Sarfaraz Ahmed speaking after Pakistan lost to England in the second Test at Headingley:

"Winning the toss and opting to bat was the right decision but we didn't bat well so credit goes to England for bowling well in the first 2 hours"

"It's definitely a good batting pitch but they bowled really well in the first two sessions and we couldn't capitalise"

"We didn't have as much discipline as we did at Lord's and batting wasn't up to the mark"

"If you take some good catches, you can stay in the game but dropped catches are a part of the game so we have to do better"

"When we were behind by 180 runs, there was pressure on the batting side and again we couldn't capitalise on the good pitch and they bowled really well"

"We have a very young side and we're going through a learning process, the way we're playing everyday, we're learning. We learnt a lot from this series and insha'Allah we'll do well in future"

"I'm definitely proud of my team for the way we played at Malahide and Lord's"

"We lacked discipline. We hoped to do well after our performance at Lord's. The bowlers also bowled well but we should have done better"

"In the second innings, the batsmen felt the pressure and made mistakes"

"We try to rectify our mistakes. Azhar Ali is one of our main players, he made an important fifty at Lord's. We try to learn from our mistakes all the time including during the matches"

"When we came here, people thought we wouldn't win any game. The way we played at Lord's, everything was perfect but I am disappointed as we had a chance to win the series, but unfortunately we didn't play well but I am proud of my team"

"Abbas is bowling really well, Shadab Khan did very well, Faheem did a good job for us"

"If we won the series 2-0, it would have been good but 1-1 is also a good result"

"I am definitely not content with my batting, I played a few bad shots. I tried to perform well but couldn't do so with the bat in this series"

"The last Test we played was in October against Sri Lanka so we're playing Test cricket after almost 5-6 months. It's difficult because Test cricket is a different type of cricket. You have to adjust yourself for the longer format. It's also difficult specially if you're a Test player, like Abbas who last played a Test in October. We try to prepare well but preparation for a Test match isn't the same as a Test match. You can play practice matches but Tests have different type of pressure. It's also been a long time since we played four-day cricket. It's quite difficult but we are professionals and we have to adjust. This match didn't go well but we did well in the last two matches as a team and as a batting unit"

"The more Tests you play, the more players mature. It's Test cricket itelf that makes players. We have back to back Test series in UAE so hopefully we'll get more series like that which will help players to play long form cricket"

"The catch that Hasan dropped was important, but it's a part of the game. Perhaps the situation would have changed it we took it. Our fielding in this Test series has been very good, there 8 dismissals behind the wicket. As for bowling, there was some inconsistency in Hasan's bowling but he tried hard. He is young and is at a stage where he's learning. He is learning day by day and I hope he will also realise his mistakes. I hope the experience from this Test series will help him in future"

"The number of Test was decided previously but I think however much Test cricket we play outside the country will help the team as it's in a rebuilding process. Playing such series gives the players a chance to learn. The conditions are tough and you can't relax as a batsman, bowler or fielder. The Dukes' ball keeps moving all the time. If a player performs in such conditions, it is very beneficial for his career"

"When we were coming here, we were hopeful of performing well as a team. Some people perhaps thought we'll lose 3-0 including the Ireland Test. As a team, our overall performance is good. I accept we didn't play well in this match and the way we lost was disappointing but we'll try to learn from it"

"Shadab's role here was a play as a fifth bowler and to bowl when we needed a spinner. We batted very well and his bowling was fine too, and his rhythm was really good when he got Bess. If the catch was taken, he could've taken 3-4 wickets. He's getting better day by day, he surpassed expectations and it's a good sign for our upcoming Test series. Yasir Shah will be a part of the team too. As a Test bowler, Shadab still has a bit of work to do"

"I have hope that the players will be retained for the upcoming series. When you come out of difficult conditions, you learn a lot and you can perform better in home conditions"

"Babar Azam was in excellent form and was playing a crucial innings at Lord's, perhaps his presence could have made a difference"

"There are many positives. Mohammad Abbas bowled excellently and we have a bowler who can do well in Tests. We inducted Faheem Ashraf as an all-rounder, we didn't have such a player previously. He batted well against Ireland and at Lord's. His bowling in this match was excellent. Perhaps he was a bit off-colour at Malahide and Lord's but excellent here. Shadab's emergence as an all-rounder was a positive. Fielding was good, often we drop catches in the slips when fast-bowlers are bowling but we did well and hopefully all these things will help us in future"

So, hiding behind the typical young team excuse?!

Friggin clueless. You yourself, Asad and Azhar are not freaking young.

Yeah how about we bring back the Akmals?

Yeah how about we bring back the Akmals?

Dude, you sound so sour whenever any posters bring up Asad or Sarfraz to he dropped...

Do you not see how bad these players have become?

And who is talking about bringing back Akmals??

Fact of matter is, these senior players took no responsibility whatsoever in both these test matches and the same goes for Azhar.

Yeah how about we bring back the Akmals?

As the top performer in the last two PSLs, kamran should definitely be part of the T20 side. Everyone has the same opportunity in PSL and he performed best so excluding him is stupid. Also shameful that none of our other batsmen can outperform him in PSL.

As far as test team goes, just have to hope that some of these guys develop an appetite for scoring big runs and stop doing sajdahs after every 50 as each half century is some miracle. Fine if shadab does it - hes not in the team to score runs necessarily. But when top 6 are doing that it says it all about the confidence and mentality of the batsmen.

Yeah how about we bring back the Akmals?

At this rate - I would rather play Umar Akmal than specialist captain...

Atleast he might score 5-10 more runs than our captain and his keeping will be just as shabby :)

Sarfaraz kept pretty well in this series.

All the youngsters performed. It's the useless seniors including you Mr specialist captian.

I think Azhar and Asad should be the ones teaching the youngsters how to cope with pressure and fight it out. However it was the other way around. What little resistance Imam and Usman showed, it was enough for Asad and Azhar to learn something.

If you are gonna make the "we are a young team" excuse at the very least go all the way and drop one of Azhar or Asad and bring in another new player. That way I would have hope for the future and hope the young players go back to the drawing board and work on their weakness.

With Asad and Azhar I have seen repeated failure in pressure situations and an inability to learn.

In this match and on this tour it were the new players who fought it out! It were the seniors who let us down. In the second innings during the opening partnership between Imam and Azhar, Azhar was the first to go. Between Imam and Asad, Asad was the first to go. Between Usman and Sarfraz, Sarfraz was the first to go.

In the first innings when we were struggling to even get past 100 we couldn't rely on our experienced captain. Instead it were young players like Shadab and Hasan who helped us to not just get over 100 but also 150. It is nothing to brag about but at least it is less humiliating than being bowled for sub 100 score after choosing to bat first.

So these seniors need to stop hiding behind "young team". They never show up to the party when the occasion asks for it.

As a fan we are asked to always support the players and get behind the team. During good and tough times. But are we as fans allowed to have any expectations of the players? We are the ones who are putting our trust in them, taking out our time and cheering them on. What can we do when we see the same pattern over and over again? Just forget and move on? The players have a job because of us not the other way around.

Is the ability to learn from the past failures and work on shortcomings too much to ask for?

Yes we have an historic track record of doing badly in foreign conditions. However are we just gonna let the history dictate our future?Just because historically we struggled against swing I should be okay with it? Just because historically England has been a tough tour for us I should be happy over 1-1? Just because we have never won a game in Leeds in recent time we should all just chill? Then why bother showing up to the game to begin with? When ever the match is at Leeds we should throw in the towel and say we never win here.

No! I demand progress. The failure of the past doesn't justify the failure of the present nor the future. We can't get complacent. We should make some noise and demand change. From PCB's incompetence to provide the young players with a proper domestic structure to senior players inability to learn from their shortcoming and show progress and then in the end have the audacity to hide behind "young team".

We can't sit back and accept it as a norm. I had enough of it and so should you. Trust needs to be earned and they have lost all of it.

I am against making knee-jerk decisions. It should me made clear to Asad, Azhar and Sarfraz the heat is on them and the clock is running against them. Just like it is running against the likes of Malik and Hafeez in the LOIs.

People are just too busy throwing dirt at each other and care more about their personal vendettas than to scrutinize things objectively and demand progress.

When we become complacent and accept mediocrity as the norm then mediocrity is what we will get.

That doesn't even make sense considering his keeping was near spotless in this series.

Youngsters weren't the problem though. It was the so called experienced players who were.

Try another excuse Safi :)

Why doesn’t he ever explain why he is so rubbish?

Why do you bring someone else's favourties into a argument when someone is critizing one of your own?

All the players play for the Pakistan national side and hence are "my own"..... What I meant was he wants to get rid of Azhar, Asad and Sarfaraz. Then who will play in their place? The Akmals?

There are players in domestic cricket who can do better than Asad or Sarfraz .

If we have this attitude we may as well never change under performing players.

When someone gives vague answers like this

"we've taken a lot of positives from this series in very tough conditions. It's been a great learning experience for all of our players"

the journalists should ask "like what, please give a few examples. "

These players just repeat the same vague, feel good remarks with no actual practical implementation.

How come these senior players keep on having "great learning experiences" while we as fans are never able to observe them improve.

Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps I should believe them and give them another chance. Let's see for the 100th time.

thats the only part i search for in his interviews but yet to find in his any recent interview about his clueless club level batting no responsibility whatsoever being captain .

Check updated quotes in OP.

"I am definitely not content with my batting, I played a few bad shots. I tried to perform well but couldn't do so with the bat in this series"

Good of him to admit his own shortcomings. Let's see how long he is going to "try" to perform better and when he will actually do it on a consistent basis.

That is correct. Answers should be objective and not vague. We as fans are entitled to know that.

The initial quotes were vague because they were from the post-match presentation. Sarfaraz can't exactly give a lecture in such a setting, the answers have to be short and concise.

The quotes that were added later are from a press conference which is more conducive to detailed analysis. Sarfaraz talks pretty fast and his pressers are usually around 10 minutes long so he covers quite a lot.

So, hiding behind the typical young team excuse?!

Friggin clueless. You yourself, Asad and Azhar are not freaking young.

If you go by history

We had three inexperienced teams that toured ENG

1981 under IK where we lost 3-1
2010 under Butt where again we lost 3-1 plus all that drama
2018 under Sarfaraz where we drew 1-1

I reckon this team has not done bad

What have the so called experienced teams of Misbah and Inzamam achieved in ENG anyway?

Sarfraz was better than Bairstow in this series who dropped a catch and had more fumbles. He deserves all the criticism for his batting but don't just make things up.

Exactly he took 5 catches this innings

People underrate Sarfaraz and his achievements

The same people will be crying their hearts out when he retires and God forbid is replaced by a Misbah esque captain

I think Pakistani fans sometime expect a public whipping rather than a genuine press conference.
He does make solid points about what a poor playing schedule we have for tests

Sarfraz needs to step it up with the bat. He is batting like a tailender atm.

Sarfaraz's own position in the batting order under fire

Team has done pretty good in this series tbh.. not everyone expected a 2-1 result at the start of england and ireland tour..
definitely need improvement in some areas... but a lot of positives as well..

Sport at this level is 90% mental. When you show up at a match feeling like you have already accomplished your goal there is only ever going to be one result!

The same rubbish player who has a better batting average than most WK batsmen in Asia apart from Sangakkara

Why Asia only? Cricket is a global sport. Anyway, Chandimal is the best Asian WK by far and on current form most people these days would take Mushfiqur over Sarfaraz.

The Imran series was a 1-2 series loss and IIRC one of the Tests Pakistan lost was ridiculously close and there was questionable umpiring involved.

Sarfaraz needs to do something about his batting. He cannot keep playing in the team as the captain alone. If Pakistan have to play 5+5 combination Sarfaraz, Azhar and Asad need to fire, if not they are going to struggle in overseas conditions more often than not.

Yeah how about we bring back the Akmals?

You've already been schooled on this response which is often your only reactionary line when someone rightfully criticizes Sarfraz or Shafiq.

So, won't go into that. :najam

But the fact that we have no wicket keeper youngster in the bench or in domestics is a huge worrying sign.

Sarfraz wouldn't be in the team in any other country with him being so woeful. It's shocking how Sarfraz and Shafiq continue to play without their spot getting challenged.

KARACHI: Ahead of the two-match T20I series against Scotland, Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed has warned his side that they must not make the mistake of underestimating the opposition.

Pakistan — who are the number one ranked T20I side in the world — are looking forward to the Scotland matches, whom they face for the first time in 11 years.

“We need to perform to the best of our ability because no side in T20 cricket can be considered weak,” said Sarfraz. “Scotland have some good players in their side and we are expecting a tough encounter.”
Sarfraz proud of young side despite defeat

Speaking about the team’s performance in Tests, Sarfraz believes that the players should concentrate on playing the longer version of the sport regularly in domestic cricket, if they are to improve in the Test arena.

“It was a golden opportunity to win a Test series against England which is why I’m disappointed [that we were not able to win],” he said. “Our players need to play more four-day cricket in order to develop the temperament for the game’s longest format,”

He added: “Despite the defeat in Leeds, the players have learnt a lot while playing in tough English conditions.”

Sarfraz had come under scrutiny for batting first in Leeds but the Pakistan captain defended his decision.

“It was not solely my decision to bat first in the second Test after winning the toss as the entire team management wanted to adopt that approach,” he said. “Conditions were good for batting but our batsmen were not able to capitalise; even England captain [Joe Root] said that he would have batted first. Credit must also be given to the English bowlers who bowled superbly.”

Sarfraz has been going through a lean patch with the bat but he was keen on getting back amongst the runs soon. He added that the he was proud of the way team performed so far on the tour.

Ajmal believes Pakistan ‘could’ve done better’ in second Test against England

“I will try to learn from my mistakes and improve my performance with the bat,” said the Pakistan captain. “Although I was not able to score many runs but I’m proud of the way the team performed during the Tests especially because some people thought that we won’t be able to win a single match on the tour.”

Pakistan openers were not able score heavily during the series against Ireland and England, but Sarfraz backed Azhar Ali and Imamul Haq to put up a better show in the next series.

“The openers were not able to perform in accordance with the expectations we had from them but I expect them to come good with the bat in the near future,” he said. “Azhar is our best player and he will make a strong comeback in the next series, while Imam is inexperienced and will learn to thrive at this level with time.”

When asked about the low-key performance of middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq, the Pakistan captain was quick to point out that the batsman’s series cannot be termed as a poor one.

“He scored fifties against both Ireland and England especially considering that batting in England is not easy,” he said. “Also one should bear in mind that no player, from each side, could score a century during the entire series.”

So no confidance in his team, always a captain sets the example and leads from the front. never play any sport with a negative mindset.. you won the 1st match becouse Joe root decided to bat.. you got hammered in 2nd becouse you got it wrong buy batting in overcast condtions (my opinion)
