Yorkshire County Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of Shadab Khan for this year’s Vitality Blast competition.

The 23-year-old Khan already has a wealth of T20 experience for Pakistan, playing 64 matches and taking 73 wickets. The leg-spinning batsman will be available to play for Yorkshire Vikings’ first five matches before returning for the final six matches of the group stage.

Darren Gough, Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s Managing Director of Cricket said: “I have been watching the team from afar over the past four or five years and I think that we have lacked a couple of things that I would like to see. I would like our one day game to go in a different direction.

“Shadab Khan is someone who can bat at the top, bat in the middle order and hits the ball a long way. He is also an unbelievable spinner. You can imagine Shadab, Adil Rashid and Dom Bess bowling together, giving us a fantastic spin department.

The all-rounder will join up with fellow Pakistan international Haris Rauf who will be available for the first five Vitality Blast matches.

Yorkshire’s newest recruit Khan said: “I’m really excited to be heading to Yorkshire for the Blast. Ever since I started my cricketing journey it has always been a dream of mine to play county cricket. It will be made even more special with me being able to play alongside my good friend, Haris.

“I can’t wait to meet my team-mates and get going.”

Khan will join the Vikings subject to international clearance.

He has the potential to take the County circuit by storm - fitness may still be an issue.

Always did wonder why Yorkshire didn’t sign up more Pakistani players considering the large community in the area.

Is it just the T20 Blast or will he be part of The Hundred too?

Would be nice to see some more Pakistani taking part in the comp.

Pakistan tour Sri Lanka during a good chunk of the hundred so it's unlikely many players will be picked up.

Darren Gough has spoken of his delight at capturing three superstar overseas players as Yorkshire get set to tackle the 2022 summer.

The county have announced the capture of powerful New Zealand international batter Finn Allen for the second half of the Vitality Blast, to go with the previous signings of Pakistan duo Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan.

Allen, 22, arrives at Headingley having played Blast cricket for Lancashire last summer, when he was amongst the top 10 scorers in the competition with 399 runs in 13 games.

He is currently with David Willey at Royal Challengers Bangalore having also played in last summer’s Hundred with Birmingham Phoenix.

“I’m a big fan of Finn Allen,” said Gough, Yorkshire’s interim managing director of cricket.

“I was lucky enough to work on the Hundred last year, and I saw some very, very good limited overs players. He was definitely one of them.

“So he was high up on my target list when I took over as director of cricket. I’m delighted to get it over the line.

“He will be available from game six until the end, taking over from Haris Rauf.

“He’s young, he’s a great fielder and can also keep wicket. He fits into our squad perfectly. He’s played for the Red Rose, now he’s going to play for us.

“Shadab Khan as well, he is an absolutely amazing player.”

Leg-spinning all-rounder Khan – a signing announced on Friday – will be available for 11 group games split across two spells, boosting the Vikings chances of claiming a maiden Blast title.

He was the Player of the Tournament in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League, taking 19 wickets and scoring 268 runs.

“Shadab can bat as high as three, which he did in the PSL, or as low as six, seven or eight to really strengthen our lower order,” continued Gough. “He also bowls excellent leg-spin.

“No matter where we go now, we have quality spin in Shadab, Adil Rashid and Dom Bess. And that’s not forgetting the younger ones, Jack Shutt and the Sullivan brothers.”

Khan will do very well to bat at three in Yorkshire’s line-up, which includes Allen, Adam Lyth, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Harry Brook, David Willey and Will Fraine. The list goes on!

“We could also have Rooty available as well,” smiled Gough.

“Look, that’s not my decision, that’s down to the coach and captain.

“But I was having a laugh with Ottis the other day. We always used to do it going back to when I played. Everyone does it. Write down a potential eleven and try to fit everyone in.

“There are some difficult but positive decisions to be made.”

Gough says no decision has yet been made on a contingency plan should captain Willey miss the opening few games of the Blast to conclude Indian Premier League commitments with Bangalore.

“We’ll have to have a conversation,” he said. “But we have plenty of options who could do that if need be, loads of guys with experience. Shadab could even do a good job, like he did in the PSL.”

Head coach Ottis Gibson admitted in Friday’s media day press conference that success in this year’s Blast is a priority for a county who have yet to win the competition.

Gough agreed: “Yorkshire, as a limited overs side, we’ve had some very talented players. But we’ve fallen short too many times over the years.

“It’s now time to try and build a squad and side who can compete. We want to get that winning mentality.

“We have an explosive line-up, and it’s exciting for us. It should be exciting for our members and supporters as well.”

Pakistan quick Rauf is due to arrive in Leeds by the weekend, and he really does seem like Gough’s type of cricketer.

“I’m so excited about him, I really am,” he enthused. “I did that signing along with Lord Patel.

“Yes, we have a partnership with Lahore Qalandars. It doesn’t mean we have to sign one of their players, but Haris is someone who really excites me. So I was keen to get that done.

“He’s burst onto the scene in one-day cricket, but he’s very keen to develop his longer format game.

“I originally signed him just for the Championship, but once I found out he was available up until June 3, I thought it was a no-brainer to get him in for the first five Blast games as well.

“He pitches the ball up, which will be key in the Championship, and he’s hungry for success and to prove he’s not just a white ball player.”

According to reports, Shadab has left PCB's conditioning camp to travel to England for participating in the ongoing County Championship 2022-23.

He applied for NOC to participate in English domestic season and as per PCB "Shadab applied for NOC to participate in County Championship. He has been provided the NOC - He will return back if he is selected in the ODI squad for home series against West Indies"

So it's JAMODI's against West Indies C team or county cricket experience. Let's hope the selectors can show some common sense here. Nawaz could do with a run anyway.

In squad for the T20 Blast game tonight

Spin it to win it could be the key to Yorkshire’s hopes of Vitality Blast success this year, believes coach Ottis Gibson.

Gibson is relishing the prospect of having senior spin options in leggies Shadab Khan and Adil Rashid and offie Dom Bess at his disposal as he prepares for tomorrow’s North Group opener against Worcestershire Rapids at Headingley (6.30pm).

“I think our point of difference this year, certainly in the beginning, is that we’ve got two leg-spinners,” said Gibson.

“The fact we have Rash for a few games first up is fantastic for us and for him because he needs to play some cricket. Shadab was the player of the year in the Pakistan Super League, so he’s going to be outstanding for us.

“That will be a novelty in T20 cricket. Not many teams will have two leg-spinners and two world-class ones as well.

“Dom as well. There is an opportunity to use three spinners. If we can have 12 overs of quality spin, that can suffocate some teams.”

The Vikings will line up for their first three games, including Friday’s Roses blockbuster over at Emirates Old Trafford – live on Sky Sports, with some serious firepower available.

Harry Brook and Joe Root will play before Test duty, while Pakistan overseas duo Khan and fast bowler Haris Rauf will play the first four before returning home for national commitments.

Dawid Malan will also be in the Vikings’ team until England go to the Netherlands for a one-day series (June 17-22), the same with Rashid.

“We have to capitalise on the availability of the players we have and see if we can get off to a good start with some wins and set the platform for what we hope will be a good tournament,” continued Gibson.

“To get to Finals Day would be a fantastic outcome for us this season.”

Gibson was a Blast winner as a player with Leicestershire (2004) and a World T20 winner as a coach of the West Indies (2012). So he knows exactly what qualities a side needs to taste success.

“Having balance all the way through, having people who can play different positions and people that can adapt because the game is always moving and shaping in different ways,” he said.

“We have a lot of options, but the captain (David Willey) will be a miss because this is a format he’s good at.

“Dave has been messaging me from India about various match-ups of the team, who plays where. We’ve looked at these different scenarios. It’s going to be an interesting team to select on Wednesday, but I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be a squad effort if we are to make it to Finals Day.

“There will be a change in personnel, guys coming in and out. But if we can have the same attitude throughout the tournament and individual performances coming from different parts of the group, then that gives us a really good chance of getting to Finals Day.

“We just have to find the right positions for all our different pieces and give them the wings to go out and express themselves, entertain the crowd and win games.”

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is set to keep wicket in his first appearance of the season, against his former county, who were Blast winners themselves in 2018.

They have signed New Zealand all-rounder Colin Munro as one of their two overseas players, who is expected to be available. Dwayne Bravo arrives in a couple of weeks.

Last season’s clash between these two at Headingley will never be forgotten.

Yorkshire slipped to 50-5 in 10.5 overs, only for Harry Brook and Jordan Thompson to share a stunning unbroken 141 for the sixth wicket. Brook made 83 and Thompson 66 to underpin a winning total of 191-5.

It was the highest sixth-wicket partnership in the history of the Blast and the second highest ever in the world for that particular wicket.

Coach Gibson has actually floated the idea of Thompson being rested for this week’s meeting following a heavy schedule of six back-to-back Championship games.

But the all-rounder, who has since played in the Hundred, the Big Bash and the Pakistan Super League, recalled of last year: “It doesn’t seem like two minutes since that night.

“In the situation it occurred, it was massive for both of us. It happened at such a rate of knots. It was nearly a world record.

“After that game, I took massive confidence into the rest of the summer and into the winter. It kick-started quite a good year for me.”

Meanwhile, interim managing director of cricket Darren Gough has spoken of his confidence in Yorkshire’s ability to press strongly for a maiden Blast title.

He said: “When I went back to Yorkshire as captain in 2007, I put a specific emphasis on the one-day and T20 games. I love it. I brought specific roles to individual players.

“When I was there, it was more overseas players for all year rather than specific competitions.

“This time, I’ve tried to bring in overseas for specific competitions. Haris, Shadab and Finn (Allen) will go down as players who play this form of the game very well.

“Ottis is also a winner, a born winner.

“It’s weird how the fixtures have worked, with six of our first seven games at home. But we can hopefully get off to a good start and go from there.

“There are a lot of good teams in the Blast. It’s quite open. Anyone can beat anyone.

“A lot are signing players are showing significant intent.

“A lot have been further ahead of the curve than we have on that over the years, but we’ve entered the race with the players we’ve signed.

“And we also have so many other talented players who’ve done well in this format. Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Lythy, Thompson and Willey. Our youngsters as well, whether it be Revis, Loten, Wharton. They will all get an opportunity to impress.”

The Blast format is unchanged for 2022, although Finals Day is earlier – on July 16 at Edgbaston.

This is the first of 14 North Group games. The top four teams out of nine qualify for the quarter-finals.

Shadab in the XI for Yorks vs Worcs in the T20 blast along with Haris Rauf

Surprised he's playing county given his fitness struggles of late.

I thought PCB may have monitored his fitness at the NHPC camp.

0/33 off his 4 overs tonight against Lancs.

Not in great form atm.

Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan are set for their final appearance (in game vs Derbyshire tonight) before reporting for international duty, though the latter should return after June 12.

Looked a bit rusty for Yorkshire, but got limited chances.

Big series coming up for him against West Indies - a good chance for him to prove his form and fitness.

Pretty average performances to date this season.

Shadab selected today, slated at #5, in the T20 Vitality Blast game against Derbyshire.

Shadab Khan on 26*, building a good partnership with Harry Brook currently.

Really poor stats in the Blast for Shadab so far:

With the ball - 1 wicket at an average of 146. Economy rate of 9.12

Gets a wicket vs Derbyshire - 1/19 in 2 overs

wicketless again tonight

That’s atrocious, seems to have lost his way completely.

Another poor showing with the bat. Out for 3 tonight off 5 balls.

A bit better with the ball tonight for Shadab:

4-31-2

4-0-38-2 with the ball and 15 off 8 balls against Birmingham in the T20 Blast.

Hit around again.

1 for 48 from 4 overs today versus Leicestershire.

Another flop with the bat.

6 off 10 balls.

Very ordinary season continues.

A truly awful T20 Blast stint for Shadab:

He's been a passenger.

Not one good performance.

Expected much better from him.

One of his better knocks for Yorkshire tonight in the QF v Surrey. Not that it’s saying much, but still. 21 off 12

Actually had a solid game and contributed towards the famous Yorkshire win.

Now needs to turn up on Finals Day as well and then (if he does) an otherwise rather abject and disappointing stint could end on a very decent note for player & club.

His release is poor and that means he doesnt get enough side spin. I met someone that talks to him and tried to explain to him that the ball is being released from underneath his hand and because of that he doesnt get the sidespin, and just as importantly, the over spin he needs to get bounce.

To illustrate my point look at Shadabs hand at the point of release and Shane Warnes leg spinning ball top left. Shane release is more side of the hand and he get more over spin.

Injuries have impacted his overall rotation I guess but not sure about his release from hand. However, the issue with most modern day LOI leggies is that they are LOI specialists generally and thus the focus is on variations, along with those flatter trajectories when batsmen are attacking. The side spin is the key for a conventional leggy in red ball cricket (Anil and Yasir are exceptions with comparatively less reliance on that).

Shadab needs a redball season imo which will help his bowling immensely in my opinion, around injuries he has currently played too much whiteball cricket with little too no red ball cricket. A season of red ball would help his batting technique's refinement too. All upto him if he wants to be able to play all 3 formats and play even the whiteball formats with more control and impact with his bowling. Otherwise even in his current shape he is still one of the best LOI spinners we have.

Shadab playing today in the SF of T20 Blast

His team is batting.

His T20 Blast stint numbers for Yorkshire:

Innings 11, Runs 134, Average 13.40, SR 127.61

Wickets 9, Average 41.77, Econ 8.95

Overall really poor numbers only improved slightly by the last 2 matches he played.
