My selection of 5 best test innings in order of merit
1.Brian Lara's 153 n.o v Australia in 1999 at Barbados
2.Kim Hughes 100 n.o v West Indies at Melbourne in 1981-82
3.Graham Gooch's 154 n.o v West Indies at Leeds in 1991
4.Stan Mcabe's 232 at Trent Bridge in 1938
5.Ian Botham's 149 n.o v Australia at Leeds in 1981
Lara at the top because of the genius he displayed on a broken wicket in a run chase .Kim Hughes at 2nd asessing the strength of the attack he faced which was the best of all time, scoring half his team's runs on a bad wicket..Gooch for the mastery he showed in the conditions prevailing when no other batsmen adjusted.Mcabe for defying bodyline pace with skill and courage reaching levels of the sublime.Botham for ressurecting England from the grave after following on to reach the pinnacle of glory.
For sheer exhilaration of strokeplay Botham topped the list who executed strokes on a pitch not true for test cricket in cavalier style. For technical skill I would place Gooch and Hughes's Knocks at the top.For mastery on bad wicket Lara's effort was supreme.
V.V.S Laxama's 281 missed out by just a whisker because he had the support of Rahul Dravid , the attack he faced was not as lethal as those Mcabe,Hughes and Gooch faced and the wicket was not untue liuke what Botham and Lara played on.
