The purpose of this thread is not to stir a controversial discussion relating to religious beliefs. So please refrain from the who´s right and wrong debates, otherwise the thread might get removed.

As most of you´d be aware, an amendment was made to some law which invited a huge backlash from political parties from across the country, the media as well as the religious leadership of the country, which yesterday led to being things put as they earlier were in the law.

My question is, what exactly did they change and what consequences was it going to have?

In the unamended Elections Bill 2017, it is important to note that the language to declare the finality of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was more forcefully articulated and left no room for ambiguity. In the amended version that was passed by all houses of the parliament, the wording of form-A, which is submitted at the time of the election by candidates, has been changed and made into a declaration form instead of an affidavit, where candidates were put under oath.

An affidavit and a declaration form have different legal implications and considering the importance of government service jobs and members of the houses, a declaration does not guarantee the same level authenticity that an affidavit under oath does.

They didn't.... some oppurtilunist in the civil service thought it would be good idea to use backdoor tactics and no one will pick up on it and would be used.

The difference is legal implication. If you lie under oath, you goto jail. The change meant you can lie and not be prosecuted.

Sheikh Rasheed was the smart guy to point out this while other in parliament were sleeping...
