So the Chinese are eating shrews now, and have contacted a new virus . It's called the langya virus. 35 people have been infected so far.

At least 35 patients across 2 Chinese provinces have been infected with the phylogenetically distinct Langya henipavirus (LayV), according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The investigators reported that they could not find evidence that the virus transmitted between people, suggesting it is spreading zoonotically. Though the sample size is small, they suspect Langya virus was hosted by shrews before infecting humans

The biggest pandemics from China and other nations have come from eating Pigs. Swine flu has killed many, it has been around for centuries because eating pigs means you have to farm them. Flu can pass between a human and a pig easily.

People eat allsorts in parts of the world. I dont agree with eating such animals but rarely do they produce a virus on the scale of the swine flu.

Another source is bats - they are known to harbor tons of viruses.

I was once in Uganda on UN related work with some Chinese colleagues who very interested in trying some exotic meat there - particularly alligator & rhinoceros ones. Needless to say, i didnt accompany them to dinner any night!

It is something the Chinese need to look at but its difficult to change an ancient culture.

Im not trying to be biased but for me Muslims are told to eat the correct animals, the diet is balanced and not extreme either eating reptiles or extreme either only eating veg.

This virus will not become a worldwide pandemic, it seems jumping on the anti-chinese bandwagon. Viruses appear from various nations regularly, as in India a couple of years ago but no mention of them.

For example, in India some eat/drink cow's waste.

The wet markets concept is a fairly recent phenomenon. I read somewhere that the Chinese were ‘encouraged’ by the Communist govt to eat any kind of meat as a counter to the food crop shortage they had in the 60s-70s.

Currently zoonotic viruses mainly orriginate from 2 places- China & Africa for obvious food related reasons. There is a real chance though that drug resistant bacterias may originate from India as i hear there is wide scale antibiotic abuse there.
