Following on from the “Pakistan CT17 win was not a fluke” thread, I would like to ask what users believe to be a 5-Sigma performance.

5-Sigma is known as a non-fluke, foreseeable, certainty, 100% predictable event. In other words, the opposite of a fluke which is a 1-Sigma event.

In terms of Pakistan, yes Pakistan can have off days (which team doesn’t?) but looking at say ICC tournaments, Pakistan has an impressive record.

• 1992 – WC Winners
• 1999 – WC Runners Up
• 2007 – World T20 Runners Up
• 2009 – World T20 Winners
• 2017 – Champion Trophy winners.

This roughly equates to Pakistan being in an ICC final on average every 5 years. Is this a fluke?

Pakistan is 1 of 4 teams to win all 3 Major ICC trophies. Is this a fluke?

Of course, this does not include Test/ODI series where Pakistan has superior W/L ratios with selective teams, and of course Pakistan’s impeccable T20 record which is impressive to say the least. Are these results a fluke?

Pakistan players topping Test, ODI, and T20 rankings – Is this a fluke?

Bearing this in mind, which teams have performed with certainty? I would say the closest teams would be West Indies of the 70s/80s, and of course the Australian dream team of the 90s/00s. Does this mean all other teams barring West Indies/Australia have fluked it to victory?

Thoughts please.

I should also add ICC U19 WC performances for context:

• 1998 - Runners Up
• 2004 - Winners
• 2006 - Winners
• 2010 - Runners Up
• 2014 - Runners Up

Out of 11 Finals, Pakistan has been in 5! Almost 50%.

Is this a fluke?

these are not flukes, the delusional fans should think beyonds these flukes.

The final result of what? This is not the question.

What constitutes a 5-Sigma performance? - Is the question.

Would like to hear your thoughts.

You are trying to bring predictability and certainity into sports which is by nature unpredictable itself, that's pretty much the reason why people watch sports, anything can happen.

Pakistan won CT 2017 fair and square, now get over questioning it's credibility. Our team beat West Indies in 1983 World Cup final, it is still one of the most entertaining cricket games of all time and people enjoy reliving it instead of thinking whether the win was fluke or not.

Perhaps you missed the intro of the OP.

I was referring to another thread which claimed that the CT17 win was a fluke. II do not remember your views in that particular thread. This thread is asking what is the opposite of a fluke performance to those who claim the win was a fluke?

So we agree, Pakistan's win was not a fluke.

Credibility has nothing to do with it.

Yes.

Sir you need to understand that wrist slitting is an art form for some folks. Even during our brightest moments there has to be a few attention seeking individuals who look to downplay it or label it as a "fluke" because they love playing the contrarian.

Cricket is a game of longevity so its hard to fluke your way to the top. They're the same people who declare us "minnows" every five minutes as if minnows can win three different ICC trophies and reach #1 in Test rankings. It makes me wonder why they even follow the sport if it causes such grief to them.

Yes we have our many problems but this retrospective ridiculing and downplaying of previous success following a defeat is just as irritating as those folks who brush aside our flaws after a victory.

You generally get what you deserve in sport - our ODI ranking is reflective of where we are in world cricket. We're not good enough to beat the big five on a consistent basis, but we're better than the teams below us. We're making some dumb selection decisions but once we clear the deadwood then things will pick up.

Brother Markhor, many thanks for the insightful response. Wrist splitting. Haha!

Makes sense now! I should have known!
