Wasim Waqar were the famous duo but we all know the importance of the third supporting bowler - so which trio was the best?

Hard to look past Wasim-Waqar.

Could put any part-time bowler with them and they still win.

There was a fleeting time when we had a pace quartet of Wasim/Waqar/Shoaib/Sami. Shoaib and Sami around 2001 were at their best while Wasim and Waqar were on the decline but that quartet gave me chills. Now we don't have a single bowler that possesses the guile and pace of Wasim/Waqar/Shoaib. Our fast bowling stock has depleted quite rapidly.

Anyways, I'd pick Wasim/Waqar/Aqib as the option.

Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar were pretty solid though they didn't play a whole lot together... also the former two were on the decline by the time that Akhtar emerged.

Aqib was also a good foil for the 2Ws.

I don't remember Imran and Waqar playing any tests together but at their peak these 3 would make a pretty threatening pace attack.

2Ws and Shoaib at their respective peaks would have been a menacing trio.

Even with all these fast bowlers Pak never won anything meaningful in Australia, SAF or West Indies.

What's the point beyond personal stats?

Having seen all of them i would go with Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Aaqib Javed. Reason is simple. Because all 3 were roughly at their peak form at the same time. When Waqar made debut Imran was in the last stages of his career, It took a while for Waqar to mature. By the way where is that AAG thread lol

In a hypothetical conversation with each bowler at his peak, the answer is pretty obvious. Wasim, Waqar and Imran.

I voted Wasim, Waqar, Aqib because I assumed that was when they were at their peak, but now that I think about it, Waqar was explosive when he burst on the scene, peaked pretty much straight away, Imran was still disciplined and had a good bowling average in his later years, Wasim was erratic but explosive. So I should have gone with Imran, W, W.

Would be interesting if someone could compare their stats when playing together, i.e. Imran, W, W collective stats playing together vs WW, Aqib

Imran the bowler was on the decline during the last couple of years of his intl career when two Ws burst onto the scene. his last two years he was much more a batsman who could bowl.

stats don't lie, in that case. Wasim, Waqar, Akhtar sounded deadly on paper. Although as of right now, they are lagging behind in the poll.

How did you extract that data?

Although on combined stats, maybe WWAqib take it. High economy rates in WWAkhtar

Well there's a high proportion of those matches that are ODIs so that skews it a bit. 40 of the 45 WWShoaib played are ODIs. Though only 13 of the 80 for WWAaqib are Tests....

The SR for WWShoaib though :akhtar :waqar

It is kind of an unfair table, Imran was close to 40 and obviously on decline. If we took Imran's peak and the 2W's peak, then that would be most deadly pair. Even though Shoaib was great and did very well, a peak Wasim and Waqar could do what Shoaib did anyways. so I will go with peak Imran+2W's.

WWShoaib was so exciting to watch. Incidentally, I remember in the 2000's we had the most frustrating period in our recent history of fast bowling. Mid 2000's we had Asif, Akhtar, Gul all bowling well, but they very, very rarely played cricket together due to injury mostly, but also nandrolene. Then end of 2000's obviously we had Amir, Asif, Gul, in-form Junaid yet to debut, but we had only a very brief period with all these players available. :(

Also, please tell me how you got these type of stats. I am in urgent need of a software/website that allows me to pull out this kind of information and other things...

Statsguru filters, simple stuff ;-)

Ah I see. Just their individual stats from the relevant time periods, so potentially some matches included where some of the trio were injured or something. Good enough.

Mainly I am looking for something that can give me detailed stats - batsman vs a particular bowler, time spent at the crease etc.

Probably Wasim, Waqar and Aqib. Mainly because they were all in their peak when they played together. Too many 5 wicket hauls between Wasim and Waqar alone between that period

W W Akhtar > W W IK >>>>>>>>>>> Amir Asif Gul >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a country mile >>> everything else

One that we should have seen during 2000s. Mohd Zahid, Shoib Akhtar and Mohd Asif. Deadliest combination. These three were poised to replace Wasim, Waqar and Aqib but....

Imran, Wasim, Waqar

1989 India tour to Pakistan. A series that we drew.

Wasim, Waqar and Aquib in ODIs.

Imran was beyond his expiry date as a pacer when Wasim and Waqar started to flow and Waqar was past his best when Akhtar was deadly.
