Why is PCB so poor in talent identification and why they keep on ignoring the young talent?

Be it Usman Khan, Abid Ali, Zulfiqar Babar or any other cricketer why he needs to prove himself around the world before getting selected for team Pakistan in his late 20s or early 30s. Why can't PCB identify the talent early.

Why the players like Imran Tahir, Sami Aslam had to switch countries for the appreciation of their talents?

And why is PCB so reluctant to afford early chances to youngsters like Arafat Minhas, Saad Baig, Mohammad Huraira, Mehran Mumtaz and Mohammad Haris?

Why are PCB so obsessed with old horses and why can't they train the young ones to seal the deal for them? 🤔

Thanks to PSL, I see lots of new faces playing or atleast getting selected in the squad now a days.

The biggest problem has always been the lack of vision. Selfish seniors and Captains feel threatened the moment they see a youngsta beauty with potential. Babar was lucky to have Sarfraz. Unfortunately for Saim, Abdullah, Haris and Abrar, they have a dheet kamzarf Babar who only prefers his friends in the playing 11.

Misbah was another dheet admi who captained for 4-5 years and only backed players who would not threaten his place or position.

Pakistan doesn't need new talent

We have rizwan, babar fakhar who will play till 40

Shaheen shadab are undroppable

Chacha iftikhar will play till 60

We just need few bits and pieces here and there

And anyways pakistan don't have young talent

Because PCB doesn't know how to identify talents and even when they do, they have no idea as to how to even build a team.

Pcb needs to view itself as a talent management business. In every product life cycle their are multiple stages

- Introductory stage: Where sales are slow and not much progress is made, in cricket terms this can be viewed as a player debut, Look at gilchrist for example or Dhoni, they didn't exactly kick off in their first few games either.

- Growth stage: This is the second stage where the product starts to grow and whike the product may stumble here and their but if grown properly it'll keep going up and up. In cricket terms this can be viewed as a player rising and improving game by game.

- Peak stage: a player reaches his peak or at the prine of his career.

- decline stage: the product isn't what it once was and is at the end, in cricket terms, aka close to the end of their career.

Pcb doesn't understand this, For the people they don't like such as usman khan, Sami aslam or imran tahir it's

A) Make your debut and automatically hit peak stage or Instantly enter decline stage and be discarded.

But for the people they like and love

It's endless upon endless chances, and it's not even fair merits. Rizwan does whatever he wants and so does babar?

Let's analyse our team.

1) Babar (Solid no 3 accumulator and shpuld be the talent for odi and test as a player and must be persisted with)

Pcb: Let's make him a captain even though he's unqualified and allow him to do whatever he wants such as t20 opening, even though he's not a t20 opener.

2) Rizwan (Gun keeper and good test overseas sena player)

Pcb: let's make hin director of a talent agency, have him open in t20 and bat at no 4 in odi, even though he's clearly limited for those formats.

3) Fakhar (Gun opener in white ball and must be groomed and persisted with)

Pcb: Well he's not working in t20, so let's insta send him to the decline stage, press the panic button, and go all the way to no 4 in t20, oh let's drop him from test as well, that'll really amp his confidence.

4) Naseem Shah (Gun bowler and once in a generational talent, with his line and length and his ability to take wickets oer game, can be groomed with his peak stage being the Glenn mcgrath of Pakistan)

Pcb: Let's play him in every game, no rest until he either dies on the battlefield or gets injured for life, oh and if he does get injured make sure theirs a 90% chance of misdiagnosing his injury as well so he never returns.

^^ I can go on and on but you get the point, They can't even properly identify the strengths and weaknesses of their current pool?

Abid ali would have been the most Gun opener had he been around from 2009 to 2015 for us.

Misbah you arrogant @%@^#^#

Abid Ali's career was annihilated because of this folly.
To be fair mickey is also to blame but unlike misbah I get where he's coming from.

Mickey didn't think a 31 year debutant would kick off and felt that a young imam showed talent.

Mickey's idea was fakhar and imam could compliment each other, which tbf they did for a while until imam got exposed cause fakhar went out of form. Imam needs hand holding to function lol.

Regardless mickey also sidelines abod before he was forced to bring him on.

Misbah just didn't bring him on because well according to some Misbah is a legend

We don't play enough a tours and don't rotate players enough to give youngsters the exposure that they need.

I will name you a list of players already being ruined by Babar and rizwan.

1) Fakhar Zaman (Should be pur all format opener, including what ignorant people claim on rizwan being an amazing t20 bat lol)

2) Saud shakeel (Literally ruining him at no 5)

3) Naseem Shah (Babar is going to kill him, stupid captain doesn't understand how taxing games are for pacers, stupid captain keeps playing the same 11, doesn't understand rotation)

4) Tayyab Tahir (Why was he dropped without Any odi's? Why is he not in kakul camp deapite averaging 42 amd sr of 151 in psl? Why is he not selected deapite outperforming everyone in emerging acc cup including the likes of saim ayub and haris?)

5) Shaheen (Tbf this is more of pcb's fault bit Why did Babar play him in every game? The 2022 wc injury in the final wasn't a suprise, it was a tragedy waiting to happen, just like losing maseem shah in wc 2023 was a tragedy waiting to happen.)

6) Imad Wasim (Good thing he's now Smoking all his haters, LITERALLY)

7) Usman Khan (Yup you heard it here folks, watch usman bat at no 5 and get discarded after 2 games)

8) Saim Ayub (Will move to no 3 or 4 after he fails once or 2x and Babar and ramiz make the excuse on how rizwan and Babar are oxygen for the team at opening)

Oh but don't worry, We have plenty of space of 45 year old chacha, Shadab, And don't forget the upcoming talent the legend of hasebullah.

Tayyab Tahir was so good in ACC emerging tournament and yet he may not play for Pakistan until he is past his prime like Zulfiqar Babar and Abid Ali.

He averaged 42 in psl and 151 sr, why isn't he in the squad over azam Khan? How many wicket keepers does Pakistan want in the squad?

It's the lack of investment. Azam Khan is judged far too quickly by folks here.

But remember it took Jos Buttler at least 4 years in international cricket to become the Jos Buttler we know today.

Took Rohit even longer.

When you have a gigantic , once in a generation talent like Azam, you have to give him 20-25 matches in a secure environment to get the best out of him.

Rohit took 60 odi matches to mature. Azam Khan deserves similar treatment. :inzi

Agreed. You can also do it especially with players like Azam because he's a rare Pakistani player who is actually his official age.

The likes of Irfan Niazi can't be given such a long rope . That guy looked like he was in his late 20's even when he was playing Under 19's as a "16" year old.

Bruh? Azam isn't once in a generational talent

Fakhar was but he's not managed properly.

Mohammad Harris too.

Babar was set to ruin one of Saim or Harris. He will take turns in ruining their careers one way or another

Sahibzada Farhan was always there but had to make a mark everywhere before making it to PCT.

Bruh? Azam isn't once in a generational talent

Fakhar was but he's not managed properly.
You need to see his performances various T20 tournaments. An untalented player cannot showcase such quality performances. He has the potential to dominate the shorter formats if he receives the support guys like Buttler or Rohit got.

Corruption. An obese hack like Azam Khan can keep gettting selected.

What I don't understand how can we not have an active spinner at the moment with over 200 international wickets? :ROFLMAO:

its taken babar azam 9 years and he's still not babar azam
its taken Muhammad rizwan 8 years and he's still not Muhammad rizwan

we cant give players 4 years and wait for them to perform max should be 15-20 games without a drop from playing xi

You can probably add 10 more cricketers who had their careers delayed/destroyed by Rizbar

1. Saifi
2. Hasnain
3. Danish Aziz
4. Azam K
5. Sharjeel
6. Mir Hamza
7. Asad Shafiq
8. Abrar
9. Mohammad Amir
10. Omair Yusuf

Thank God he's running the career of Karachi players.

I wish he was running the career of Karachi players, maybe than we could be a decent cricket team

Unfortunately the only region he is running with is KP and that is the primary reason why have fallen down so hard
This isn’t even about regionalism

I think it’s a wrong perception KPK is producing the best talent. They are producing good athletes…that’s about it.

Karachi players are not good enough to be selected the one mentioned in your post are either fixers, players with no potential, ttfs and sumo wrestlers.

Imagine Karachi being so bad that they have Azam Khan as one of their main representative lol who average 4 in international cricket and mocked by everyone because of his weight.

It's funny you talk about KPK when mir hamza speaks Pashto, abrar,

Younis Khan is a great example of someone from KPK who moved to Karachi very early in his life to have access to the best coaches and facilities. Had he stayed in KPK, I doubt he would've been the same player. The truth hurts @PakEngFan

Are there young talents in Pakistan though?

To be fair, Pakistan tries young talents way more than other countries. If you are 19-20, forget about playing for India unless you play out of your skin for a consecutive period of time.

Like @topspin mentioned, those KP/Pashtun players from Karachi i.e: Younis Khan owe it to Karachi for their success not the other way around

Why would it hurt? Again an assumption. There is no denying Karachi still has far better coaches and facilities than KPK. I support Pakistan team not a region maybe lecture your mate as he bring his region into everything. Take your best 11 from Pakistan whether they be from Sindh, Punjab KPK or Balochistan. Why don't you question this poster as his team is usually filled with 11 players from Karachi?

I just stated a fact about Azam Khan he's fat unfit and a rubbish cricketer and currently he's one the main players from Karachi. I would be embarrassed if these are the sort of players are being advocated. I don't blame you for not answering. I have already spoken about younis Khan.

Yes but once in a generational talent is going s bit too far

Both of them want to win cups. What's your end goal?

Mir Hamza, omair, abrar 100%.

Tbh to shafiq I don't think he was ruined in the babar era, Misbah gave him plenty of chances and shafiq was just another shan masood in Whiteball but he was good in test

It's better to add fawad alam instead. He was great at odi in 2014 but was dropped by misbah for YK even though YK was coming as an opener or no 3 and fawad was a specialist no 4/5.

Fawad was the highest run scorer for us in 2014 excluding shehzad but shehzad had a lower avg and sr and played like 10 more games that's why.

Fawad averaged over 60 in 2014.

Like I said my friend, their are too many names to list

Fawad, khurram manzoor, Khalid Latif etc etc

Bro what is a pakistani fan according to you?

And no before you come up with such and such, that I'm an aussie supporter and am backtracking, no in my case currently I don't support the babar team.

Terms like generational talent are overused. But Azam Khan needs to be backed. He has a T20 career strike rate close to 150. Don't think any Pak player has been able to achieve that.
Generational talent is fakhar but because he's in Pakistan he won't ever reach that potential.

Fakhar is a generational talent because he's the first opener since saeed Anwar who can play such monster innings, he's so good at his best that Mr no 1 himself admitted that the team is nothing without fakhar performing.

Problem is we are in a system where rather then figuring out why fakhar is inconsistent and plays like a tail ender at times,

We shove him away from test and act like rizwan is somehow a superior t20 opener to him.

When you have a player who can hit 200, 180, 193 etc, you don't shove him aside because he isn't performing in other formats, you figure out how to translate that into other formats, not shove him at no 4 😭😭.

Bro Buttler and Rohit have more talent in their pinky toes than Azam Khan.

By Azam Khan’s age Buttler was averaging nearly 40 at a 120 SR in ODI and had 4 100’s 12 50’s and had played an ODI WC where he averaged 35 @ 135 SR. In T20 internationals he was averaging 28 @ 140 SR.

Very good point.

Of course the mountain regions will produce warrior mentality athletes, not necessarily enhance them in mental and tactical astuteness

Why thank God for this? Why are you so against Karachi players?
I am not against Karachi players I am against this poster bringing them in Evey post. This guy wants danish Aziz asaad Shafiq etc in the team and you agree with that.

Which Karachi players do you actually like? Don’t say Saim Ayub because we know you have no choice but to like him.

Any player with potential, that would be omair bin yousuf, ammad alam, Khawaja nafay. Now can you answer that so you agree with the poster when he wants asad Shafiq, danish Aziz etc in the team since you like his teams?

You’ve got me cornered bro! I tap out

Nepotism, lack of a transparent system, and inconsistent selection processes are issues.
This is it in a nutshell. And then we have groupisms with captains and coaches picking their friends over merit. Its very frustrating as I believe we have the resource pool to pick the best to compete with the big guns.

There is a big disparity in finances between us and the top three which has led to them pulling away. But if we don't address these issues then the gulf in quality is going to remain.

Unfortunately, I don't see things changing anytime soon, the cricket team and board are just a reflection of the Pak society and its institutions where corruption is rife.

Could anybody tell where is Yasir Jan now. The maverick who could bowl from both hands but couldn't even make a debut.

I don't claim that he is as talented as them or might achieve as much success as they have. Since he hasn't played much in the first-class cricket, it would be a hindrance for him. Nonetheless, in the T20Is, he can become effective if he is backed well.

His strike rate in T20s is around 150, which is quite remarkable. We must not discard him on the basis of a few failures. Pakistan's nos. 5 and 6 have a better strike rate than only that of Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Azam Khan can provide a solution to that problem.

Despite all its flaws, I feel like our cricket is one of the few institutions in this country where people come through based on merit and where everyone (regardless of background) can make it to the top based on their hardwork and talent.

You pointed out a few names, that according to you, didn't play for Pakistan. What about someone like Babar, who went from being a ball-boy to becoming arguably the greatest batter this country has produced in decades? What about Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi who got identified at very young ages and put into the system, from where they gradually rose up the ranks in junior cricket to the national team. What about Fakhar Zaman who came into the team after dominating in List A cricket? On top of that, the PSL has allowed even more obscure but talented players to be identified...just look at Zaman Khan, who comes from a dirt poor background.

I understand the sentiment, our system requires alot of changes. There will always be your Fawad Alams and Azam Khans. But I think its unfair to say that we are that bad at identifying talent. And of the names you mentioned, I am sure that there are many who would argue and say that those players were not good enough to play for Pakistan.

I'm not sure what Imran Tahir's numbers in domestic were during the 2000s but I highly doubt he was lighting the domestic circuit on fire or that he was doing better than Kaneria back then. Also, he moved to South Africa because he fell in love with a woman. As for Abid Ali, he didn't start scoring well in FC cricket until he was well into his 30s. And when he started doing well, he was selected not long after. Sami Aslam had some talent but all in all, he was a rubbish and mentally weak player who didn't have the guts to tough it out in domestic cricket.

The problem in my opinion is not so much identifying talent as it is grooming them and turning them into complete players. That's where Australia, India, England are light years ahead of us. Unless you get a Babar or a Shaheen or Naseem Shah, where the player is just that talented, gifted and motivated to work hard, you will mostly get players who will have glaring flaws in their game. Whether its technical issues or something as simple as fielding.

I don't claim that he is as talented as them or might achieve as much success as they have. Since he hasn't played much in the first-class cricket, it would be a hindrance for him. Nonetheless, in the T20Is, he can become effective if he is backed well.

Look I hope you’re right. We need a consistent and powerful lower order hitter, so if he fulfills that role I would be very happy.

He’s only played 8 international games, but this far it does not seem that he’s able to do in international cricket what he does in league cricket.

They so called talent when given their chance to perform never deliver.
