White US professor admits she has pretended to be Black for years

A seasoned activist and professor of African American history at George Washington University has been pretending to be Black for years, despite actually being a white woman from Kansas.

In a case eerily reminiscent to Rachel Dolezal, Jessica A Krug took financial support from cultural institutions such as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for a book she wrote about fugitive resistance to the transatlantic slave trade. But according to a Medium post allegedly written by Krug herself, her career was rooted in a “toxic soil of lies”.

“To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness,” she wrote

Not shocked.

However, I don't see it as being an issue.

A white professor who teaches African, Caribbean and diaspora history pretended to be a Black woman for years, reigniting a debate about the appropriation of race and identity in the United States.

Jessica Krug, who teaches at George Washington University in Washington, DC admitted in a blog post on Medium that for the better part of her adult life, "every move I’ve made, every relationship I’ve formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies".

George Washington University on Thursday said Krug's revelations were now being investigated.

Krug wrote: "To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness.

"I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken."

Krug cited her childhood trauma as a "likely explanation" for her behaviour.

"But mental health issues can never, will never, neither explain nor justify, neither condone nor excuse, that, in spite of knowing and regularly critiquing any and every non-Black person who appropriates from Black people, my false identity was crafted entirely from the fabric of Black lives," Krug said.

"I am not a culture vulture. I am a culture leech ... I am a coward."

Krug's admission led to discussion on social media.

Yarimar Bonilla, a former colleague of Krug's, said there "was always something off with her".

"She always dressed/acted inappropriately - she'd show up to a 10am scholars' seminar dressed for a salsa club etc - but was so over the top strident and 'woker-than-though' that I felt like I was trafficking in respectability politics when I cringed at her minstrel show," Bonilla posted on Twitter.

Leslie Mac, an activist and digital strategist, said Krug's actions showed that "white women continually harm our communities and are rewarded for their efforts".

Krug's history of deception about her identity is similar to the case of Rachel Dolezal - a white woman from Spokane, Washington, who publicly identified herself as Black.

In 2015, when Dolezal was outed, she was president of the Spokane branch of the NAACP, a civil rights organisation, and a a part-time African studies teacher at a local university. She lost both positions after her fabrications were made public.

Dolezal, who said she started identifying as Black around the age of five, was a graduate from Howard University, an historically Black institute, which she sued in 2002 for discrimination against white people and for favouring African American students.

A US academic who said she lied about being black will not teach classes this semester, George Washington University has confirmed.

Jessica Krug, an associate professor whose work focuses on Africa and the African diaspora, admitted in a blog post that she was in fact a white Jewish woman from Kansas City.

The post read: "I have built my life on a violent anti-black lie."

Her colleagues said they were "shocked and appalled" by her admission.

In a Medium post published on Thursday, Ms Krug said she had falsely assumed identities "that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness".

In a statement, George Washington University said Ms Krug would not teach classes and acknowledged "many students, faculty, staff and alumni are hurting." It said it was "reviewing" the case.

Her employment status at the university is unknown. Ms Krug has not commented.

Ms Krug's colleagues at GWU's Department of History released a joint statement calling for her to resign from her post or for the university to remove her tenure.

"She has betrayed the trust of countless current and former students, fellow scholars of Africana Studies, colleagues in our department and throughout the historical discipline, as well as community activists in New York City and beyond," the statement said.

"The discipline of history is concerned with truth telling about the past. With her conduct, Dr. Krug has raised questions about the veracity of her own research and teaching."

A student at GWU who was due to start Ms Krug's class on Latin American history on Monday told the Washington Post: "It just breaks my heart that these students came in, very bright-eyed and eager, to learn about Latin heritage and the history. We all placed a lot of trust in her."

Ms Krug's academic work includes the 2018 book "Fugitive Modernities: Kisama and the Politics of Freedom", focuses on the politics and culture of African and African diaspora societies.

Her case bears strong parallels to race activist Rachel Dolezal, a white woman who claimed to be black. After her parents outed her in 2015, she said she "identified as black".

Ms Krug described her behaviour as "the very epitome of violence, of thievery and appropriation, of the myriad ways in which non-Black people continue to use and abuse Black identities and cultures." She added that she had continued the pretence even in her personal relationships.

She blamed her lies on mental health issues and trauma experienced in her early years, although she said this was not an excuse for her actions.

According to media reports, Ms Krug also used the name Jessica La Bombalera as an activist. In one video posted earlier this year, she berated white New Yorkers for failing to "yield their time for Black and Brown indigenous New Yorkers".

A United States professor who gained international attention after publishing a blog post in which she admitted to lying for years about being a Black person has resigned from the George Washington University, the school said.

Dr Jessica Krug, "has resigned her position, effective immediately. Her classes for this semester will be taught by other faculty members, and students in those courses will receive additional information this week", GWU said on Twitter on Wednesday.

Krug, a history professor known for her writings on various Black-centred topics, gained notoriety after the online platform Medium published a posting in her name saying she was actually a white woman from suburban Kansas City.

Did she wear make up or what. Unbelievable lol

In US, you may be white as a pearl, but if you have one ancestor that is black, then you will be considered black.
The professor has some curls and passed as black.

Wasn't there a simialr case few years back with this lady who was actually heading BLM back then. Her name was Rachael <something>

Some blacks aren't proper blacks. They are mixed. It is sometimes hard to tell whether a person is white or black.

I am not surprised that this lady got away.

Most blacks are Mixed in US. At a minimum they have about 20% Caucasian ancestry.

Below is a picture of former NBA player Mike Bibby and his family. They are all black including the blonde kid. :)))

A white male University of New Hampshire chemistry professor is accused of posing as an immigrant woman of colour on Twitter to make racist and sexist comments and attack users who supported racial justice and other progressive causes.

The university has not named the professor whom it said was being investigated related to the allegations on social media. A spokesperson said that the person “is on leave and not in the classroom”.

“We are deeply troubled by what we’ve learned so far and immediately launched an investigation,” University spokeswoman Erika Mantz said.

The chair of the university’s Chemistry Department, Glen Miller, refused to discuss the case.

But in an email to the department that was shared with The Associated Press by a department source who did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation, Miller acknowledged the professor had set up a fake Twitter account and posted tweets that ranged from “unfortunate to hurtful to deeply offensive”.

Several people who have reviewed the account before it was taken down last week said there were routinely posts with racist, sexist and transphobic comments and images over the past year.

Toby Santamaria, a graduate student studying plant biology at Michigan State who identifies with the gender-neutral term Latinx, was attacked online by followers of the Twitter account.

“I’m disgusted but not really surprised,” Santamaria said.

The person behind the account also detailed how they had fought efforts from their unnamed department to speak out on racial injustice following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. They also routinely brought up their fake background to criticise users who were pushing for greater diversity in science, mathematics, engineering and technology or STEM fields.

“It just wanted to silent dissent,” said Santamaria, recalling how the user would often suggest trans people didn’t exist and that sexism and racism in STEM was not an issue.

“Every time people would criticize the account and say that we do know racism exists in STEM and we do know sexism is a problem, it would say I am a woman of colour so there, it’s not an issue.”

Susanna Harris, who runs a company that supports graduate students and clashed with the person behind the account, agreed the goal of posting as a person of colour was to discredit diversity efforts.

“It gives validity to the thoughts of people, in my opinion, that are pushing this racist narrative that these efforts aren’t needed,” she said.

More troubling, Santamaria and Harris said, was the account user’s habit of attacking mostly women of colour who disagreed with him and encouraging his followers to do the same. Both women came under attack after calling for the account to be ignored or coming to the defence of those who had been attacked.
The account accused Harris of trying to prevent debate because she was white. In the days that followed, the person also blamed Harris for the suicide of a North Carolina professor, who had recently retired after a backlash over comments he made on social media.

“It was scary,” Harris said of the exchange. “Sometimes, the internet crosses into real life. A lot of work I do is through social media and science communication. Defaming my character online affects my ability to do those things but also there is the very real threat that people could find my personal location.”

The case comes at a sensitive time for the university. It has been working for several years to address racism on campus and diversify the student body. Last week, it held a virtual town hall on racism, diversity, equity and inclusion.

For that reason, many familiar with the case argue the university has to take a tough line against the professor. Some have called for him to be removed while others argued he should be put on extended leave and be required to take extensive racial sensitivity training.

Miller, in his email, said that he was “deeply offended” by the professor’s “words and tactics, but I am not giving up on” him. “I wish to give him an opportunity to repair the damage and move forward, difficult as that may be,” he added.
