Lara had it a lot tougher because West Indies batters were not on the class of Australian batters, even though Gayle, Sarwan and Chanderpaul were world class.

My argument for Punter better than Lara is that Lara faced strong bowling of Aus and Pak (only 90s).But bowlers that Punter faced during 2000s from NZ,Ind and Eng were better than 90s incarnation.SL bowling attack also improved during 2000s.Also Lara unlike Punter didn't faced many SA bowlers.

Between 1993-98, he scored 4500 runs at an average of 51 (SR: 83)
Second only to Tendulkar in that phase. They were pretty much equals really.

He slipped after that and never really recovered. The odd great innings here and there but nothing significant.

Ponting more consistent for 12-13 years but never had a monster 5-6 year period like he did in Tests.

In 90s WI were on average better than Ind and Eng.Lara team only had good bowlers like Ambrose and Walsh but lack good batsman.Back than Lara would had less pressure than in Gayle era since bowlers are doing something.

In test Lara had two peaks eras.Fron early 90s and early 2000s.But after 2000 unlike test he didn't had his peak in ODI again.Maybe after 2000 Lara decided to focuse more on test

Like you can see Ponting went on and on while Lara stuttered. Lara had the higher ICC rating (908 vs 829). Averaged 50+ in a calendar year 4 times to Punter 3.

Love Punter but was he ever the best odi batsman in his team? It's a question worth asking.

The 90s were all about Bevan and the 2000s saw the rise of Symonds. Gillly, Haydos, Martyn, Hussey and Clarke were exceptional too.

In 2000s DR Martyn,Hayden and Hussey had better ave than Ponting.If you see players with more than 50 matches in 2000s Ponting is no 5 in batting ave in Aus team.But if 2000s Lara played for Aus he wouldn't be a recognized player since others are scoring more runs than him
