Why do Pakistan keep doing this to themselves?

Fawad Alam got his Test recall in 2020 based upon achievements between 2013 and 2017.

In the immediately preceding domestic season (2019-20) he was actually the 24th best batsman (in a 6 team tournament) until the international players flew off to Australia, when he started scoring runs against the reserve QEA bowlers.

In effect, he got selected as a 34 year old on the basis of what he used to do as a 29 year old.

Abid Ali is the same, but I won't bore people with that story here.

But just consider the case of Imran Butt. He had one flash-in-the-pan good season in 2019-20, again mainly when the international bowlers had gone to Australia. When they were actually playing the outstanding batsman was Sami Aslam.

Imran Butt had one (1) season when he averaged 40 or above. And in the intervening period he had played 8 First Class innings, as follows:

0
3
10
11
27
32
53
92

Innings: 8
Runs: 228
Average 28.50

Why do Pakistan keep doing this? Can they never pick people on the basis of what they are actually CURRENTLY capable of, rather than something they did in the past?

What you're looking for requires a lot of hard work and intellectual rigor. Mainly it requires deep analysis!!!

This is true.

Tabish Khan is another huge example. Dude averaged 31 with the ball this year. So on current form, he did not deserve it.

Because

A) Its all agendas and biases.

B) Management doesn't have a goddamn clue.

You either block players for years when they are performing but reluctantly give them a chance once they're past their prime because of media pressure and lobbies or you throw potential youngsters to the slaughter early on so they won't be a problem anymore. Give the approved and beloved TTFs more chances, rinse and repeat.

Toxic "media" and clueless management are the main reasons. Also I am not buying this Powerpoint Wasim façade either.

Fawad Alam 139* (best score by Shaheen) which is why he was selected for a comeback.... Just saying.. Id advise to properly know the topic before producing criticisms

Funnily enough, in that Shaheens game against New Zealand A Fawad had 1 success and 1 failure. He scored 3 and 139.

Rohail Nazir is 19 years old, and he scored 21 and 100. So he didn't fail in either innings.

I do not understand why you would invest in a 35 year old ahead of a 19 year old. It makes no sense to me.

I would have been ok with Fawad being picked consistently from 2010 to about 2017. But he is now being picked when he literally fails three times as often as he succeeds, and I can't accept that.

He stil performing quite well he literally saved and put Pakistan in a commanding position this test.he also did it in new zealand even thou that was in a loosing case. Doesnt matter if hes 34 if he keeps scoring you cant drop someone.

did you see how Abdullah shafique was invested and what happened to his confidence?

So first it was Butt, then Amir, now his wet dream is Rohail, just hope this kid doesn't have destiny like Junaids other wet dreams, he is good but he needs time and have no place while Rizwan is at his best. MMHS this man and his out of the he box thinking, he really have mastered this art of twisted logics. You have to give it to him this.

People like Junaids and Mamoon are intelligent folks but they have their pre-prepared scripts they repeat regardless of conditions or situations over and over again.

It's to the point where the original point loses all legitimacy.

Pray tell which young dynamo possess Fawad's FC record, especially at NSK, who would've set the world alight.

At least Junaids scripts look for a solution and compare players on actual stats even if he sees everything through the lens of age and height.

Anything to say junaid about fawads performance today?

Sorry Junaids but I don't see many of the youngsters you want in the team doing what Azhar and Fawad did to put us well and truly in control of this test.
