Mickey Arthur speaking to the media today:

Look I think it is going to be a formidable World Cup. There are seven teams that can seriously win it.

My head says that England and India are the favourites but Pakistan and South Africa are the next 2 for me, so that will be my top 4; India, England, Pakistan and South Africa

For us this isn’t so much about us and Australia; it’s about the final couple of positions for the World Cup and the opportunities that have been created for a lot of our bench.

We need to find what our next players are in every position and if we can do that out of this series, then this series will be a success for us

When we designed this series, a long while ago, we designed it with the fact that we are going to test our bench strength

This series didn’t just happen, there was planning that went into it; Sometimes people think its adhoc, that we sort of make it up as we go

This series has been planned so we can test the bench strength, we could have a look at our combinations

We know who our major players are going to be at the World Cup, but this series will sort out the final couple of places

Once we are finished here, we are going to into some testing and some camps in Lahore

We will be going to England with a very well settled squad, one that knows where it exactly stands in terms of its role etc and we would have done everything we possible could to be have the best preparation for the World Cup

But as I have said to the boys, this is a series of opportunity and we don’t have to be rocket-scientists to work out that there are couple of positions available for the World Cup

This is an opportunity for these young players to put their hands up, some not so young and try and make those places their own

Sarfaraz Ahmed needs rest as do Babar Azam and all the guys who are resting such as Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan

I have been telling the Australian boys that we have been in hotels since the 12 of September last year, so we would have been stupid if just kept on playing our guys; if we keep on playing our guys, they will get injured, they will get injured and they will also have fatigue; We have a series in England which will be a perfect preparation for us going into the World Cup

So, we would be silly not to use this month to rest our most valuable assets for what is the biggest challenge of all, the World Cup

Australia are a fantastic side; they have sort of bubbled away and are playing some really good cricket at the moment

To comeback from 2-0 down in India, and to win that series by a 2-3 margin is a fantastic achievement

They have some fine players; We speak about Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon has bowled well, Pat Cummins is in good nick and they have a couple of youngsters

I am sure they will be resting and rotating through the series; there is no such thing as a weak Australian team

This squad would probably be the most settled squad sent for a world cup in decades.

For once ,no controversies before a world cup

No bowlers called for chucking just before the world cup (Ajmal 2015)
No captains or bowlers suspended for spot fixing (Butt, Amir, Asif 2010)
with MoYo and Malik Glaring omissions for the worldcup squad of 2011. Imagine if they were playing in 2011 world cup semi final in Mohali, instead of Shafiq and Younus Khan/Misbah.

No bowlers suspended for drugs ( Asif, Akhtar 2007)

The question is that even if anyone of the replacements perform well, how will Mickey find a place for them in the "settled" squad. Is he willing to drop the likes of Hafeez, Malik, Fakhar, Aamir, etc.?

They are supposed to warm the bench just incase one of these get injured or lose their form.

11 players aren't enough you need 15 good players to win such a tourney.

We've lost our best bowlers everyrime. Hafeez in 2015 too

I think he used the term squad which essentially means 15 players which will most likely be:

1. Fakhar
2. Imam
3. Shaan
4. Babar
5. Hafeez
6. Malik
7. Haris
8. Akmal
9. Sarfraz
10. Shadab
11. Imad
12. Faheem
13. Aamir
14. Hassan
15. Shaheen

Who will Mickey drop let's say if Abid Ali hits 3 centuries in this series?

Still the most baffling thing for me was Malik and Yousuf not in that world cup squad playing the semis against INDIA in Mohali. Especially when they were instrumental in defeating India in the champions trophy the last time the 2 teams met. Malik and Yousuf for Younis/Shafiq/Misbah.....

With a "Settled Squad" like this, Pakistan would be very fortunate to win this World Cup.

If we pick the following team for England then I would be happy:

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Imam-ul-Haq
3. Babar Azam
4. Haris Sohail
5. Shoaib Malik
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed
7. Shadab Khan
8. Umer Khan
9. Hassan Ali
10. M Abbass
11. M Hasnain
12. F Ashraf
13. Ahmed Shehzad
14. Shaheen Afridi
15. Umar Akmal

Hope the rest somehow helps Shadab. Been woeful and since the selectors are not trying other spinners( other than Yasir), we need him at his best if we want to compete in WC.

If malik and Yousuf were playing , Pakistan would have won the WC , because they both were good players of spin , and could rotate strike easily

Rightly said.

Guy is delusional. The is a very unsettled squad. Our middle order and lower order is a joke.

As always the batting will be our biggest concern. No matter what bowlers we take our attack will be amongst the best. A leg spinner in England always does well yet I can't think of one at the moment.

It is very strange when you say this and rest your senior players. Pakistan has been struggling with ODI combination for sometime now and has not won a series against a top side for a while. Failed to make the finals in Asia cup, Lost to South Africa, drew against New Zealand etc. Now the coach says that Pakistan will get to England with a settled squad when they are not even playing their first choice XI 2 months before the World Cup. One of the players rested has been having horror run in ODIs for sometime now.

not just batting, Malik would probably have caught tendulkar's catch as well.

First opportunity coming tomorrow for Arthur (& team PAK) .....
