Will Pakistan have a deep batting line up, in the coming years?

The cricket is changed, especially ODI's. In other words, it has become a longer version of T20's.

So you do need a deep batting line up, where even your number 10 can get 20 odd runs, if required. Especially at a strike rate over 150.

Pakistan has had the cushion of Wasim, Razzaq, Mahmood and Afridi for years.

But, off late, they have been struggling with the depth in the batting line up.

For instance, if you look 2 years back at WC 15, this was your 7-11

7.Afridi
8.Wahab
9.Sohail
10.Rahat/ Yasir
11.Irfan

But if you look at the way it's shaping up,

7.Imad
8.Shadab
9.Fahim
10.Amir
11.Hassan

This is some depth, with hassan coming at 11.

The next big tournament is WC'19, in England. Would Pakistan be successful in having a deep batting line up?

Yea. We are improving.

I kid you not, this was our tail in CT 2013: 8. Wahab, 9. Ajmal, 10. Junaid, 11. Irfan.

Now our tail is better. Because the only way is up. The opening problem will be solved soon, and Pakistan will be unstoppable.

Lol Fahim and Hassan became batting all rounders after just one practice match against BD ? ummm okay then

Fahim is a very good bat...
Hassan is better than 11 from what ive seen...that straight 6 was a beauty.
By the way, the potential is there...but then again we also have wahab who bats like a tailender even if u ask him to open.

Big lol at you. Can i know Where did i say Hasan and Fahim are all rounders, let alone batting all rounders?

I said everyone must be able to bat a bit/ hit, not genuine tail Enders like Rahat irfan and Yasir.

Kindly improve ur comprehension skills, if not don't comment just for the sake of it

yes our bowlers are decent batsmen. Irfan, Rahat Ali etc were all hopeless batsmen

we are literally just sharjeel away from being a competitive team.

also means that the top order dead wood needs to be let go. just hoping that sharjeel hasn't really done something very stupid and gets back to play cricket.

Fahim as always been an AR. Hasan can be a good #8, has a FC 50 and I also remember him scoring 48 against England A last year, plus we saw what he did in the WI test and today so he can definitely be decent, not an AR though.

You need to keep working with the skills. In a year or so it will be pretty good lower order.

Yes. It is shaping up well. We should add someone like Yamin/Talat/Ali Khan at no 6/7 (Move Imad or Shadab at 6) after Malik's retirement.

Sorry I didnt see your thread. I made a similar thread for CT.

Arthur did say he was trying to shape a modern brand of attacking ODI cricket for Pakistan and I'm seeing vast amounts of improvement. Only major drawback is Sharjeel's spot fixing allegations otherwise the opening conundrum would've been finished long time ago. Not saying the tail is world class but each batsman in the tail is good enough to score 10+ runs or just "double digit" scores which is so useful.

#8 to #11 do not have to be 50 scoring all-rounders. As long as everyone can chip in 15-20 runs, you get around 50-60 runs easily from the tail which can be massive difference between winning and losing a game.

Yea a good tail BUT a weak top order.. So our batting lineup is not great by any means. We need to bring Sharjeel in and also Salman Butt..

Need to get Aamir Yamin in as well, then it will literally be like having Mahmood, Razzaq down the order.

Much improved from past years. Had we had Sharjeel in this team it would've been much more well balanced.

We should do. Ashraf and Hasan can obviously bat and Amir is no mug either. They need to be consistent though.

Batting depth wasn't that bad in recent past - there are few examples like Wahab, Ajmal, JK & Irfan at 8, 9, 10 & Jack; but as long as players like Wahab, Amir, Gul are slotted at 10 or even 9, tail can't be said that poor.

PROBLEM is the lack of intent from top order to give any chance to the tail - particularly during Misbah's time. Even now, with this depth, PAK top order is playing too slow, which will result into an impossible proposition for any batsman coming after 5/6. Historically, I have seen that almost 90% of the matches are lost if a team is to manage an asking of 150%+ of initial asking or around twice of current rate for more than 15 overs, no matter who many wickets are at hand.

By numbers, if I put a scenario of chasing 260, that's an starting asking of 5.20. After 35 overs, if the score is 140 (that's an asking of 8.00, twice of current rate of 4.00, and around 154% of initial asking of 5.20) - even with 10 wickets at hand, chasing success won't be more than 15% - no matter who is batting at 8 to 11. Now the game has gone to higher score like 325, and the game context has changed a bit (significant one is 2 balls), still no matter how good the tail is - it can only come into equation, if top order leaves enough time for them to be counted.

Bottom line is - this depth can only come into effect, if they are given a realistic proposition; otherwise PAK'll end 15 short & 3 wickets at hand. This Azhar, Shehzad, Babar, MoHa, Sarfu with their customary approach at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 won't help a tail like say Malik, Razzak, Mahmood, Moin, Akram, Saqlin & Amir at 6-11.
