This is my list in order of merit of the best batsmen ever in test cricket who for a considerable period batted at 3 down or no5 position. It only asesses performance at no 5 and no other spot.

1.Steve Waugh
2.Mohammad Yousuf
3.Alan Border
4.Clive Lloyd
5.Michael Clarke
6.Andy Flower
7.Viv Richards
8.David Gower
9.Mohammad Azharuddin
10.Inzamam Ul Haq
11.Zaheer Abbas
12+.Shivnaraine Chanderpaul /Graham Thorpe

Steve Waugh at his top because oh his outstanding statistics against the best teams, particularly overseas and great record as a match-winner.He just pips Border because of aggregate and average in that position where he propelled Australia more than nay batsmen ever did for his team.

Still Border was better to bat for your life and a better player of great pace, spin and bad wickets.

Mohammad Yousuf was an epitome of artistry and consistency surpassing Viv Richard's aggregate of 1710 run s,scoring 1788 run sin 2006.He also bore the brunt of a relatively weak batting side so I have ranked him so high.

Clive Lloyd was combat and consistency personified ,often overshadowing Viv Richards after 1980.His batting played a major role in West Indies becoming arguably the best test side of all time.

Michael Clarke at his best was simply classical shaping many famous win.

Andy Flower was simply a run machine

.Viv was not at his best at no 5 but played some great innings like his 208 at Melbourne in 1984-85 .

David Gower was simply elegance personified and at his best close to the best batsmen in the world.

Azharudin took batting artistry to regions of the sublime and at his best could join the Brian Lara's.On their day few batsmen blended domination of bowling exhibiting grace of the divine like Azhar.

Inzamam although did not bat at no 5 for most of his career scored some of his most stunning win sthat turned games at this spot.Statistically he won more games than Lara or Sachin .

Zaheer Abbas on flat tracks was close to Bradman and ahead of even Viv Richards From 1980 played many great knocks, including 5 centuries, including a double hundred at no 5.

Chander Paul appeared unattractive but statistically was a run machine .

Graham Thorpe was a master of great pace bowling.

Must be noted that Border,Gower,Viv and Zaheer did not score the bulk or runs or batted for most of their career at no 5.

Statistical analysis by S.Rajesh in cricinfo.

Through most of his Test career, Waugh batted at No.5 - 142 out of 260 innings came at that position, as did almost 62% of his total runs. His average of 56.28 is the highest among batsmen who scored at least 3000 runs at that position. And his aggregate is the highest too: Shivnarine Chanderpaul is next more than 2300 runs behind him.

Best No.5 batsmen in Tests (Qual: 3000 runs) Batsman Innings Runs Average 100s/ 50s

S Waugh, Chanderpaul, Clarke and de Villiers. All of them qualified for the job.

Wow I was not exoensuch amazing stats from misbah. I expected a average of early 40’s. Was pleasantly supposed be played nearly 70 games and scored 4K runs at an average over 50. And that at 36-40. Amazing numbers

My ranking of best batsmen at 5 in order would be: -

Border
Waugh
ABD
Clarke
Chanderpaul
Flower
Gower
Laxman
Yousuf
Lloyd

Thanks!

Very good list.Gower above Lloyd very debatable. Why Yousuf so low with his amazing performances?well done anyway.

Yes, the last 4-5 are debatable. I have my reasons for Yousuf. He averages 57 at 4 and 53 at 5 and his numbers are a bit inflated at 5 due to his failures in spin and bouncy conditions of Aus/SA/Ind/SL. He also had the luxury of playing on some really flat home pitches and has inflated his stat by minnow bashing as well.

Gower averages 50 at 5 while Lloyd averages 46 only there. So, I picked Gower. Abbas and Azharrudin the next to follow perhaps. Inzamam up there as well but he played more games at 4 and has equally good or even better output there.

Anways, when you consider that likes of AB and Clarke averages over 60 over a huge sample set really put them in top league for that position and hence alongwith Border and Waugh. That is four and Chanderpaul at 5 due to his longevity. Flower was a master as well.

Andy Flower would be an intriguing choice considering the overall strength of Zimbabwe. I wonder what he would have done playing for a stronger team. In my memory, he was decent to good at home and quite average mostly overseas. He was Bradmanisque against Indians stats wise. He averages quite pathetic against england in Eng, AU in AU, and SA in SA.

If I have to pick, I would go with Steve any day for he could swing his arms and had decent bowling skills.

Apologize to readers, missing out on 2 greats at no 5 position.Accidentally I missed out on Colin Cowdrey who had an outstanding record of averaging over 44 considering the bowling attacks of his era.I also missed out on V.V.S.Laxman as I saw his outstanding 50+ average at no 6 and highest score of 281 at one down.At no 5 he averaged around 47 but that was still outstanding. So I admit my error and include him but still below the top as he scored at a higher average at no 6.Laxman scored more fifties and almost as many runs at no 6 averaging around 3 runs more.Batsmen like Azharuddin more impactful at no 5 itself .

My revised list in order of merit below

1.Steve Waugh
2.Mohammad Yousuf
3.Alan Border
4.Clive Lloyd
5.Michael Clarke
6.Andy Flower
7.Viv Richards
8.Colin Cowdrey
9.David Gower
10.Mohammad Azharuddin
11.V.V.S.Laxman
12.Inzamam Ul Haq
13.Zaheer Abbas
14+.Shivnaraine Chanderpaul /Graham Thorpe

My revised list including Cowdrey and V.V.S.

So VVS is not even good enough to be among the top 12 number 5 batsmen in history?

Apologize for error.I only considered VVS Laxmna's average and scores ant no 6 where he averages over 50 and did not consider his aggregate and average at no 5 which also was relatively impressive.Unlike many of the greats he scored many runs at one down and 4 down and averaged 3 run s more at no 6 than no 5.Anyway should make the 12.

You've really shown your cluelessness with this post.

Averaged over 50 at no 6 and 47 at no.5 Also scored 3 more fifties .His 281 was scored at one down.Still admit it was a serious mistake not to place him in the top 12 .Apologize for that.

Absolutely correct.Sorry if excluded. My error sir. To me jut ABD just below Gower considering the era.More flamboyant than anyone but still not the equal in a crisis or on bad wickets as Waugh,Border or even Cowdrey.

He was actually a great batsmen on bad wickets. Just watch his inning in Durban first test 2018 against trio of Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins or his performance in India series in 2015. Even against MJ in 2014 home tour.

At 5, he is arguably better batsmen than anyone who have played the game except older AB and Steve Waugh because they were man for crisis as well. Others though pale in comparison in front of ABD at no. 5 and their numbers aren't great like it is for de Villiers as well.

If I'm not wrong Misbah batted at five for six or seven years. Wonder what his stats are? He was mighty effective in Asia

The question is who's the best no.5 ever in test cricket not who is the biggest bully in UAE.
