Don’t think I have really watched any American “sitcoms”. The classic American comedy hero can get out of any situation with a barrage of one-liners - think Bugs Bunny and Eddie Murphy. That doesn’t appeal to me.
I never missed Veep, but that was more political comedy. I like a lot of animated shows - Simpsons 1990-97, Family Guy and Bojack Horseman.
I like British humour - the protagonist is not a hero but a loser. It’s easier to relate to as the humour is more internalised and introspective. There was a seventies show called Dad’s Army which is timeless, set in 1940 and powered for ten seasons by the resentment if the main character that he will never have the social ease, grace and competence if his subordinate. That may be my favourite sitcom ever. It’s constantly being repeated. I didn’t like it as a child but as a mature man I just cry with laughter.
More recently Peep Show, a sort of Odd Couple about two hopeless flatmates, and Chewing Gum by the marvellous Michaela Cole.
