected because of babar

there is ZERO. absolutely ZERO intelligence in his decision making. I think all cricket fraternity in Pakistan knows this that Babar Azam is only an intelligent batter but zero beyond it. Even while batting he has zero intelligence to farm the strike away from Sajid Khan. ZERO.

The first session was the key.

If Pakistan had attacked a bit more that would have put pressure on Australia.

Instead Pakistan went into their shells and gave Australia exactly what they wanted.

Defensive approach, weak leadership and a meek surrender.

To be honest this press conference proves Babar Azam needs to be kicked out of his captaincy and Moyo and Saqlain needs to be fired.

The press conference was more embarassing than the match itself. my God what a brainless statement

Noones asking to throw your team members under the bus but At least show your displeasure at the result and hold yourself and your team to a higher standard

The fact the home captain of pakistan chooses not to see this series as a poor result is mind boggling

No shock really, lost a wicket and the run rate vampire Azhar came out and sucked the life out of the inns. Pakistan could have been scoring at 6 runs per over and as soon as this leach comes in he kills its for the team.

Ever since Imran Khan retired, Pakistan have failed to identify an individual that can successfully lead a team.

There’s only one man that warrants the captaincy role, Shaheen Afridi.

I'd make Shaheen Shah Afridi the captain and Abdullah Shafiq the Vice Captain. Its time we look for the future.

This approach is so obvious nearly everyone was calling for it. Why can’t the team or management think like this. It’s not quantum physics. Simple stuff. Have a word with them Saj

Babar's captaincy reminds me of Sachin's tenure as captain in my teenage years. His game awareness is average and he is too self absorbed to motivate his teammates to do better. PCB should release Babar from captaincy and set him free so that he can focus on being the best batsman he can be with a tunnel vision. I think he can contribute more to Pakistan cricket that way.

If pakistan was going for the won, than on day 5, azhar and abdullah shafique would had not batted at a snail place. The overnight set up score, we threw that awy just to slow down.

Someone needs to tell azhar and shafique to pace their innings. The captain doesnt have the authority. Change the captain for gods sake

This is also the result of not have a a full time coach. Hence, rameez raja is main culprit

What are talking you about . Shafique got out on the 4th over of day 5 . It takes 4 overs for even Australians to get started

If we are gonna bash azhar ali for battinf slow, than atleast start applying same standards for abdullah

93 test matches vs someone who hasn’t played total over 10 fc matches including tests. Shafique has shown in psl he can play his shots and will in future. You cannot compare the 2 .

Now that's a shameless lie. :murali

I don't think he can fool anyone with this.

Utter nonsense , only one team played positive cricket, other was just carrying Misbah's legacy.

Babar's superiors - ie PCB Admin - must question the whole attitude.

We ended day 4 on 73/0 thinking we were done. Fact was, as Pat Cummins said in his presser, the real challenge would come after the 35th over when the ball would reverse.

Would it not have been a smarter move to smash the bowling and end up with 130-140 by end of Day 4 to put pressure on Australia?

Pakistan under Babar messed up the 4th innings.

The strategy, performance and result are one thing, but these can go wrong on occasion and that’s the reality of elite professional sport.

What I find more concerning and worrying is that there is no reflection, humility or awareness from Babar / Team Pak / etc after just being heavily beaten in a home Test match and losing a series. They are telling a different story to the press and glossing over all of the issues.

This is reminiscent how Chris Silverwood would react to England getting yet another caning, for example in the Ashes he said that he would have chosen the same squad, the same lineups and done nothing different with his planning despite being 0-3 down half way through the tour and there being blatant tactical and selection errors in each loss.

That level of stubbornness in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary is when you know someone’s time is up.

The audacity to lie. I just want to hate him but I can't as I love him. He is not helping with this attitude. No sense of accepting mistakes. Pathetic. Small. Cheap. & rude to the fans who love him.

Exactly ..He may be inferior in batting talent to that of babar but he is right person to take up captaincy ..The earlier failure in career usually result in learning so many things and situation which won't come to talented and successful babar's way ..Rizwan is certainly a good candidate for captaincy as Sourav Ganguly was right choice ahead of Sachin..

What ridiculous comments by Babar.

The guy is a joke. What is he talking about? Since when were Pakistan dominating Australia? Is he really that delusional? Then I have no hope for Pakistan cricket.

I hope someone, somewhere tells him what moronic comments he made.

I think Azhar's and Rizwan's decisions were dubious. But, Pakistan made many errors in selection, pitch, and defensive play so at the end a better team won.

Babar bhai, with all due respect, please respect the fans intelligence as well.

How can you be positive when you were at the mercy of Australia declaring their second innings both tests to give you a beggar's chance of drawing the match?

Your bowlers can't get 10 wickets in home conditions, the batters can't bat after having best first-class stats at home. These statements by Babar are daylight robbery to hide the weakness of his team.

They came , they saw - they conquered,

Someone needs to grill the coach and captain

Does babar really think the series performance at home was acceptable?

Like a poster said you try and build a fortress at home A good team doesnt lose series in this way at home hardly throwing a punch back

Our leading wicket taker in 3 tests was shaheen with 9
Hasan Ali took 2 wkts
They shouldve lost karachi test too
The tail folded like a pack of cards esch time they had to bat
We batted like snails and never showed any intent to put aus under pressure
The pitches were dead

Their batters outperformed ours, their bowlers outperformed ours, their captain outperformed ours

Is this really a good performance by a proud cricketing nation
Wheres the pride, wheres our standards gone?

Nothing will happen, seems like they are gearing up to gift LOIs too with their love and affection for Australia, being grateful for their visit after 24 years...

4-5 of the aussie batters had strike rates at 50 or more through the series

None of our batters batted with a strike rate that high None

One team came to play positive and win the series away from home The other played like scared cats in their own backyard

The gratefulness shouldve stopped as soon as they got on the pitch

And if babar cant install a positive mentality on the players than they should get someone else in that can

Babar said Pakistan dominated all three test matches and only lost because of one session on the last day.

It's scary if he really believes that, instead of just saying that for PR. How will a team improve if they think they dominated every match.

Which match did Pakistan dominate?

When did Pakistan attack in the 3rd Test chase?

I think I must have been watching the wrong series.

Don't think it's PR. They all believe it, including Babar himself.

After being ridiculed for 150 all out on a batting wicket, he is saying they dominated the second test. This is the level of glorified mediocrity we've stooped to.

Babar is a high class batter. Because he has skill on how to weave the bat. That's really about it and that's where it ends for him unfortunately.

Beyond that, he's still a product of Pakistani society, and our system. And therefore he's not articulate, has tunnel vision, doesn't see the big picture, and surrounds himself with senior players because doesn't have the balls to go against the mafia. Asking him to become a magical leader is too much of an ask realistically.

What a gem, love this Australian team , Cummins in particular. I'm a big fan of players and team who play positive cricket.

If we are gonna bash azhar ali for battinf slow, than atleast start applying same standards for abdullah

I agree to some extent but we got to take in consideration that how many tests he played.

He's saying they we dominated the Karachi test match! fgs!

How xan you feel bad? He couldve said no... also what else has he done other then cricket? Still hes not a high iq player lol

Babar said Pakistan dominated all three test matches and only lost because of one session on the last day.

It's scary if he really believes that, instead of just saying that for PR. How will a team improve if they think they dominated every match.

That comment from babar sums it up.

How can you be dominating when the other team is having to declare and set you a total lol

He is beyond delusional and needs to be sacked as captain asap

Which match did Pakistan dominate?

When did Pakistan attack in the 3rd Test chase?

I think I must have been watching the wrong series.

As they say, if you start believing a lie, eventually you think its the truth!

Babar needs to snap out of it - asap!

So this clearly shows they were never going to go for the win. Such cowards and mental midgets.

To really go for the win they needed a bit more positivity in the early sessions.

You can't let Australia do whatever they want for 2 sessions and just hope to miraculously be in a winning position.

A bit more intent may have reduced the amount of attacking fielders oz could place and changed the pressure equation tilted back on Oz, changed the lines they bowled etc.

The target was small enough that just a small accumulation started earlier can shift things.

Babar doesn't have the mind to bat alongside the lower order. Gets inside his shell and appears confused on whether to trust his partners or not. Inzi was a master at playing with the tail. Would counterattack in those situations. Younis also became better at adapting his batting. Babar just goes on the defense and asks the tail to defend as well.

Pakistan are falling for he gimmick of positive PR, they are trying to put a positive spin on everything and its getting a bit sickly now. From the hand written lists on the wall which the batters ignore as soon as they come out to the silly social media posts Babar needs to get a grip of this team and turn them into a more ruthless outfit, seems like its the taking part that counts for them at the moment.

I think people are over reacting, The kind of wickets that were prepared result in toss being a big factor and team winning the toss more than likely go on to win the match.

Same happened to India against England in the last tour where on a similar wicket England won the toss and won the match. The difference being India made sure they made turners from there on to negate the toss advantage.

Additionally on flatter tracks Australia are a better side by a margin which we knew even before the series begins. Australia only weakness is turning wickets which they did not get on this tour.

Golden chance missed by Pak. defensive mindset..

At home in known home conditions, u'd back pak to prevail over a SENAW side. Am surpirsed pak did'nt go for Shadab - a better spinner than the two on display, defo a better bat and fielder.
Big gain is wonderful bowling of nassim Shah, Shaheen sha afridi and the batting of the young gun Shafique.

People are understandably disappointed but this is actually the most accurate assessment. Toss was the biggest factor here.
Not saying Pakistan couldn't have played better cricket but biggest blame should 100% go to pcb for preparing these hopeless wickets.
