ST JOHN’S, Antigua –Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) selection panel today named the 15-member squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) Series against Sri Lanka. The squad will depart the Caribbean on Saturday and will have a pre-series camp in Colombo before they face the hosts in three ODIs.

Darren Bravo, the experienced left-hander, has been recalled to the squad along with Rovman Powell, the dynamic allrounder and Fabien Allen, the spin bowling allrounder, who has recovered from the leg injury he sustained in India late last year.

Left-handed batsmen Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer have been omitted from the squad which played the recent Colonial Medical Insurance ODI series against Ireland after failing to attain the new minimum standard fitness requirements in recent fitness assessments.

Commenting on the squad and looking ahead to the tour, Roger Harper, CWI’s Lead Selector said: “I look forward to the team building on its recent performances against Afghanistan and India in the subcontinent and against Ireland at home – playing consistent, smart cricket to win the series. Sri Lanka are a very good team in their own conditions. I do not expect it to be easy but our team has shown that it is very capable. These are the series we will have to win in order to move up the rankings.

“Darren Bravo and Rovman Powell owe their recall to their outstanding performance in the Colonial Medical Super50 tournament. Bravo brings good form, a renewed appetite for runs and lots of experience which will benefit the team tremendously. Powell who is back from injury, will add batting firepower to the lineup, increase the team’s bowling options and strengthen the fielding unit.

Harper added: “Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer missed out due to the fact that they came up short in the fitness test. They will be missed, Lewis was the team’s best batsman in the recent Colonial Medical Insurance ODI Series against Ireland where he batted with great composure and proved the bedrock for the team’s Series win. Hetmyer appeared to be getting his act together and was an integral part of the team’s batting group.”

The matches will be played at Sinhalese Sports Club; the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota; and the Pallakele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. The ODIs will be followed by two T20 International in Kandy. The squad for the T20Is will be named at a later date.

Thisara Perera, Dickwella get ODI recall for West Indies series

Thisara Perera and Niroshan Dickwella have returned to Sri Lanka's 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies, starting on Saturday, 22 February.

Perera's last international appearance came when Sri Lanka hosted Bangladesh in an ODI series in July 2019. Dickwella, meanwhile, hasn't played an ODI in nearly a year, having been left out of the World Cup 2019 squad.

However, Dickwella might have to wait till the second match against to make his ODI return, given he is suffering from fever. Kusal Perera will likely take over the wicket-keeping duties should Dickwella not recover in time.

Danushka Gunathilaka, the left-hand opener, was missing from the squad after injuring his back, while Oshada Fernando was also sidelined with a hand injury. Shehan Jayasuriya, the batting all-rounder, was included, however, while Isuru Udana retained his spot after recovering his own back injury.

"Danushka has a back injury and has been ruled out of the West Indies series," Ashantha de Mel, the team manager and chief selector, said. "He is under treatment and may require surgery. Niroshan's case is not all that serious and we have retained him in the ODI squad and hope to play him in the second match onwards."

The three-match ODI series will be followed by two T20Is in Pallekele, the first of which will be played on 4 March.

Full Squad: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Avishka Fernando, Kusal Perera, Shehan Jayasuriya, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lakshan Sandakan, Isuru Udana, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) selection panel today named the 14-member squad for the upcoming T20 International Series against Sri Lanka. Andre Russell, the dynamic all-rounder, has been recalled to the squad along with fast bowler Oshane Thomas.

Russell, 31, is a two-time ICC T20 World Cup winner, having played a crucial role in the triumphs back in 2012 in Sri Lanka and 2016 in India. He has successfully completed the CWI return-to-play assessment programme under the supervision of CWI Medical Team in his native Jamaica. He has so far played 47 T20Is for the West Indies.

Thomas, who turned 23 earlier this week, is selected after making a full recovery from a car accident in Jamaica recently. Additionally, wicket-keeper/batsman Shai Hope has been included alongside left-arm spinner Fabian Allen.

Shimron Hetmyer completed a fitness assessment earlier in the week and successfully reached the minimum required standard for selection.

Commenting on the squad, CWI Lead Selector Roger Harper said: “Shimron Hetmyer missed out on selection for the ODI squad. He has since attained the required fitness level, becoming available for selection and has been included. Andre Russell is back in the squad, having been cleared by the medical panel and successfully completing CWI’s return-to-play protocol. Andre will add potency to every department of the team. Oshane Thomas appears to be focused and raring to go. He will add pace and penetration to the bowling unit.”

Harper added: “Shai Hope provides an opening option and cover as a back-up wicket-keeper also. Fabian Allen returns from the injury he sustained in the series against Afghanistan late last year. He will provide a spin bowling option as well as adding depth to the batting group.”

Looking ahead to the T20I matches, Harper outlined that he will have one eye on the ICC T20 World Cup to be played in Australia later this year. West Indies are the defending champions and the only team to lift the trophy twice.

“I look forward to the team building on its recent performances and winning the T20 series in Sri Lanka. This is another opportunity for the team to build on its strengths and identify areas that need improving while continuing the process of building-up with the aim of peaking for the T20 World Cup in October.”

The two T20Is will be played at the Pallakele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Wednesday, March 4 and Friday, March 6. First ball is 7pm (9:30am Eastern Caribbean Time/8:30am Jamaica Time)
