Batsmen who predominantly played at number 3 should be excluded in my opinion since they are part of the top-order. If not, then what is the distinction between openers and the top-order?

Very good point. No.3 can't be categorised as middle order.

I would have Border and Steve Waugh ahead of Ponting, probably Miandad too.

Inspite of such an outstanding record?Stas wise better than even Lara ,Viv or Sachin in peak era and great strike rate that too at one down.

Among those I saw

Tendulkar
Lara
Kallis
Waugh
Smith
Kohli
ABDV
KP
Inzy
Clarke

Root is also a middle order IMO. He will be somewhere.

I have excluded no.3 as they belong to top order for me. Among no.3 player:

Ponting
Sanga
Dravid( not as great in odis hence)
Amla
Kane (probably)

Kallis
Miandad
Steve Wagh
Clarke
Inzimam
ABDV
W. Richards
KP
Virat Kohli
Muhammad Yousuf
