With the dust settling on the ODI World Cup, the gaze shifts towards another ICC tournament with the T20I World Cup only six months away. Both teams have only one series each apart from this one to get their preparations on point.

With an ODI having been played here recently, albeit rain-affected, the pitch is likely to be favoring the bowlers more. Unlike the ODI, rain should not affect this game according to the weather forecast. Additionally, the stop-clock trial during the series indicates that the matches could be fast-paced.

When: December 12, 2023, 10:00 PM GMT

Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

Teams:

West Indies

Andre Russell's return will be a big boost to the West Indies squad, and further strengthens the team that won the series 3-2 against India in August. With depth in batting, West Indies will threaten to play the T20 game like only they do on the foundation of plenty of power-hitting options.

England

With Jos Buttler back in the opening slot, England will begin to fine-tune their World Cup preparations with several personnel looking to stake a claim and guarantee their spot in that 15-player squad.

Squads:

West Indies Squad: Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran(w), Rovman Powell(c), Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford, Matthew Forde

England Squad: Jos Buttler(w/c), Philip Salt, Will Jacks, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Tymal Mills, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, John Turner, Rehan Ahmed

Pressure mounting on Buttler and Mott after the ODI defeat. They've only won 2 of their 7 T20s since the T20 World Cup final last year.

WI are batting down to 11 and unlike the ODIs, they have 6 genuine bowling options. The big question is over Hetmyer whose form and fitness has been disgraceful since his return.

Bit hard to watch these T20 series after a lot of proper cricket in ODIs in the last couple of months.

Divergence in white ball skillsets on full display here.

England looking much more comfortable with a one paced T20 tempo which suits the skills of most of their players.

Hope WI clean sweep this bum England team.

It will be a slap on the face of ICC for even daring to make WI play qualifiers for world t20. Put some respect on 2x world CHAMPS.

Instead they will do anything in the rule book to get india another trophy… and even then it’s not enough 😂

Although ENG's innings has gone into reverse, WI have conceded a dozen wides. One area to improve on.

The seamers have mixed their pace nicely, especially Shepherd who really looks more at ease with the old ball whereas he was taking the new ball in the ODIs.

Now Livingstone goes. ENG have lost 5-50.

Good review to cap off an excellent turnaround from WI bowlers. ENG all out for 171 when 200+ was looking a possibility after the PP.

What a disastrous end to the inning by England.

At one time it was looking like they would score more than 200 runs easily.

West Indies is off to a flying start in the chase of 172 runs against England.

They are 47/1 in 4 overs

West Indies is at 100/3 in 10 overs.

loss of any quick wickets could put them in a difficult situation.

Wow, Russell and Powell hit 49 from 21 balls between them to win the game

Russell returns in style as West Indies clinch historic England victory

Star all-rounder Andre Russell made a successful return to international cricket as the West Indies showed they could be a force to be reckoned with at next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup with an impressive four-wicket victory over England in Barbados on Tuesday.

It was Russell's first international match in more than two years and the talented 35-year-old turned it on in style with a three-wicket haul and an unbeaten 29* from 14 balls as the Caribbean side chased down England's decent total of 171 with 11 deliveries remaining.

The run chase was the highest successful one at the picturesque Kensington Oval ground in Barbados, surpassing the previous best of 155/5 by the West Indies also against England in 2014.

Russell was deservedly named Player of the Match for his superb individual heroics and admitted after the game that his return to international cricket had gone exactly to plan.

"For two weeks now since I got the call up I have been dreaming that my first match back I would be Player of the Match," Russell said post-match.

"I didn’t know how it would happen, but I just kept believing that it would happen."

Russell said the knowledge he has from playing previously in Barbados helped him put the clamps on England and pick up a trio of valuable wickets.

"Cutters seem to work well here so I tried to bowl as many cutters and take the pace off, as most of the boundaries hit early in England’s innings were from pace on," Russell noted.

"We pulled it back very well and well bowled to everyone tonight."

The performance will provide the West Indies with plenty of confidence less than six months out from the start of the T20 World Cup that they will co-host with the USA, with a host of their best players appearing in good form against England.

Russell helped turn the momentum the way of the West Indies after Phil Salt (40) and Jos Buttler (39) had given England a good start by putting on 77 for the opening wicket in good time, with Alzarri Joseph (3/54) chipping in with a three-wicket haul of his own as the visitors were dismissed in their final over.

Shai Hope (36) and Kyle Mayers (35) found the middle of the bat with ease in response for the West Indies, before a brief rain delay and some inspired bowling from Rehan Ahmed (3/39) provided England with a glimmer of hope.

But Russell combined with Rovman Powell (31*) to guide the West Indies to the highest successful T20I run chase at the ground and help setup a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The teams meet next in Grenada on Thursday.
