Anyone who is following the career of Mashrafe Mortaza might have been confused as to what role he plays in Bangla team.

His batting avergae in ODI's is hovering around 14

His bowling avergae is 31 with a econ of 4.8

So is he only a specialist captain ? His winning percentage as a captain is 56% for 60 odd games.

Any insights pls

2nd/3rd seamer in the team. That's his role. And frankly, I think he is a pretty decent captain. Better than Shakib and Mushfiq.

14 and 31 considering what team he plays for is a pretty decent record add to that he has more than 50% win record as a captain of a minnow team, pretty good stuff I would say.

Avg of 31 with Econ of 4.8 will make him a part of half the bowling attacks

Bangladesh play a lot against minnows, so take all their records with a pinch of salt. If my memory serves me right, he averages near 40 against top 8 teams, his economy rate too takes a beating.

He's a good captain and he's lead Bangladesh well. Someone was mentioning on the other thread how Asghar keeps the Afghan players in control, I'd say the same goes for Mashrafe. He also seems to be someone who is very well-respected in the Bangladesh dressing-room and his bowling record if you keep into account the longevity is actually good especially when compared with most Bangladesh fast-bowlers.

Very good analysis. He is, after all, Bangladesh's highest wicket-taker of all time in ODIs.

I think, he was top 10 ranked bowler just about few months back, probably highest ranked Asian pacer at that time. Still he is quite decent with new ball - taking wickets in first spell regularly and he can hit few in later stages, last time he changed the course of the game against WIN in series decider & put a decent partnership with Mushi against SRL. Most importantly, he makes the team on merit and isn’t a burden for the team. Don’t know why this question?

Not really. Bumrah and Hasan were miles ahead most of the time. But yes, he was a pretty good bowler I feel, especially his longevity. Now maybe age is catching up with him. Hard to be a fast bowler in Asia when you're 35.

He was 😁, I am sure about that. Sometimes in 2017, I believe he was 6th or 7th in the table & Hasan/Bumrah wasn’t there. Obviously I am talking about ranking here, not effectively how good each were. But, ranking comes from consistent performance and it does factor whom you are playing against, therefore it’s unfair to level him as specialist captain.

Also, people don’t credit him his due for the contribution to his team. Today, if you look at the stats of AH Kardar or Lala Amarnath, you’ll be questioning if they were specialist captains or not - but those two were the founding stalwarts of two cricket nation, whom you are watching today after 60 - 70 years later. I have hardly seen Mash letting his team down within him capacity.

But hasn't his captaincy of giving Rubel 19th over a few times and unable to defend in slog overs plus losing matches from winning situations gojng against him.

His best ranking ever was 9 in 2009

Crunch Asia Cup game with Afg and he bowls his final over as the 47th. So someone else can get blamed if BD lose?

^ No that's because he isn't a death over bowler and has failed miserably previously but fact that he took the responsibility to come back today around the 40th over and pick up some wickets despite his not-so-good death over past, is pretty commendable.
