What's new

Why do Pakistan and Bangladesh play a low amount of Test cricket?

I saw those teams sporadically in whites, what are the main reasons behind it?

In one line - our team wasn't that good for a Test side, still not, but we can make a fight at home now, so going forward we'll play more Tests.

For PAK, PCB tiers to maximize easy money & some of the PCB officials are more than happy in that. Besides, in 90s PAK played highest no. of ODI, for one particular reason & senior PCB officials were damn happy with that.

Pakistan is not keen on being embarrassed..

I hope the ECB and PCB revise the itinerary next year as Pak are scheduled for 2 tests whilst India 5. They should give Pak 3 and Ind 4. (Ideally Pak should get 4 and Ind 3).

For England after Ashes, Indian tour is money spinner which is why India gets 5 test where as Pakistan gets 2.

For Pakistan, Odis generate more revenue compared to test matches. So not surprised PCB do not schedule as many test matches as fans would like.

Very T20I based 2024 for Pakistan but this is how other nations are doing for Tests

Pak once again low number of Tests.

Limited overs cricket (T20/ODI) = Limited ability players.
It's Pakistan choice to remain a mediocre team and not be among the big boys. Yes, money matters but so does your legacy. Keep losing to top teams like Australia, India and England and keep crying on why we are declining.

That is hilariously low. In terms of interest do we really think more people follow tests in NZ than Pakistan? 🤔 highly doubt it.

I am yet to meet a Pak fan who says I don’t follow tests.
In New Zealand cricket is not the number one sport, same in other Test playing nations. It's only in the sub-continent - India and Pakistan that the majority only follow cricket and no other sports. Pakistani and Indians would even watch celebrity cricket matches 24/7.

So, yes Pakistanis do follow all the formats but give more importance to the results of the shorter formats. We have now lost 2 Tests in a row but you can see low, mild reactions in the media and in the public. Had it been a T20 loss the reaction would have been huge.

Think if we were really good in ONE white-ball format, then maybe we wouldnt care about Tests!

if jimmy plays every test he can reach 200 tests, lol, i know it'll never happen, but its a crazy crazy statistical probability for a fast bowler. i hope he keeps going.

how is west indies reserves gonna play more tests than Pakistan, someone needs to ask the PCB whats going on? even during the previous regimes pak never played enough tests, and we wonder why the team doesnt improve.

Test cricket is not viable for Pakistan.

The financial situation is made worse by the fact that we don't get to boost our coffers with an India series like everyone else does.

It's not that Pakistan doesn't care for tests.

Rather that the game has developed in such a way that we don't have the resources or capacity to play them.

also joe root could play his 150th test before his 34th birthday, good bet on him to be in the top of all time test run scorers by the year end.

In a four year cycle, two years we would be preparing for T20 World Cups and one year for the ODI World Cup. The one year in between we would try to play Tests or most importantly take a break and enjoy.

most of our players also doesnt want to play test cricket, they are more focused on playing white ball cricket

Not true.

Pakistan is not NZ or SL or South Africa. Large 250 million plus captive market and no other sport or even a movie industry like Bollywood to compete against.

Cost of hosting is low for Pak unlike NZ or WI or South Africa.

Test cricket is perfectly viable for Pakistan

Is the cost of hosting Tests significantly lower? How much does DRS cost per Test match in Pakistan? isn't it the same everywhere?

Lack of audience and sponsors is a major factor add to it the quality of test cricket played by Bangladesh and Pakistan is also not box office stuff, however an effort can be made by having a proper series every year, but the cold relations between BCB and PCB are also another factor

Funnelling resources to a loss making exercise is something only the big 3 can afford
Other boards including ours see more worth in prioritising the more lucrative shorter formats

its better for teams like Pakistan and Bangladesh that they play fewer Test matches because playing more with such standrds would only decrease their ratings nothing else

BD and Pakistan can start vising each other every 2 years for 3 tests. It may help both.

Truth be told, Test is not profitable for teams outside of Big 3.

Countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and West Indies can suffer big financial losses if they schedule too many Tests.

Home Tests in Bangladesh rarely attract big crowds. I think it is the same in Pakistan and West Indies also.

Pakistan doesn't play against India. So they are going to be few tests lower than Australia/England. But Bangladesh does play India. It is very hard to get 3 test series unless you beat opponents consistently.

In the last 3 years against big three Australia/india/England here is the breakdown among the rest of the teams

South Africa 11(21)
NZ 10(20)
Pakistan 9(23)
West Indies 7(23)
Srilanka 6(22)
Bangladesh 2(21)
Ireland 1(4)

Against big 3 teams only NZ/SA play 50% of their total matches. Others vastly play lower ranked sides.
