Directors are the one largely responsible for what a movie would look like. They are the driving force behind it.Ever since the beginning of motion pictures era the world has been blessed with some exceptionally talented auteurs ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Martin Scorsese to Ong Kar Wai to David Fincher. So it's really hard to pick just one from this lot of incredibly genius people who took the art of film making to great new lengths and made cinema viewing an experience worth remembering for.
My vote goes to none other than David Lynch. An incredibly underrated filmmaker, his movies has a bit of surrealism about them blending dark thematic elements into a light tone.Be it the blue velvet or lost highway, with weird and gory characters and slew of symbolism he mystifies his audiences making them truly live the cinema experience. Therefore it's no surprise that his masterpiece mulholland drive was voted amongst the greatest movies of 21st century in many polls.
It would be nice if mods can add a poll.Thanks.

Indian: Hrishikesh Mukherjee,Guru Dutt,Yash Chopra,Bimal Roy,Bala

Others:Cameron Crowe,Martin Scoresese,Christopher Nolan,Robert Zemeckis any order.

I doubt anyone else will mention him so I'm going to give a shoutout to John Carpenter, he's made a few stinkers but the variety present in his filmography can't be ignored. He's made legit horror like Halloween and The Thing, action thrillers like Assault on Precinct 13 and Escape from New York and martial arts comedy in the form of Big Trouble in Little China.

Those are genuinely all-time classic movies and it's no surprise that Hollywood keeps trying to remake them. Even his crappy movies end up having a great deal of character and rarely end up being boring.

Oh yeah, he composed the scores for almost all of his movies too.

A genuine master.

In terms of sheer quality, I have to give it to Hayao Miyazaki. I'm not sure if he's ever made a bad movie.

I'd say Christopher Nolan is probably one of the best directors ever.

Nobody who made Dark Knight Rises can be one of the best directors ever. He can be your favourite, sure, but not best.

Give most directors the script of Dark Knight Rises and they'd fail to better Nolan's work 9 out of 10 times.

I can count at least 15 directors that would give Nolan run for his money. He's definitely good not denying that but his fans would make it sound like he's the next best thing when it is clearly not true.

Dude. They sent every cop into the sewers.

ALL OF THEM.

If you think only 10% of directors would read that and think "This is stupid" then I don't know what to tell you.

And they all came out clean shaved.Didn't know Bane had a special saloon opened for them down under just to cater to their needs .

And they attacked what is effectively a private army armed with superior weaponry and armored vehicles by charging at them in a straight line.

Man, what an offensively stupid movie from beginning to end.

Batman series was critically acclaimed but his best movie was Memento, no doubt an incredibly talented director; his resume proves that but not sure if he's an ATG jus yet although close given that perhaps he'd need to display a bit of versatility by making a movie beyond the crime/thriller/sci-fi genre's or something which he hasn't made before but I'd expect him to pull it off

I'm looking forward to his Dunkirk movie, mostly because the whole story is so incredible so as long as Nolan doesn't cock it up it should be great.

Greatest will be the below (in Hollywood) -- no particular order

1. Kubrick
2. Scorcese
3. Spielberg
4. Cameron/Nolan

Dark Knight Rises wasn't great ,even Batman begins had flaws, but Dark knight was amazing ,guess he got carried on by the "box office pressure" for Rises.

Insomnia movie I found it surprisingly nice also made by Nolan although it was slow, liked the premise of it though.
Big Mac most of his other movies are pretty good, have seen so many directors come up and go but Spielberg and Nolan have atleast held imagination of two generations with their fantasy.

Best : Christopher Nolan, Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Cameron. Worst: Ron Howard
