It wasn't down to luck. It was Rahane's amazing captaincy who was standing in for an injured Kohli. India had a slender lead of 30 which was easily chipped away by Smith who had come out with a very aggressive mindset and almost 500 runs under his belt in that series until that point. The entire series hinged on Smith's innings.. another 100 from him and the Border-Gavaskar trophy was lost. It was Rahane, who inspite of Smith getting boundary upon boundary, decided to keep attacking, kept the slips in and asked the bowlers to keep nudging Smith to attack.. which immediately led to Smith playing a false shot chopping on to his stumps looking to attack a short ball. It was the series deciding moment and the best bit of captaincy from an Indian captain in the entire series.
I'm telling you, India is doing Rahane a great disservice by not having him captain in favour of a volatile loudmouth who presided over a 300 run loss at the Pune rank turner and has 0 tactical sense whereas Rahane delivered the cup in the greenest pitch of the series. It's amazing how much superstar culture trumps merit in this country tbh. I would have straight away made Rahane the Test match after that test no questions asked. The difference between his and Kohli's captaincy was clear as day.
