Virat Kohli believes a flexible batting order will help keep India's opponents guessing while they are in Ireland and England.

India launched their tour with a 78-run thrashing of Ireland in the first Twenty20 international in Dublin on Wednesday.

Kohli, one of the world's leading batsmen, was involved in two surprises - he came in at a relatively lowly number six and was promptly out for a second-ball duck.

But by then India were well on the way to going 1-0 up in a two-match series, with Rohit Sharma (97) and Shikhar Dhawan (74) sharing an opening stand of 160 in 16 overs.

Suresh Raina was then sent in when Ireland eventually ended India's second-highest opening T20 stand.

MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya came in at the fall of the next two wickets before Kohli decided to go in with just three balls remaining.

After they leave Ireland, India have three Twenty20 matches against England before they face them in both one-day international and Test series.

"The middle order is something we can experiment with in T20 games," said Kohli.

"I've got a good mind-set of who's batting where so in the next few games, not just the Ireland ones but also against England, we will look to be flexible and use them as and when the situation requires them," the skipper added.

"We will look to surprise the opposition and we've asked the batsmen to have that flexibility and they have responded very well."

KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik were the surprise omissions from the India team that played its first match in Ireland for 11 years, but they are set to get a chance when the teams return to Malahide for the second Twenty20 on Friday.

"We are using these two games (in Ireland) to play everyone, and I have already told them that the guys who didn't play will get an opportunity in the next game," said Kohli.

The other squad members in line to play on Friday are Washington Sundar, Umesh Yadav and paceman Siddarth Kaul, the new face in the tour party after impressing for Hyderabad in the IPL.

Malahide must have felt like home for India on Wednesday given they were playing in warm temperatures more commonly associated with Delhi rather than Dublin, while over half of the 9 000 crowd were supporting the tourists.

There was a muted reception for Raina when he walked into bat, but uproar when Dhoni was next in.

Kohli too was also cheered to the wicket as he would be back home, although Ireland paceman Peter Chase dismissed both batsmen cheaply on his way to international best figures of four for 35.

James Shannon provided the only Irish resistance with the bat, hitting 60 from 35 balls.

But he was the second of man-of-the-match Kuldeep Yadav's four wickets and, with fellow India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal taking three, Ireland were held to a total of 132 for nine in 20 overs.

This has already been a landmark year for Irish cricket, with the men's side playing their inaugural Test against Pakistan at Malahide in May - a match that ended in a creditable defeat on the last day.

Wednesday's reverse was a far more chastening loss but Ireland T20 captan Gary Wilson, while "obviously disappointed", insisted: "We can look forward to Friday because I do think we had enough positives out there to show that we can play against teams like these.

"We've obviously been beaten by 70-odd runs, a big margin in Twenty20 cricket.

"But if we can negate their spin in Kuldeep and Chahal, that would stand us in good stead."

Kohli is surprising Home fans more than opposition with his joke of team selections.

Exactly, and now this movement of batting order reminds me of the terrible Greg Chappel era.
bilateral T20s are perfect platform for trying new players or experimenting with batting positions.Kohli is doing exactly the same and except world t20s no one takes bilateral ones soo seriously
Fans should worry if kohli and co tinkers top order in ODIs not when they try in t20s thattoo in bilaterals

He has already lost a series in SA due to terrible selection of playing eleven.

Yeah we can all see that.

Fair points,

Yeah overhill Raina ans 3 and Dhoni at 4 are such huge surprises for everyone. Picking Raina, Pander and Dhoni over young olayers for T20 vs Ireland is some flexibility.

Kohli-Shastri-Dhoni trio will gradually take the team to gutter levels with their blatant nepotism.

Team India skipper Virat Kohli said that his team are well prepared to take on the number one ODI side England when their much-anticipated series starts with the first of three Twenty20 internationals on Tuesday. India completed the formality of a 2-0 win in Ireland on Friday with their biggest ever T20 victory, by 143 runs. Although they were two one-sided games, after scoring over 200 in both, the India captain says they were ideal preparation. "We wanted to go into the (England) series with all the guys having a hit and all the bowlers making a contribution so, I'm happy with the batting performances in both innings," said Kohli.

"Everyone is batting so well, but it's a good problem to have. Anyone who has been given a chance has grabbed it with both hands and that's something that's good for any side and our bench strength is shown in these type of games.

"It's a great phase that India cricket is going through and I'm happy to see all these young guys taking their chances."

Siddarth Kaul, who took 21 wickets in the IPL this year, was given his debut on Friday and took a wicket in his second over although once again it was the spin twins Kuldeep Yadav and player of the series Yuzvendra Chahal who ripped through the Ireland line-up, sharing six wickets as Ireland were bowled out in just 12.3 overs for 70.

KL Rahul, who sat out the first match, scored 70 off 36 balls and with Suresh Raina hitting 69 off 45 as India totalled 213-4.

Looking ahead to facing England, Kohli was bullish in that anything England do, India will do better.

"The opposition doesn't matter," he said.

"We focus on our strengths so if they come hard we have the batting power to go hard as well, plus we have two wrist spinners in our attack which will be an added advantage we feel."

"If we play at the best possible intensity, it's going to be an exciting and competitive series and one we're looking forward to. England are a quality side but we have belief in our quality and back the positives when we go on the field.

"The players have accepted their responsibilities and for me as a captain that's really pleasing to see. We can call on anyone at any stage to give their best effort, in fact everyone wants to have a go at the opposition, they want game time, so the credit has to go their players and it takes the load of myself and the management."

Ireland captain Gary Wilson, who top scored with 15, admitted his batsmen rolled over too easily, but they will learn from the games which, to the delight of Cricket Ireland, were played in front of two capacity crowds of almost 10,000.
