Yoga thread

The day you come out of the mentality of war, warriors, killing, violence maybe you will recognize that the world today runs on soft power, good will and economic policies. Time to get out the 16th century mind-set

The last century has been the bloodiest of all but don't let facts come in the way of hippy meditation.

My point was nothing to do with violence or war , this is all in your head . You're weren't upside down with your legs crossed while writing this ?

My point was simply, to obtain a good strong , healthy physical body there are plenty of well known accepted methods over this. It's important to me to fit, strong & healthy & I don't have any aims of going to war lol

The NY times article suggests otherwise.

Maybe if Indians spent time doing martial arts while eating beef rather than pansy yoga poses while eating lettuce they would have been known in history as warriors in combat.

Yoga and Meditation helps your mind more than your body. I did some Yoga meditation last year. You won't know unless you actually do it.

I could do yoga when I was a kid. No chance now though, just simple stretches like you see footballers doing is enough. Many non-Indians swear by it so it must be of some benefit. I'm not really interested but good luck to those who practice it.

Yoga is big business now, people charge a bomb for it.... The poor chaps are better off copying from you tube

Don't do Yoga, prefer to run
But lots of people swear by it. Lots of fit people.

It will definitely not help you look like the terminator

You can get injured doing yoga and you can injured lifting weights.
Human body needs time to adapt.

There is no one way of measuring fitness
Who would you say is more fitter, Arnold at his peak or Usain Bolt?

Pilates is really good for core development though

Umm maybe if you did a simple search on wikipedia or google scholar you'll find several links to actual peer reviewed studies proving yoga's benefits? But I guess you can't expect that from someone who has been indoctrinated his whole life and decides to live with a narrow mind.

If Yoga is so good, why it has not helped your PM Modi. He has been doing it for a long time but he still look overweight.

Funny how some posters blame western media for showing Islam in poor light but use the same media's sources to ridicule something they don't like.

On that basis Israel has smacked Arab nations in 1967 one after the other say what?

I was talking in terms of physical man to man combat in relation to the thread to

Bhai yoga is not for man to man combat, it's more for fitness of mind and body.......However I don't think you need it since you have rock solid abs, muscular arms and are probably a great warrior on your own, girls also seem to be going weak in their knees in front of you,so yoga, which is a cultural heritage of India, may not be of any benefit to you.....

Beef makes a person stronger?Never really seen Sikhs have beef they are pretty strong Infact even vegetarian Sikhs are pretty strong.

Ive been lucky to do A LOT of sport.

Played cricket daily, done nets during entire summers.

Have played football 9 times a week etc.

Been to the Gym, done the treadmill for hours. Done 100's of squats, push ups and sit ups for months.

Ive done 90 days of P90x and got myself super fit.

ABOVE all compares nothing to the impact of Yoga. The hardest form of exercise i have ever done. Fantastic for anyone who wants to seriously look after themselves.

Is Yoga compatible with Islam?

The yoga thing has been gaining great popularity in western circles over the recent past. Not that I am judging anyone but many Indian Muslim's have also got in to the act as well. Some don't see any problem with it insisting it is similar to namaz but I strongly disagree. Though there could be some benefits in practising yoga do people on this forum feel it is compatible with Islam?

Absolutely nothing wrong with yoga. I started doing it a year ago now I can't go without doing it every morning right after I wake up.

I dont think there is any conflict with Islamic principles. It's just a form of stretching and body posture.

However I wouldn't waste my time with this nonsense.

Nothing wrong with doing Yoga.

For Me Yes We can do Yoga.

You ask your religious scholars.

Why and How it is a nonsense ? It has ill effects on one's health ?

I've never done it, but I wish I had started at an early age. Feels like all my flexibility which I had as a kid has gone. Those yoga poses are easy when you are 11 years old.

Most of the people dnt even know what even yoga is. I request all people to watch this video of sadhguru on yoga day at UN world yoga day platform. watch it till the end i request everyone. Its nothing religious about it. i am sharing a link for your convenience.

Yoga is not only about stretching and all. it is way beyond that.

Bump.

Anyone new posters feel Yoga actually has health benefits? :sachin

I am not too knowledgeable in regards to whether yoga has physical health benefits but I know many footballers have taken yoga seriously; it’s become a trend now for mental purposes.

I’m not saying yoga has a direct link to injury free careers but the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, Beckham and Giggs are fully committed to yoga and they all have had long careers. Composure on the pitch can be seen as natural attribute or as a result of yoga which perhaps has mentally strengthened players. Doctors recommend it too.

I’ve been very lucky, since the age of 7, I’ve completed all levels of swimming, played 2 seasons of junior county cricket and have played football/baseball at school and amateur level; was consistent with gym.

However only few months ago I’ve been diagnosed with paresthesia. Not sure how and why but it’s something which has not allowed me to go gym or do high intensity sports. As when I exercise or play any sports, I end up getting painful pins and needles/tingling burning sensations all over my body which has put me off sports; in sha Allah I’m confident this is just temporary.

Anyhow, to ensure I am active in someway; I’ve randomly decided to do yoga now even though I don’t sweat or burn calories as you would in sports/gym... It has actually ensured I am still active in someway without feeling any burning pins and needles and most surprisingly when I focus on breathing techniques it actually eases your stress/anxiety; articles also state that breathing techniques help your stress/anxiety levels. I can definitely sense that.

However I’ve also read reports that it prevents cancer, infections, heals cyst etc I don’t buy that at all lol. But does it relax you and keep you disciplined/moderately active? Definitely from my experience.

Combination of Salah, Yoga and Good oil free diet focusing on protein and high fibre has helped personally.

Sad to hear of your illness bro, may the Almighty give you the best of health. If it has helped you then of course keep doing it. I just dont buy the idea you need yoga to achieve the same results. For me it's nothing more than streching and breathing which you should do anyway before any physical exercise.

Yoga is not a physical exercise. There are many schools of yoga. Becoming fit is a side affect of yoga. Yoga means union. Union with the supreme. One who attains this unity is called as a yogi.

Every action we perform (with mind and body) is yoga.

Yoga has been part of this bharat land since thousands of years. Budhism, jainism or hinduism all Indian born religions has very special place for yoga.
Whole world has now recognized the yoga. Even Islamic countries celebrates yoga day now. It's not simply breathing and stretching. Half knowledge is very dangerous thing.

International Day of Yoga: Muted celebrations due to Covid-19

People in India and around the world are marking the seventh International Day of Yoga. But celebrations have been scaled down this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is known to be a yoga enthusiast, also avoided a mass session and instead chose to address the nation virtually to mark the occasion.

Over the years, Mr Modi has promoted yoga, often calling it India's gift to the world. On Monday, he said yoga had become a ray of hope for millions living in the middle of the pandemic. "No country was prepared when Covid-19 emerged. In these tough times, we all saw that yoga became a huge source of self-confidence," he said.

President Ram Nath Kovind also held a private yoga session at the presidential palace and several members of Mr Modi's cabinet held similar events across the country.

Mr Kovind said yoga was a "unique gift of India to humanity". Defence forces have also posted photos and videos of troops marking the day.

Officials and ministers also urged people to take to yoga but advised them to avoid big gatherings as the the country is just coming out from a deadly a second wave.

Covid lockdowns meant that millions had to stay indoors. Experts say yoga can be helpful in such scenarios to overcome anxiety.

The ancient tradition which was once the preserve of gurus has now become a worldwide phenomenon. Every year, practitioners all over the world bring out their mats on 21 June to show their love for yoga.

The UN declared in 2015 that 21 June every year will be marked as the Yoga Day. It said this year's theme focuses on "yoga for well-being". It said yoga can promote the holistic health of every individual amid the pandemic. It added that yoga played a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of Covid-19 patients in quarantine and isolation.

People in several parts of the world are also marking the day. People can be seen practising yoga at a park in front of the Three Gorges Dam in China's Hubei province.
