I have consistently pondered how does one define Progress and I have had different opinions based on my age

Age:

4-8: Better cricket and hockey team.

9-16 : Dreamt of having bridges and local trains and good roads, dreamt to be a youngest PM (lol)

16-22: Inspired by communist ideals and fooled by SFI and leftists into believing society must be burnt from ground up, everything is an issue with Dharmic Religion, so the only progress is the progress made socially not economically.

22-36: Capitalism which gives accountability along with free market is the only true way of making progress, less government the better.

Ultimately the progress for me is the reduction of the number of people you have below the breadline.

Now how you go about achieving that is down to each countries unique culture and traditions. There is no one size fits all solution.

That is unfortunately true, Chinese model could had easily fit India, if we had such a leader..

This is what I have been told by people in NGO who work in India’s most impoverished areas, that it’s the parents/family that creates a chain of poverty, if you break the chain for even one generation the cycle breaks.

Poverty unfortunately seems to also be a mentality, GOI from Congress to today they have tried their best from midday meals to what not but families can be reluctant for change, including change of fortunes.

Economy
Moral values
Women's safety
Education system
Military strength
Diplomatic influence
Corruption level
Effectiveness of judicial system

These are some of the factors which show where a country stands.

the greater the population that find themselves higher up Maslow's hierarchy, technological advancement and some systemic economic importance to a local region, or the world.

@DeadlyVenom id disagree, u can make exceptional cases, but the world most advanced economies, and those with the highest living standards built their wealth off of liberal economics, free markets and protection of private property. empirical data shows small populations and liberal economies make for high living standards, irrespective of cultures, from sweden to singapore.

Walking down the street late at night without the fear of being mugged, assaulted, or worse, that is a rare privilege.

Nearly every nation has the potential to achieve economic success with proper governance and resilience against the influence of more powerful states. Yet, only a select few have managed to establish near complete peace and security.

Debt.

There is no secret to Western standards of living, it is all borrowed from the future.

When you can do right by your citizens and they don’t live in fear and have to worry about simple things like education, healthcare and where to get the next meal from for their families.

Countries which don't have to spend a ton of money on defense and not having territorial issues seem to do pretty well.

Have a sytem to unleash human potential. Only possible with free economy, good law and order and property rights

To me a nations progress is defined by its GDP and excellent per capita. Everyone has enough to live happily.

While there will always be rich and poor in the society, the poor should still be rich enough to get by easily.

All of this can only be achieved when liberal, secular and scientific thoughts are adopted and encouraged.

Japan to me comes closest to the utopia that i have in my mind.

Economic growth, Education, the Health sector, Infrastructure etc are the main points for me. Without significant progress in these areas, No nation can make progress

A nation’s progress in the modern era is dependent on the following factors :-

1. Establishment of a clear & strong national identity.
2. A stable & visionary government with complete backing of the majority of the nation
3. A strong army
4. A strong economy
5. Effective foreign policy

Countries who tick most of the above boxes are doing great and are in the road to further progress in the future.

Countries who tick the least of the above boxes are not only not going to progress for long term but whether or not they will exist in the future is a question mark. A lot of countries today think international borders are a serious matter and they have a birthright to them. They are delusional. The world is changing rapidly and 100s of years or milleniums that lie ahead of humanity will challenge a lot of beliefs, current norms and international borders.

Ultimately the truly powerful and proud nations will stand the test times.

Chart the trajectory of Pakistan from 1947 to today and it should tell you what NOT to do in order to achieve progress.

big countries equal greater spending per head on infrastructure. an ideal world would likely to countries of 5 to 10 million i think.
