Pakistan veteran batsman Younus Khan hopes that when he leaves international cricket after the three-match Test series against West Indies, he will be remembered as a team man whose only focus was performing for his side.

“When I am not in this dressing room, when I am not playing international cricket, I want youngsters to think of me as a role model,” said Younus in a video interview for the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Facebook account. “I want them to think that what Younus bhai would do in different situations. I want them to think of me when I leave. I want to leave such a legacy.”

“Also, I want everyone to remember me as a team man, as a batsman who always played for Pakistan and the team,” he added.

Favourite moments

Younus, who has represented Pakistan in 115 Tests, 265 ODIs and 25 T20Is, when asked to name his favourite innings said: “My first Test run was the most important one for me. It was a memorable one. I scored that against Sri Lanka in 2000 in Rawalpindi. Almighty helped me score a century too [in the second innings].”

He then enlisted some other great moments of his career. “My 149-run innings against New Zealand in Auckland, the innings against India in Calcutta, where we were playing after a Test match defeat, then I made 200 in Bangalore, and the 175 in Australia, the innings in England, and yes, the triple hundred. Pakistan youngsters needed someone to look up to at that time; that innings made me the third-ever Pakistani to score a triple ton.”

10,000 runs celebration

The 39-year-old Younus has scored 9,977 runs in Tests, the highest by any national cricketer, and he needs only 23 runs to become the first Pakistani to enter the elite list of scoring 10,000 runs in the longest format, but how does he want to celebrate it?

“When I think of celebrating [10,000 runs], I want to go overboard,” he joked. “When I surpassed Javed [Miandad’s] record, I wanted to go give my bat, my gloves to some youngster or the crowd but you can’t do all that in international cricket. Plus you are not playing at home. If you are playing at home then it is understandable that you stop the match for five minutes and do something with the crowd. However, this time around, I’ll request the people to let me celebrate however I want.”

He was anything but a team man. Had he retired 2-3 years ago when he was declining, he would have remembered like this. Same goes to Misbah.

Atleast he could have retired from the Odis at the right time after the Mohali 2011 defeat but he kept on dragging his Odi career by throwing hissy fits, blackmailing the board and complaining to the media. Has played for an additional 7-8 years in the Odi team to prove his worth to the format .

Younis would definitely go down as a legend. But he is not a team man due to following action:

1) Not accepting captaincy after Inzi retired.
2) Retiring from T20s and then coming back in 2012 NZ series so he can play in ODIs.
3) Not being selected and then throwing tantrums to participate in World Cup 2015.
4) Not retiring after 2015 World Cup and insisting he could play, only to retire during innings break during the first ODI against BD in 2015.
5) Finally, retiring with Misbah, when he could clearly play Test cricket for 2 more years, and guiding another youngster for his and Misbah's place.

The reason # 5 for sure. A great Batsman (who mostly felt disrespected). A legend. No, need to be remembered as a team man or a nice man or a Gentle man . More like a Warrior with an iron resolve (and some diva like entitlement, well nobody is perfect).

Lol. Had a huge role in getting us to #1 during this period and you wanted him to retire before then. Anyways, keep crying, you and the rest of his nine haters. Keep crying while everyone with a drop of Pakistani blood praises this absolute legend.

Younis bhai, you definitely were a team player, an ATG batsman and will be terribly missed. Looking forward to seeing that 10,000 runs celebration. Maybe celebrate it with 10,000 pushups? :yk

Younis retires: Not a team player
Younis comes back from retirement: Not a team player.
Younis does not accept the captaincy: Not a team player.
Younis wants the captaincy: Not a team player.

If he was team man he wouldn't have remind us all the time

Test legend but also one of the most selfish players to ever put on the shirt, I can never forgive him for 2015

He's a legend with an ego. Not arrogance, but an ego. Half the people criticizing him for it would act in the same exact manner if they were half the player he is

Ok, lets assume I am the Younis Khan of my workplace which I won't disclose.
Year 1-5 I took almost anything at work. Even went to the field for a year (a valuable experience for any Engineer though) to help my company when no one else want to. That's what you call being a team player. Upon coming back, a Lead Engineer quit, and I was asked if I could lead one of the major projects in the company. I did that without hesitation, and didn't quit or step down from the lead role. I didn't throw tantrums that I am not respected.
And now, I have few juniors I am mentoring, and not quiting the company while the rest of the folks around me have gone on to different opportunties/companies.

Point is, that Younis is a legend, a great player, probably Pakistan's greatest test batsman. But he was not a team player. He was though only before being handed vice-captaincy during Inzi's captaincy.

huh? he averages almost 60 in the last 3 years and avg 50 or more against every team apart from NZ

get out of here

As for him being selfish, I have no problem with it considering he averages more in won tests than he does in his career, almost 2/3 of his centuries have come in won tests and he has one of the best batting second records of all time.

I'd take that over any of this "team spirit" rubbish any day.

Most people are calling him selfish for not retiring in ODIs and waiting atleast 5 years to retire. Tests is a totally different ball game.

Personally i think he should've retired in ODIs after 2011 WC. But I also wanted him to stay in tests till end of next year atleast.

the guy who used the Media propaganda to get himself into the ODI team, and yet did nothing...

I will always remember this guy as a dramaybaaz

If this guy was a team man, then why didn't he himself leave the ODI before an important tourny like the World Cup when it was clear he wasn't performing.

Neither a legend nor a team man.

He insisted in playing in WC 2015, performance was disaster
He insisted to keep playing in test, was playing one good inning after 10 failures.

Was King at UAE like wickets, though, not in New Zealand, Australia and SA, even in England failed in 7 innings in a row.

A team man he certainly was. Never felt he ever played for himself at all. The smiling assassin always put the country first and was a is/was a fine fielder as well.

You want him to continue to play test, really ? Any mediocre domestic player can score one good inning after failing in 10 innings in test. He was a good batsman in UAE like conditions, but at this age he is not capable of even that now, time to move on.

Anything but a team man. He should have known that there was no place for him in the 2015 world cup. There were at least 10 better players than him in domestic cricket for LOI's but he still insisted to go. In fact, insisted is a small world. He legit threw tantrums. A legend of the Test format but I would never call him a team man. He was selfish. Always criticized Misbah while the man led the team like a champ.

He is more fit than the rest of the 10 players in the team. Besides he is still our best test batsman, even atthis age.

bus this man has won more matches for us than ur beloved misbah who is hanging for 18 more tests where his job is just to go for the toss..

Wow, I'm no YK fan but disrespect from Pak fans is disgraceful. He's a Pakistani legend for sure, one of our greatest test batsmen of all time! Played many memorable innings but my favorite will always be the one at Bangalore that helped us draw the series in India! Has a knack of hitting a double-hundred to square away series :) Also, being the least likely person to do it -- captaining Pakistan to a T20 victory is his second crowning achievement (after his service as a test batsman).

About team man - he definitely is a team man for the most part. The fact that he was a dreadful ODI batsman and ruined Malik's career is not a fault of his own, but rather the selectors & coach(es). If he had not been selecting for ODIs for as long as he did, he would be remembered even more endearingly. Regardless, I will give him a standing ovation when he retires :)

How ironic.

He is some team man by the look of statements from sharyar khan who indicated that younis has retired after he was not offered captaincy

eh I odn't think YK should have retired from ODIs in 2010. It makes no sense.
