Who is better batsmen overall - Hashim Amla or AB de Villiers?

Two of the best batsmen of previous era with very similar statistics. While ABDV is devastating batsmen, Amla set the tone and has better temperament.

Formats aside, who do you think will end as better player between the two taking all things into consideration?

Amla. ATG test batsmen are always better rated than ATG ODI batsman.

Neither are ATGs in their weaker formats (ODIs for Amla, tests for ABD), but can definitely get there depending on how they finish their already fantastic careers. T20s don't matter much but they're pretty equal in that format anyways.

Amla. A consistently world-class batsman in Tests over a long period and also did not do a runner from the purest form of the game when his country needed him.

de Villiers is comfortably a better batsman than Amla. He can do pretty much everything that Amla can and a lot more. However, Amla is a superior Test batsman because he is the best player of lateral movement of this era. That is one aspect of batting where Amla can claim superiority.

AB for me..More charismatic and has got more peer reputation unlike Amla.

Amla is better test player though.

Where would you rank Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers among batsmen across the generation?

With both the batsmen arguably coming to the final years of their career, where would you rank them among the greats of the game?

Even though they have past their prime, they still played most significant innings from South African lineup in the recent series Vs India and will still be their most in-form batsmen going ahead to Aus tour.

Keeping each form of the game into consideration,<B>will they go down as ATGs?</B>

The difference i saw was when ab is set he will most likely take game away from opposition not sure about amla that much.

Two fantastic cricketers.

Amla is slightly better than ABDV in test format while AB is comfortably a better limited over player than Amla. Both two of the best batsmen from their era.

Agree with abd being best in odis but amla is not the best test bat of his generation.

Sanga is a close second but none of the others can challenge Amla given his mastery over all conditions.

Yes, because that is everything. Also why Yousuf was a better test batsman than Amla and ABD.

AB is the best batsman after Sachin/Lara and he is the best of this generation. He is a victim of his own brilliance.SA have totally abused him by making him fill any role they have weakness.

He would had much better odi stats if he was an opener or he would have scored lot more test runs if he was not made to become wicket keeper.
