What's new

What is the perception of India in the mind of an average Pakistani?

From what I've seen and read I dont think there's any difference between Pakistan and India. The poor are on the streets begging, the middle class is slaving away their life in some government job or private sector and the elite are living in a bubble where only the rich are allowed. The overall environment seems pretty similar too like the jam packed roads, bad sewerage, water shortages, very few trees etc

I used to hate the Indians for a good part of my life since that's what we are taught throughout school but I see things differently now. Social Media sites represent the most extreme sides of both countries where people from both countries make their case for the other being a terrorist and bash each other all day on differnent topics. The more educated forums provide a different picture, quora has changed my perception about Indians a lot.

I dont know how true this is but I think the general population of Pakistan is now less extreme and has less hatred towards the Indians.

small hearts and general stinginess :afridi

Same what an average Indian thinks about Pakistan .

I don't get that impression. Last time India toured Pakistan the welcome the Indians received from the public was overwhelmingly generous. Pakistan singers and actors aren't even welcome in India these days, never mind the cricketers.

Same kind of people who have had the same type of corrupt governments and politicians. India has done remarkably in terms of economy but still there are hundreds of millions who are poor and hungry and it would be good if the Indian government works to improve the conditions of those people.

That being said, I thoroughly despise the "Mera Bharat Mahan" and "Superpower India" types who have to defend Mother India no matter what. Also go to any Pakistani news site and you would find hundred of Indians making vile comments. Yeah if you could do away with those then that'll be great.

Pakistani contingent got the second loudest cheer in Delhi, India after the Indian contingent itself in the Commonwealth games that took place a few years ago.

Do NRPs feel different about India?

I don't know about average Pakistani since I dont live in Pakistan. If social media is something to go by then I would say they are pretty similar. But when I think of India I picture rich history, great crciket team, diverse cultures, caste system, poverty, pollution, delusional nationalists, income inequality, nice music and food.

I think when you dont go out of the country you dont really know how the other is like. Meeting some in real life will give you a better prospective of how the race as a whole is like. Hence why I saw the hatered of both countries based on inexperience of seeing each other.

I've been to India and Pakistan many times. The poorer muslim communities behave exactly the same in both countries. Tightly knit but over populated with lack of education for the kids. The poor hindu communities give a lot of importance to education. The middle class is more or less comparable except for the social lives. Indians party way more and the Indian parents will literally go bankrupt to get their kids the best education. Pakistani middle class is more laid back in that aspect even though I see the trend changing. The rich in both countries are similar too. They are heavily influenced by the west and want to flaunt their wealth. Pakistani food tastes better and in general I feel Pakistan has better artists. India has bollywood. If you are an outsider, Pakistan is the place to visit because they will treat a guest very well. Indians are a bit cold in that aspect but are very curious once they know you have Pakistani heritage. Indian economy is on a roll because of the masisve middle class and Pakistani economy is on an upswing. Cricket is big in both countries but the kids these days are into football, basketball a lot.

well average pakistani dont think that every indian sleeping on the streets.
but average indain think that every pakistani is riding on the camel and pakistan is some kind of deserted country.
i have got this info from social media, when the pakistani dramas was aired on Zee Zindagi, indians public were behaving like they have seen some far distance country on thre tv screens. i was kind of a shock that they dont know about their neighbouring country at all. which tells me how media/govt controls the public perception in india.

I can't comment on if or how their media and government controls the narrative, but I've had similar experiences with Indians here in the US. Back in grad school, I once showed some Indian classmates my wedding pictures. They were... shocked. Gaping mouths, wide eyes, confused looks, and some were actually gnashing their teeth. I was quite taken aback by their reaction. I'm not sure what they were expecting Pakistani weddings to be like, and mine was only as lavish as the average upper-middle class wedding, nothing over-the-top.

well when its a total black-out for any pakistani info from last 70+ yrs. thn obviously they dont know about pakistan in general. in average pakistani case, some of us watching thre movies from childhood and all. maybe some people dont watch it now. but we know the india mainly through thre movies. the country , the people, infrastructure and all.

but they had no idea what pakistan is look like, until some pakistani dramas goes on air in india. even in the age of internet and social media if you dont even know your neighbour country thn hatts off to your Govt/media which keeps your brain busy and keep feeding BS 24/7 about pakistan.

We're veering off on a tangent about their perceptions about us rather than our perception of them, but you've got a point, in that so many of them really don't know much about us. I remember their cricketers' tour of Pakistan in 2004, and a lot of the comments from the fans who made the journey were along the lines of, this wasn't what we were expecting etc. There are a few I've met who are actually genuinely curious about Pakistan, and inundate one with questions.

yes, was quite embarrassing that day when Pakistani athletes got cheers. Must be the mohajirs who have settled in and around Delhi or some liberal fascists. As a true son of the soil, I wouldn't be doing that.

cannot agree more..(from Pakistani perspective of course)

I was watching SAARC boxing games in Islamabad (Muhammad Ali was the guest) and when Indian boxers arrived, 90% of spectators started cursing indian boxers (rest 10% were smiling, hopefully cursing in heart)

lol get out of here. I've reached a point where your posts only make me laugh at their stupidity.

As people they are okay but need a good slap on the wrist every now and again. Overtly patriotic people with a false sense of pride who are somewhat obsessed with Pakistan. As most have never visited Pak they live in complete mental darkness of how life is across the border.

Tbh I don't like Pakistan national anthem that much. Indian anthem is much better. It's so calm and sweet.

Yeah they would be the last people doing that.

Its not about Pakistan, people in India have similar perceptions about different states in India,we are 1.3 billion people ,people in Northern states have confusion about South India till they visit the places and see the customs, stereotyping is in the DNA of many South Asians esp Indians and Pakistanis not sure about Bangladeshis.

I've Def noticed one thing in both real life and online is that Indians are way much more patriotic to the point where it's uncomfortable....

I think you are confusing patriotism with airing dirty laundry in the public...We don't do it especially in front of a Pakistani or in a Pakistani forum.;-)

My perception is India has great culture and history but because it's a threat to Pakistan and Kashmir I have little love for it.

I have seen few Aussie and English posters here get very defensive when their respective countries are attacked. I don't think this trait is unique to indians, it's just that we are so many in numbers that we stand out.
