A lot of debate on his fitness which is leading people to worry about what formats he can best serve Pakistan in.

All of them.

But I'd rotate him and Hasan Ali in the upcoming UAE Tests, especially with the World Cup on the horizon. He also doesn't need to play every single T20I.

I would like to see him play all three formats but I would be fine if he stopped playing T20 I do however think we need to manage his workload a little bit more. I mean he if we rest him from the Zimbabwe games then I would be fine with that specially since it will give Usman Khan or Junaid Khan a chance or even Shaheen Shah Afridi.

His ranking in various formats,

ODI - 31 rank
Test - 32 rank
T-20 - 12 rank

He should play only T-20 because he doesn't have stamina to maintain full throttle in ODI and test format.

He is fine in all 3 formats IF he can maintain his stamina and fire. That is a big big if. He seems to blow hot and cold. His workload should be managed but shouldn't be given a pick and choose option. Could be rested for upcoming UAE tests, and every now and then in other formats as well. In LOI's, even when he is not swinging and taking wickets, he can be a very good defensive bowler, so I shouldn't look to drop him from LOI's.

The problem is, in LOI's, we have enough bowlers who can come in and deliver like Junaid, Rumman, Usman, Shaheen(potentially). We have so far nothing in Tests. We have the likes of Rahat, Imran and Wahab in the waiting. Don't think Rumman and Usman are cut for Tests. Usman doesn't have the stamina or fitness to last through 5 gruelling days. Shaheen may become a brilliant bowler but he certainly can't be trusted atm. Junaid has performed in the past on the most docile of tracks and looks like he is returning to his best but Inzi doesn't see him as a Test bowler sadly.

Everything except for UAE tests, same for Hassan

Pak should prepare turning tracks in UAE for tests so that we can play 2 spinners

Rest him for useless series and wrap him in cotton wool, then he can play in all forms

He is good enough to be part of all 3 squads but needs to be rested every now and then.

After looking at the calendar, it makes the most sense for him to skip the tour of Zimbabwe completely and the 5 T20Is Pakistan will play before the WC.

3 of those are in SA, but on the same tour there's 3 Tests and 5 ODIs he needs to play if fit.

If he doesn't play a T20 league before the WC, and he's not carrying niggles, hopefully he'll be fine in England next summer.

Pakistan aren't playing too much cricket in the next year.

He's not good enough to be selected in every format unless he improves averaging 31 in tests and 29 in ODIs isn't enough to get a free ride other bowlers can better these averages.

he should play in every format - but Pakistani pace line up is deep enough to have a good rotation..
Hassan, Amir, Usman, Faheem, Afridi, Abbas, then you have guys like Sharmeen Gul, Junaid and Wahab as well

Amir and Hassan should both be used selectively - both of them should absolutely be kept away from the Zimbabwe ODIs and T20s

I don't think Amir is currently up for Test cricket. He himself has expressed the desire to cut down on Tests. I think him concentrating on ODI/T20 will give him longer mileage. Playing Tests could limit his career. I don't think he is the best Test bowler for Pakistan and lots of other bowlers can do what Amir does in Tests for Pakistan.

More than whether he is capable or not play tests, its his body which can't take toll playing non-stop after 5 years. We might criticize management for not giving him rest, but Mickey knows if he is allowed to skip few matches or tours he might sign up for some league elsewhere.

If he just take few months break, not even playing any domestic or any league cricket he will be back in much better shape and with mental fitness. And ideally, he can take break from Zim series, NZ, and AUS, and get himself ready for SA series. Playing amir in Zim and UAE does not give good to us.

Yes his stats aren't great but we all know how good he is at his best so he should definitely play a role in all 3 formats, it's just how he is managed.
