We had basically 3 established pacemen and tried a couple.

Wasim Akram
Waqur Younis
Aquid Javed
Mohammed Zahid
Ata Ur Rahmen
Wasim Haider
Mohammad Akram
Kabir Khan?

Akhtar
Razzaq
Mahmood

From the top of the head, that is what I remember.

Spinner wise, we had mushy, saqlain, arshad khan, akram khan-off spinner (played a tournement in Sharjah).

One of the best of the lot (at least potential wise) was Aamer Nazir. Shahid Nazir also started career with a 5for (and wicket in first over of career). The third guy I can recall was a brilliant seemer - Fazle Akbar. Sabbir Ahmed debuted in late 90s as well. Apart from that, one guy I forgot name (Nadeem Akhtar/Khan/Ahmed....) was supposed to be as quick as Waquar, but never got his chance.

Yes, I do believe it was the ego & selfishness if the two stalwarts didn’t hurt PAK pace resources.

I recall Aamir Nazir throwing up on the field due to tension in his debut

I think you are talking about a bowler named Tanvir Mehdi. In the early 90s, he was considered one of the fastest bowler of Pakistan. He once bowled 154.7 Km/h delivery.

Irfan Fazil

Fazl e Akbar

Both these guys were reputed to be genuinely quick at one point in late 1990s.

Naeem Khan
Athar Laeeq

But above all Ata-ur-Rehman.

Naeem Khan was the guy that took wickets in India on a U19 tour, did you ever see him bowl. He was also mentioned in one of the newspapers as a candidate for Yorkshires1st overseas player.

You are thinking of Nadeem Afzal, who played in the mid 90s.

I used to have a soft spot for Kabir Khan especially in ODIs. He could swing the ball in quite effectively. With better conditioning and coaching, he could have upped his pace and been even more effective (he used to bowl around 82-86mph). He was discarded too quickly from ODIs.

Amir Nazir just chk YouTube his debut and see the amount of reverse he is getting Wasim and Waqar were too insecure for bowlers of their stature.

Ironically yes, at Leeds in 1990 with the Pakistan Under-19 team.

He was comparable to Dominic Cork, not all that tall, not as quick as Ata-ur-Rehman but he had a lovely outswinger. I think there was some doubt as to his true age: it was a great attack with Ata-ur-Rehman and Athar Laeeq but the fact that none of the three really improved after 1990 suggests to me that they were actually probably all in their mid-twenties.

I know that there is currently a drive on to dig up former fixing cheats, but Pakistan's major problem then was age cheats.

Aaqib Javed debuted at "16" in 1988-89 when he was probably around 22 or 23.

Waqar Younis debuted in 1989-90 at "18" when he was almost certainly 23 or 24.

Zahid Fazal and Moin Khan were selected by Imran Khan from those 1990 Under-19s on the basis of promise which was completely overblown because he and everyone else thought they were younger than they really were, when the reality was that they actually hadn't got that much development left within them.

And ultimately in 1996 Hasan Raza debuted at "14" …….

Athar was the other guy mentioned for most of the 90s.i never saw him bowl either, did you see some real potential in him

No one could have taken Wasim and Waqar's spots in the 90's. Only someone of the quality of Shoaib displaced Waqar eventually.

The biggest disappointment for me was Muhammad Akram. A beautiful bowling action, tall, good pace and bounce, got a fair amount of chances but didnt know the art to take wickets on a consistent basis.
