What have Lara and Viv said about each other?

Does anyone know if there's anything substantial or even minor on this?

They probably respect each other but aren't exactly great friends. Viv by the end of his career got a lot of criticism for hanging around playing test cricket which prevented Lara from making his debut.

Lara idolized Viv. He dreamt of dominating like Viv, but grew upset when Viv, when captain, kept him on the bench for almost 2 years. A lot of this was due to inter-island insularity; it was felt that Trinidad could never produce a decent batsman.

Both were great players but Lara was selfish and cared little for the team. Laras attitude would have hurt Viv.

Richards was averaging 57 in test cricket at his peak. But he clung on to his place for far too long despite losing his batting touch. In the end, he retired with a batting average just above 50. A steep fall in average by seven runs shows that Richards had become a commoner rather than a king during his last few years of test cricket.

He was never a passenger in the side, though. I remember him batting WI to victory in an English test in 1991 which they looked to be losing, and being carried back to the pavilion on the shoulders of his fans. Bat raised, fist pumping the air.

Viv has never respected the fact that Lara - like Tendulkar- so frequently gave up and conceded defeat.

Richards didn't lose a Test series in the last decade of his career, even though for the final six years he was skippering a team which was getting weaker by the year.

Yes, Viv played a great knock to win the 4th test chasing 170 odd. WI were 3/4 wickets down for 20 I think and he came in and counterattacked like only he could.

This is really helpful.

Thanks so much guys.

I've heard Lara talk about Viv as being one of the greatest but wasn't sure if it was just professional acknowledgement.

I've not listened to many interviews but I've heard Viv gush over Akram and Imran (think he was good friends with IK). And many major cricketers of Viv's generation express sheer awe and admiration.

The same viv who said that he's never seen a better batsman than tendulkar? Or is this some other viv you are talking about :misbah
