"We will have to be very wary of the bad habits that might creep in during the IPL" : Virat Kohli

Visakhapatnam: India captain Virat Kohli Saturday had a clear message for all his World Cup bound teammates -- don't pick up bad (technical) habits during IPL and manage workload carefully, taking games off whenever necessary during the cash-rich league, starting 23 March.

Kohli, who has developed a tunnel vision as far as the World Cup is concerned, doesn't want the India stars plying their trade for various franchises, to drift too much from their ODI game plan during the seven-week league that ends on 12 May.

India play their opening World Cup game against South Africa on 5 June in Southampton, exactly 23 days after IPL ends.

"They have to make sure that their games don't go (drift) too much away from the one-day mould of things. That means we will have to be very wary of the bad habits that might creep in during the IPL," Kohli told reporters ahead of their first T20I against Australia.

The national team's interest has always been paramount for Kohli and accordingly, he also wants his teammates to make that effort during IPL.

"That (not picking up bad habit) will take a consistent effort from all the players during the IPL to keep a check on that. The moment you enter the nets and create bad habits, you lose the momentum and you lose batting form. It is very difficult to get it back in a tournament like the World Cup," Kohli warned his teammates about te innovative shots that are in vogue during the league.

The BCCI is yet to reach a common ground with the franchises on the workload management of the IPL bound players but Indian captain wants his men to be "responsible" and not over-exert themselves.

"If your team is in a great position during the tournament, you don't mind taking 2-3 games off also. It all depends on how you feel physically but everyone has to be really honest about it to themselves and accordingly see how they feel and not push themselves to the limit that might hamper the Indian team later on," Kohli made it clear as to what he wants from teammates.

The hectic schedule of IPL which includes a lot of travelling can take a toll on the health of the players and the skipper is a bit wary about that.

"The amount you practice, with the amount of travel during the IPL and the number of games in different conditions, in different temperatures, it is going to be challenging, to be honest," Kohli said.

"As a cricketer, you have to map out how many practice sessions you really need. If you are hitting the ball well, there is no need to go to a practice session and tire yourself out for three hours whereas you can utilise that particular phase to rest and recover even more," said Kohli, who will be donning Royal Challengers Bangalore jersey for the 12th year.

For Kohli, he is ready to walk the talk when he leads RCB in the IPL.

"I would look to continue in the same way that I have in all formats over the years and not do anything fancy. Frame of mind is the most important thing getting into the World Cup, and we need 15 people who are confident and mentally happy.

Sensible comments from kaptaan, i hope RCB, MI and CSK fail and are out of top 4 contention so that they can concentrate on Wc19.

I hope bumrah gets burnt out. He is the only one I fear in that team other than the king. But even the king can be nullified

The India captain said his side needed clarity over "what they want" during the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and said that performances in the Indian Premier League will not influence team selection for the 50-over tournament.

"I don't see IPL influencing the World Cup selection," said Virat Kohli on Friday, on the eve of the first one-day international against Australia. "That would be very radical analysis.

"We need to have a solid team before we head into IPL. We need to be clear as to what we want during the World Cup. If one or two players don't have a good IPL season, it doesn't mean the picture for the World Cup will change."

India will be playing a five-match ODI series against Australia and this will be Kohli and co's last ODI series before the World Cup. Hence, the hosts will be looking to experiment with the available squad, which might also mean giving chances to a player like Rishabh Pant, who has only played three ODIs for India.

Kohli admitted that his side will have to consider the balance of the side, however, and doesn't believe a batsman should be included ahead of a bowler.

"We will have to think about the combinations," Kohli added. "I don’t think playing a bowler less is a good idea because with the extra fielder in till the 40th over, it becomes very difficult to get a few guys to chip in with a few overs here and there.

"We will have to work out the batting combination to try and give game-time to the guys we want to, but I don’t see the bowling combination changing."

There is still uncertainty over Pant's selection in the World Cup squad, but KL Rahul, who was impressive in the recently concluded Twenty20 International series, is likely to make the line-up.

"It augurs really well,” the skipper added. “KL, when he plays well, is operating at a different level I feel. We have seen him do that in the IPL last year and in patches, over the last season we played as a team.

"He can keep batting like that. It's difficult to find a consistent batsman who can play good cricketing shots and still win you games. It's a rare ability and I think he's got all the shots. He can build on this and get some more innings under his belt. He's made strong case for himself in the World Cup."

Something that Inzamam must also think about.

Kohli is very much the minority. Rohit and Dhoni have made it very clear they care a lot about the IPL. And the franchises themselves have made it clear; no one is being rested unless there's a problem.

Kohli wants to rest people to prove a point, but actually no one in the entire Indian team has backed him up, and the seniors who could speak against have done so.

RCB anyway is never in contention, but MI and CSK will be going full throttle, which means Kedar, Rohit, Bumrah, Rayudu and the Pandyas. I like it, I'd rather they be in match practice and play a bunch of super intense cricket ending in WC Final. After that they can rest as long as they want and skip everything for a couple of months. If we win the WC no one will care.

The problem is bowling 4 overs in a game does not actually burn out any fast bowler. Least of all someone in his condition. It's more symbolic than actually useful to rest such players. If I were you, I'd hope he gets rested and is rusty.

Something that Inzamam must also think about.

Indian think-tank is flat-out wrong here.

Mickey and Pakistan are on the right track with the ultra-deep batting lineups they are favouring.

One big reason for Pakistan's improvement has been the very deep batting lineup compensating for the fact that on average Pakistani batsmen just aren't very good.

I hope you guys stick with the current approach. If we don't win, I would much rather the win stays in the sub-continent.

No. Travelling back and forth, warming up , training, being out in the field, chasing balls, getting hit by the cricket ball, jamming a finger,
That kind of stuff can only happen if he's Involved.
He is quality enough to go and put his feet up and then turn up and bowl well so I would rather he plays
