ST JOHN’S, Antigua– Effectively immediately, the WICB today announced it has separated from the Head Coach Phil Simmons. In a meeting of the Board of Directors, on Saturday, September 10, this decision was taken.

In recent times, based on the public pronouncements of the coach and the approach internally, we have identified differences in culture and strategic approach. The WICB would therefore like to thank the coach for his contribution and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

The Senior Team is preparing for its upcoming assignments against Pakistan in the UAE. The Team will be headed by Manager Joel Garner, coaches Henderson Springer and Roddy Estwick.

Astonishing from WICB. Just before the team is to fly out to UAE, they decide to sack a coach who's been in the job for only a year.

The incompetence of the WICB never ceases to amaze because who on earth would want to take the West Indies job now after witnessing the treatment of Simmons and how he was obstructed at every turn with selection policy which is at the heart of this dispute between Simmons and WICB.

Even worse than the PCB.

To have demolished the legacy of the 80s team was a herculean task but they accomplished it easily.

Bad for us

The players maybe inspired to perform now and new coaching staff may have positive effect

Just terrible and then posters here blame the players when they select T20 leagues over the team set up by this board! Imagine how insecure most players probably feel under this atrociously poor board.

So after the publicity stunt in Fort Lauderdale the first so call plan to move West Indies Cricket forward is to Fire the Coach just 2days before a tour.. just prove to me what I already knew. If the blind leads the blind they are bound to fall in a pit.. Smf

WICB are doing every thing they can to run WI cricket into the ground. Not sure how things are going to get any better over there without some serious intervention.

WICB has to be one of the most incompetent boards along with the PCB and ZC. No wonder the players try to have no business with the board.

^ great insult to ZC and PCB to be compared with WICB.

SLC
BCB
BCCI
CA
ECB
NZC

only competent boards remaining. PCB misses out due to drama and corruption

He talked against the board quite a few times during his tenure. I was actually expecting it (not that I support it).

SLC is far more worse than the PCB.

But from an outsider's perspective they have been doing a rather same job for now and there really isn't too many selection dillemas. I have heard a few complaints from SL fans regarding their board, I guess it boils down to lack of reports regarding the activities of the SL board.

WICB has the ability to even make the PCB look like geniuses.

Utter incompetence. A totally corrupt board living off handouts from ICC and other boards. And people want to give more money to save tests in the WI. It will be throwing good money down the drain. WICB does not seem to be capable of saving anything let alone test cricket which is a herculean task.

Well said. It is extremely sad as WI have a proud history and have produced some of the highest quality players ever seen on the cricket field. As already stated by many posters whose knowledge I greatly respect here on this thread. If the individuals at the top of any industry are corrupt then injustice will move down through the power structure. A great shame as WI teams have shown that there is plenty of talent still in WI with recent success but nothing will move forward and improve until the leadership and board are dealt with. The similarities with the PCB are concerningly very similar.

Are we talking about the same ZC where millions of dollars in funding disappears into the pockets of Mugabe cronies?

Joel Garner - now that's a name we havent heard for a while. If Irfan is selected for the series, he could well be standing next to Garner - what a photo op!

St John's: Former West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose has questioned West Indies Cricket Board's (WICB) decision to dismiss Phil Simmons as head coach on the eve of the team's series against Pakistan.

Ambrose, who was fired as bowling consultant under the advice of Simmons in May this year, has criticised the timing as poor, reports CMC.

Simmons, a former West Indies all-rounder, was fired hours before the players boarded a flight for the United Arab Emirates to play Pakistan in three T20s, three ODIs and three Tests.

"The timing is wrong, to be quite blunt," declared Ambrose on Saturday. Simmons' sacking has triggered angry responses from an increasing number of cricketers including Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy.

"If you weren't happy with the things he said, why pull a coach off a tour two or three days before?" said Ambrose.

The WICB has said its decision to sack Simmons was based on public pronouncements of the coach as well as differences in culture and strategic approach.

If there is one board in world cricket that is worse than the PCB, it is WICB.

Kingston: West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Dave Cameron has defended the timing of his decision to sack head coach Phil Simmons, saying he expects the "bold" move to be vindicated in the future.

Simmons was controversially fired last month on the same day the West Indies squad left the Caribbean for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to take on Pakistan in a Twenty20, One-Day International and Test series, reports CMC .

But with the board having come under heavy criticism from several quarters over the decision "especially in light of the wretched results on the current tour" a defiant Cameron argued there would never have been an ideal time to remove Simmons.

"There will always be criticism, for example, the one about the coach - the timing (of the decision)," Cameron told Line and Length Network.

"I think there's never a good time to make a decision like that. If we waited three months, it would have been three months later to make a decision and really would not have been the right thing to do."

Trinidadian Simmons, who spent a turbulent 18 months in the post, was terminated over what the board labelled as "differences in culture and strategic approach."

Subsequently, the Pakistan tour has proven shambolic for the West Indies, as they suffered whitewashes in the three-match T20 and One-Day International series, and currently trail 0-1 in the three-Test series.

They were uncharacteristically out of sorts in the T20s - their strongest format - looking anything but the reigning World champions with lacklustre performances in all departments.

Seasoned all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, who were members of the limited overs squad, recently blamed the sudden firing of Simmons for the string of poor results, telling media on their return to the Caribbean that the decision had demoralised the squad.

However, Cameron, who in the past has come under fire for his handling of players issues, said leadership was about making bold decisions.

"It's what management, leadership is about and I think years later once all of this has died down and people have seen what we've actually put in place in the last two years, this will all go away and people will realise we had to take some very bold decisions at this point in time," Cameron contended.

During Simmons' time in charge, he managed to pull off a rare Test win against England and force a 1-1 draw in the series in the Caribbean last year, and also oversaw the West Indies' capture of an unprecedented second T20 World Cup title in India last April.

He had, however, previously fallen out with the board after he charged last year September that there had been "outside interference" in the selection of the West Indies one-day squad to tour Sri Lanka.

He was subsequently suspended for the tour and only reinstated for the series away to Australia, after tendering a public apology.

Appointments of CEO and HEAD COACH to be ratified

St John’s, ANTIGUA – The ratification of the appointments of the new Chief Executive Officer and Head Coach; the full review of the commercial strategy and the 2017 schedule are among the major topics up for discussion at the Board of Directors meeting of the West Indies Cricket Board.

The meeting scheduled for December 10 and 11 will also continue the discussions about the release fees for West Indies players who ply their trade in Twenty20 leagues across the world. Full reports from all committees will be tabled.

The assessment of the Men’s, A and Women’s teams’ performances over the last three months will also be on the agenda; while looking ahead to the third year of the 4-Day Professional Cricket League (PCL) and the 2017 edition of the Super50 will be a focus.

President, Dave Cameron is pleased that “our Women’s team has qualified for the ICC Women’s World Cup scheduled for June – July 2017; we also welcome the 20 players who are starting camp for the Under 19 squad this weekend in Grenada as they prepare to defend the championship in 2018.”

The two-day meeting which is the final for this year will be held in the Leeward Island of St Maarten.

Given Jimmy Adams has left his position at Kent after five seasons in charge, I assume he'd be the next coach of the West Indies.

The following is a statement from Cricket West Indies (CWI) regarding the article – CWI admits liability in Phil Simmons’ dismissal affair

ST JOHN’s, Antigua – CWI never denied liability in the Phil Simmons’ dismissal affair for no other reason than to ensure an amicable resolution in the interest of West Indies Cricket. The negotiations with the former coach, Phil Simmons and his representatives are ongoing. While we have a hearing date for March 26, 2019, we are hoping to reach a settlement soon.

Their loss to lose someone like Phil.

Done a great job for Afghanistan and am sure is much happier with them.
