Overall, India have won nine series against Australia in the following years.

1) 1979 ( 2-0 series win)
2) 1996 ( 1-0 series win)
3) 1998 ( 2-1 series win)
4) 2001 ( 2-1 series win)
5) 2008 (2-0 series win)
6) 2010 ( 2-0 series win)
7) 2013 ( 4-0 series win)
8) 2017 (2-1 series win)
9) 2019 (only away series win by a 2-1 margin)

So which among these 9 series is India's greatest series win against Australia? Kindly discuss.

What about 1998? as that was a great Australian side too.

2001 win changed the way Indian cricket was perceived from there on. It was a win which tamed the invincible Australia who were on 16 wins trott.

Indian cricket turnaround happened with that win. Before that win, we were mostly 5th-6th ranked team in the world and treated as a team who is just there to fill the numbers. It was after that win, we became a force and were no more pushovers.

That win to Indian cricket is like

Gilchrist to wicket keeper batsmanship
Lillee to pure fast bowling
Tendulkar to run scoring
Warne to leg spin

Basically, it revolutionized the Indian cricket and inspired the youngsters and coming generation.

I rate away performances more, so for me India's maiden series win Australia in 2018-19 is the greatest.

Although not our fault, McGrath (Averages 18 against us in tests) was missing that series due to injury.

Yeah, Mcgrath was a big miss, but still OZ had a great attack under Mark Taylor. Warne was hammered to the moon by Sachin and India won the series in the first 2 matches. Was a great result for India. Australia only won a dead rubber.

Good series record for India against Aus. 9-12 against Aus is not bad at all.

India has the second most number of series wins against Australia.

List of series wins for teams against Australia

1) England ( 32 series wins)

2) India ( 9 series wins)

3) West Indies ( 8 series wins)

4) Pakistan ( 7 series wins)

5) South Africa ( 6 series wins)

6) New Zealand ( 3 series wins)

7) Sri Lanka ( 2 series wins)

2001 (home), 2003/4 (away) and 2007/8 (away) were exceptional performances by a team that was intent on taking us away from the dark decade of the 1990s and fighting the greatest team of the era to be standstill home and away.

Great record for India. I thought South Africa should have won more series against Australia, given that they have won there last 3 series in Australia.

I know, Tendulkar batted like dream in that series but nothing beats 2001.

SA got wrecked by Australia in their early years alot. Before they won in Australia in 2008, they had not beaten Australia in 38 years, their last series win being in 1970. They only won 2 series against Australia before getting banned. Since 2008, though they have won 4 series against OZ.

2001 series. That ATG Australian team was on a Godly winning streak before they touched down in India.

They were 15-0 before that - and when I say 15-0 - that is 15 consecutive test matches without a single draw.

Then they bulldozed India in Mumbai in 3 days and registered their 16th win.

Then they were well on their way to register their 17th win in Kolkata when they had a 274 run first innings lead. And then Laxman, Dravid, Harbhajan and Tendulkar weaved magic.

Even as I am typing it - it feels unreal how India managed to not only win that test but also win another close one in Chennai and by doing so beating the mighty Aussies 2-1. Incredible.

This series was the quintessential BEFORE and AFTER of the fate of the Indian cricket team.

Which series win will you rate the best win after 2001 one ?

India won the 2001 series despite not having Kumble and Srinath which both were ATG at home conditions.

Our first away series win in Australia in 2018/2019.

There was a time I thought India would never be able to beat Australia in Australia in a test series in my lifetime. So, it was quite an emotional experience to see India do that. Could have been 3-1 to us.

2001 series was one of the best test series in the history of cricket. Simply due to how dominating Aus team was and how they were ahead in the series. Indian still came back to win the series.

2001 easily.

It was the series that established India as the greatest Asian cricket nation and produced the first chapter of the wonderful journey of Team India over the next 20 years and counting.

1983 made India a cricket mad country; 2001 made India a cricket powerhouse.

2001 also kickstarted the gripping India-Australia rivalry.

Could you add a poll? While the preponderant view of many posters here seems to be the 2001 series -nevertheless a poll might spring up other curious results.

As our CRICKETING GOD, The Great Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has declared this series as the best series victory of all time.
No questions for it then, Until 19 Jan 2021, 6 PM AEST, 2001 Series victory vs Australia was our greatest.

With that drive down the ground by Rishabh Pant to Hazelwood, this series has become our biggest win now.

Hopefully it brings more victories, especially overseas in the future.

I agree (not that it matters since the cricketing god has spoken), that this is India’s best series victory of all times, narrowing edging out 2001. Both were won against all odds.

And Rahul Dravid played a major role in both.

% of series win gives a better picture. All teams don't play the same number of series against Aus. Also, Eng is likely to have the most wins 80-100 years back era. It will be nice to see how they have done in % wins in the last 60-70 years.

Is this even a question. This has eclipsed 2001, which I never thought would be.

England's series win percentage against OZ is 40 % , they have won 32 out of 80 series against OZ. Next best is India with a series win percentage of 37 %, they have won 10 out of 27 series against OZ.

The current series takes over 2001.

I suspect % will drop significantly if we see it for the last 60-70 years.

If you take from 1950 (last 70 years), then England have won 14 out of 41 series against OZ, which gives them a series win percentage of 34.1 %

Amazing how the replacements work better for us lol .. this series and that too

2001 will always be special but this is defn close second or on par.
