Tell me any thing or memory which you used to think were real but was actually false.

Let me start

When I used to hear a song Maaon ki dua puri hoe by alamgir I used to believe he is referring to cat's prayer and I used to ask my dad when will cat come in the video.

I also used to think that Sony playstation is actually Sohni playstation and were made by Sohni Sweets.

What were your memories/perception which you believed to be true at that time?

Used to believe that Naag Mani, Amrit, Alladin's Lamp were all real. Asked my father for a Naag Mani on my birthday. Was barely 5-6 years old then.
My cousin heard a story from our grandfather of big flying duck who could drop and pick him up from school and he made huge drama that he want it now and even hit her mother with his shoes.

This one is extremely funny , My friend didn't know the difference between Aando and Gandu , and few days before the Eid his father bought a aando Bakra and he starts screaming in excitement in front of all other uncles and kids that his father has bought a Gandu bakra and his father was standing embarrassed in front of other uncles.

LOL!!!

I used to think that Shahrukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Mohammad Azharuddin, Javed Akhtar etc represented regular Muslims of our country who were as liberal and open minded a a regular Hindu and wanted to genuinely contribute towards the growth of Bharat like regular Hindus exception being the regular corrupt and careless people found everywhere in all communities. Secular Bollywood movies, secular media, secular TV ads made me believe that Muslims were always eager to befriend and mingle with hindus and were not only extremely patriotic towards Bharat but went out of their way in searching for opportunities and occasions to showcase their love and dedication towards Bharat. I was made a believer in the so called Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb.

This was my belief as a kid growing up in Punjab where Muslims formed 1-2% of the demographics. When my knowledge of my country enhanced thanks to a lot of travel as i grew up, talking to localities and seeing first hand the issues that existed in many parts of Bharat and seeing the national politics play out the way it did in the last decade, i can say that it’s been a revelation for me.

The overwhelming majority of Muslims in Bharat turned out to be extremely closed minded people hateful of Hinduism and did not give a damn about Bharat as a country, made no efforts to ever stand up for our country in time of need rather strategically remained absent whenever we needed their support. This entire community of 400 million people comes last in our growth story of the last two decades, comes last in enhancing our global image as a growing nation, but comes first in demanding freebies, comes first in conspiring against our country time and again, comes first in our country in always looking to create communal divide and tension.

When i had limited knowledge about my own country, I fought with my friends, my best friends, my closest relatives to defend them. There are relationships i lost while trying to defend these people. But as I grew up, as my knowledge about my country grew, i realized i had been taken for a ride by the secular propaganda of the last many decades just like millions of other kind hearted hindus who just want that no minority is ever hurt in our country. We will go to any length to defend the rights of minority, will go against our own kith and kin but when there is a community whose sole purpose is to establish Islamic caliphate by eradicating Hinduism, who remain non cooperative in the growth story of our nation , then we will show no remorse.
Bro you are a very innocent soul corrupted by social media and now you have become a racist , you still have time to change and stop being simple minded that you start believing whatever is showing to you.

Dont ruin the thread.

Grew up watching lots of hindi movies.

Recall one actress saying choone se bacha ho jata hai.

I forbade myself to ever touch girls, changed directions every time.

I used to make assumptions that if movies have more heroes it’s a better movie and that’s why i pestered my dad to buy Suraksha’s audio cassette and my goodness it was terrible.

May be movies spolied me but I used to think babies are born when a man and women sleeps together in a room.. as an adult its still the same they have sleep together :p

Our domestic help once made a paper boat for me when I was barely 4 years old. I cried for probably 3-4 hours wanting him to sit on that boat and travel on a pond.

I thought Kane & Undertaker were real life brothers and bought the idea that the latter burned the former, hence the mask. Kayfabe was still somewhat maintained but there were always whispers surrounding the validity of pro wrestling during the inception of the internet. One of the first things the child me wanted to know was who is the man behind the mask, and is he really burnt? the early web pages would show images like these for ‘Kane WWF unmasked’ searches:

I’d laugh out loud and say to myself, that’s not friggin Kane ahaha what a joke, and so my believability in the kayfabe was extended as was the myth of Kane, I feared him more than the Undertaker.

Yeah the WWF/E had us all convinced with their storylines.

If I wear a wristband like Waqar, I can bowl very fast and break stumps, like him.

I was into wristbands when I was a little kid.

I remember one of my relatives once gifted me a wristband. I was wearing it very frequently (even at home).

I used to think as a Kid that God is real and he watches everything you do and punishes you if you do any mischief. :misbah

Some other things I used to believe are, swallowing gum will kill you, 3 people cannot go out together as it will lead to disasters, Sneezing before going out somewhere will lead to failure. All of these were learned from friends and elders. :vk2

Pak army na hoti tau Pakistan tabah ho jata
Happens to everyone, I remember reading where the slogan was “Indira is India”, very similar to ones I read on Modi now.

The cycle of hero worship but how was that your childhood’s false understanding, are you one of those meme kids that hates India?

This is going to sound stupid but I developed myopia very early on in my life although it was not discovered till I was 9 or 10, so I did not have glasses and watching cricket matches on TV back in the 80s, I always thought the cricket stumps were basically two rows of three stumps each, because they seemed to blur into double for me eve on the standard definition 320 x 240 high end Sony TVs back then. :ROFLMAO:

I've never hated India but did love Pakistan. Now I realize how patriotism is just a hollow entity that rulers throw at the faces of gullible people to gaslight them when they question their policies.

When I was younger, I used to be a super-patriot and a hardcore nationalist.

As I grew older, I realized patriotism/nationalism only benefit those at the top (elites). Common people often suffer no matter who is in power.

Interesting take but that’s about anything that involves a community:
Corporate, Religion, Political party.

Are you loyal to anything? Are you patriotic towards Canada?

Why ask such a question on this thread? This is supposed to be a lighthearted thread.

I am of course loyal to Canada and Bangladesh. I try to be a productive citizen wherever I live.

Don't derail the thread.

My bad. I thought you were serious when you said you are not patriotic towards BD.

A lot of these things that you mentioned are social constructs or agendas that suit a particular elite. I'm not against religions or rules but if you critically analyze any religion you'll see it highly favoring one particular niche segment of the society, this is across the board true for almost all religions in one way or the other. I don't need to name names of religions but you just look at how they are functioning currently & you'll see one small segment reaping the benefits while all others will be either paying the cost or not having access to that benefit pie.

I agree with you bro but don’t go far away from the society that you feel so frustrated why people can’t see it.

You do have a point but normally, I'm not the kind of person who wants people to change their opinions so if someone comes up to me and is like "the sky is red", I'm more like, "yeah, great for you". I guess aging plays a role, not mature enough to say this is my final form but we continue to evolve/devolve with the passage of time so let's see how this goes.

Hoping that I avoid becoming a really bitter person though, that would be so unlike me if that happens, I like my jovial slightly not so smart self way more than any other avatar of my personality. Thanks for taking your time to say something nice just so you know.

Nothing beats self growth and introspection.

Not really in my opinion at least. I think a lot of us posters who have been posting for a long time now don't really post that seriously except a few.
