Would any top team allow such a batsman in their line-up?

How is he still the captain when Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler are around and have come into their own in the last year or so?

He's always underperformed in domestic cricket. Still averages 47.62 @ 98.44 in ODIs this year.

why not
when aus can select cartwright
pak can select hafeez
ind can select manish
nzl can select ross taylor
s.a can select jp duminy
anything is possible

Morgan has always been a player who has a good spell then a really poor spell.

he was scoring odi centuries for fun not long ago. he will bounce back soon.

cpl performances are not relevant. if they were babar azam's place in the t20 side would have been under threat.

Gun player he is but hadn't done justice to his talent yet

I have seen some of his fine knocks recently so no need to drop in near future atleast

Buttler is the only player who's under performing recently in that mighty eng lineup i guess

Drop him already. Give his spot in the order and the armband to the Beard to be Feared, Moeen Ali. shaz619

He has batted well in the last year. Bad patch at the moment but I wouldn't be worried as an England fan. In a line up like England's is you should expect scores like that. He'll bounce back soon and I wouldn't think his spot in the team, or as a captain, is under threat

Is that including domestic performances ?

Morgan is the least of England's LOI team's worries. The biggest issue is the bowling, its a level below the likes of Australia, India and South Africa. Its just not a tournament winning attack. Willey doesn't do much beyond getting a bit of swing with the new ball early on. Wood is the quickest pacer in the side but is injury prone and the spinners cannot contain during the middle overs.

Their batting is explosive but doesn't seem able to adapt when conditions have something for the bowlers - see the CT SF in Cardiff or the ODI vs South Africa on a greentop at Lord's.

Morgan's legacy will be formed at the 2019 World Cup. He's missed two golden opportunities now to win a major tournament with this revamped England LOI team. He'll be playing on home soil and needs to show he can lead a team that can handle the pressure of expectations.

Was also pretty poor in CPL but given his record for this year, he needs to be persisted with until 2019. You can't change a captain with world cup close.

His poor performances get overlooked because of his reputation, Morgan easily gets away with it; he needs to show more intent, think he has taken his position for granted. Mo would be a great leader and he has some experience to leading the U19 England team in the World Cup whilst stepping in when required at Worcester, however am happy with his current position but if ECB decide to go in another direction I'd favour Mo ahead of Stokes/Butler but chances are those guys are going to be considered ahead of Mo

Reminds me of that time when he could not buy a run in Australia. But, there is not a single team in the world that would not include Morgan in its ODI and T20 team. He is the kind of player who wins matches under pressure.

Has been brilliant in ODIs.

Since Last Year

In IND: 57.66
In WI: 41.66

Vs IRL: 43.00
Vs SA: 53.33

In CT 2017: 52.00

Vs WI: 10.00

I mean this is incredible over the year. He's a brilliant player facing a rough patch of games.

Morgan is a top batsman who has literally taught the rest of England about the nitty-gritties of modern ODI cricket.

I wouldn't read too much into some county scores.

Root is almost 100% certain to take over as odi captain after the world cup in 2 yrs time

With the heavy Test schedule for the England team, 2 captains across 3 formats have been preferable and worked for them which means that nothing is 100%. Hence, Butler or Stokes are a lot more likely while Root continues as the Test captain.

i think they will give odi captaincy to root with someone else leading the t20 side. probably buttler.

although its much better to have one odi/t20 captain

They don't play many T20's and they go hand in hand with the ODI's which means that there will most likely be one captain for those formats like there is now but am pretty sure that Morgan will lead his country in the 2019 WC regardless, they've made a big investment in him and will back him all the way
