Who is a realistic option to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain in all formats?

I think the calls to replace Sarfraz as a captain are growing louder. Depending on how the South Africa series finishes, the time might be right to bring someone in to replace Sarfraz. You want to give the new captain some time to adjust before the World Cup, and persisting with Safraz when he is not performing wouldn’t be smart. I think Shoaib Malik should take over in the LOIs until the World Cup. I believe he is expected to retire after the World Cup. I don’t know who would make a good choice for the Test matches. Maybe back to Azhar Ali? But someone like Mohammad Rizwan deserves to be playing in all formats, given his young age and performances at the domestic scene. Sarfraz should not be holding his position just because he is the Captain.

In Odi & T20, Sarfraz should stay as leader till world cup atleast...

Test...he can retire after SA tour and concentrate on white ball cricket which he actually is good at.

I agree with you.

But at the same time its important to bring in another WK and groom him.

How are the akmal brothers doing these days? Their keeping is nothing to talk about but when on form, they can take the game away from the opposition.

Lets groom BABAR AZAM as captain in T20s.
Whats the point of being the #1 T20 side? Lets do some experiment for a better future. If it fails, we dont lose anything big

Imad Wasim in limited overs
Shan Masood in tests
Babar Azam isn't ready yet for captaincy imo

How is Rizwan's keeping? Is he an upgrade to Sarfaraz as keeper batsmen?

There are no clear options at this time. However, if Babar Azam continues to perform like this he can become a clear choice after a year or so.

In T20I's he is fine. He isn't going anywhere in ODI's either. In Tests he needs to be replaced but no idea who with. Maybe Babar Azam but not sure how much experience he has.

Fakhar Zaman as he has the necessary "seniority" which our culture fetishises, plus has previous domestic captaincy experience. He is also the only senior who can stake a claim to a place in all three formats.

Junior captains have never worked out in Pakistan cricket.

Why would you want destabilize the team before the World Cup with a new captain? This is not a Playstation game, this is serious business.

This is exactly the excuse I know PCB will trot out. Team wasn't destabilised when Azhar was replaced as captain before CT17 - Azhar himself had a good tournament.

Forget the captaincy - ask yourself whether Sarfraz merits selection as a player in any format right now ?

Azhar was going nowhere with his captaincy. He was getting bashed everywhere, with pretty much the same bunch of players. Sarfraz just about won an ODI series against New Zealand recently, if not for the rain. So it’s not all that bad on the LOI front, although the Asia Cup was an embarrassing loss for us.

No, I’m inclined to think he doesn’t. His performances have been awful to say the least, but rather than throw him away and continue the vicious cycle, we can give him time till the World Cup in the hope that the team responds to him as it did in the CT.

There is no replacement anyway. Who would you give the captaincy to? There are question marks on pretty much every player in the team right now.

Maybe Shan Masood if he miraculously becomes Virat-esque over night.

There’s literally no one who’s smart, performs, and isn’t from a village or a ghetto.

I think talking about appointing a new captain is all fine but realistically it's not possible at this time. Most people are advocating a change in test captaincy but we don't have any test series till second half of 2019. Why would you then talk about changing Sarfaraz now?

Stick to him till World Cup; don't give any hints to media about replacing him till then and see after World Cup if there's a better candidate to replace him. If he fails, replace him in all 3 formats and dump him for good. But till then, talking about a replacement test captain when we don't even have a series doesn't make any sense at all.

Very good shout. What I like about Imad is that he looks like a natural leader with an intelligent cricket brain. Only thing is he needs to work on his fitness.

If Sarfraz has any dignity left in him, he should retire from tests by the end of this series.

The captain should be someone who has an established place in all three formats, or at least tests and ODIs; has several years of cricket left in him; and is seen as a likable, respected figure.

Babar Azam should be our captain eventually, but he's too young right now and has enough on his plate as is. I think Amir would have made a good captain but he's not going to be able to play every match so make him one of the the vice-captains instead, along with Babar.

The only other options seem to be... Imam ul Haq and Haris Sohail.

No one.. no one worth it any way.

Sarfaraz, unfortunately, is our best bet for a wicketkeeper and captain in tests..

We just have to hide him somewhere as a batsman because his batting is worth crap right now!

Malik is not a feasible option. Sarfaraz likely will continue in LOIs until the WC, which should be the swan song for Malik.

England are doing just fine having different captains for tests and ODIs. Why not Azhar Ali? He's the best and most experienced batsman in the team.

Azhar has been tried as captain and he was terrible.

Sure he was terrible in ODIs however Pakistan were then a rubbish ODI team for a long time stretching back to Misbah's time. He should be given a go in tests only, Pakistan have already hit rock bottom and there is nothing more to lose.

In all formats?

This is the problem with Pak cricket, the ability to distinguish between formats!!

One players does well in one format and then gets selected for the other formats, despite not being better in those other formats or he fails in one format and gets dropped in others.

Sarfraz has done an excellent job in T20's and has led the team brilliantly to the no. 1 spot.

In ODI's, he did really well in the CT and won it, so there is a case for him to remain in ODI's is well and it is around 60% in his favour.

I just dont think he is the leadership type.. he had his chance and he looked completely out of place be it whatever format. You could tell he was not comfortable. He is too limited a player as a batsman and added responsibility of captain will surely do him no good.

Now haris sohail looks like he has some knowhow

Exactly.
Not a real fan of Shan Masood but it has to be said that he has the third best list a average in history. I know that he has played only 70 matches but still and he is being selected for the test squad which he averages like 35 (first class). So if he fails to perform he is probs not going to get a chance in the Odis.
That’s the problem with Pakistan cricket. They can’t choose the people that perform in that format instead they choose people that perform in other formats for the wrong format.

I thought he resigned as Vice captain for tests and doesn’t want to be the captain in any format.

Too injury prone to be considered a regular captain, maybe a vice captain for now.

Still best of luck to sarfaraz to come back
For next captaun Shan masood
no idea if he has leadership and whether he can sustain a place in team
He seems to have education and seems level headed and hard working person

Make Amir the captain. Then see him prosper and flourish with that responsibility

Realistically I don’t think there is a replacement as yet, and we should not worry about the replacement right now. SA series is probably the last series before the PSL. Babar Azam is the man we are looking forward to as the next captain.

Babar has been captain at u19 and was a pretty smart captain with a very good knowledge of the game. Instead of appointing a 32 years old vice captain (shafiq) the board should had named babar as the vice captain in all 3 formats actually.

Babar needs to be groomed well, and that is why I think Sarfraz needs to stay captain at least till 6 months after the world cup. This period will be enough to groom babar azam.

PCB never thinks about the future and that is why we never had a young captain in recent times(well shoaib malik).

Babar is the top performer in all 3 formats currently and deserves the treatment Kohli got from the indian board. They backed him in difficult times, and look how he is repaying them!
