He devoted himself to Allah, deciding all forms of music were against the faith."

"Yusuf was conflicted about playing again, but the war in Afghanistan was raging and another conflict was looming in Iraq. Yusuf says that the world needed to see at least one nonviolent Muslim on TV.".

So he doesn't say that his former claim that it was against islam was wrong. Strange dude.

I think he might have joined the Salafis earlier on and later came into mainstream sunnism. In the latter you have qawwalis and naats. I listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan every now and again he's one of the rare musicians that unites Indians and Pakistanis alike in recognition of his brilliance.

Think it's a bit unfair. A persons understanding of something as deep and as complex as faith is forever changing. Iqra, first word of the Quran, the more you read, the deeper your understanding of something.

And I wouldn't expect him to be getting into theology during an interview with a mainstream music magazine

I'm pretty sure music is forbidden in Islam.

Scholarly opinions range from everything is forbidden except the duff or drums to everything is allowed except for certain conditions:

-no lewd wordings for sexual connotation
-no swears
-words have to be positive and uplifting
-all musical instruments are allowed

I almost always give the most liberal opinions for the Muslims in the west.

Who cares. I love his music. All of it. As Cat Stevens and as Yusuf Islam.

You're obviously not a Muslim, so why does it matter to you? Unless you're thinking of converting that is (highly unlikely going by your posting history) and music is going to be a major factor in your decision?

Agree, as far as there's no negative influence, you may enjoy!

Just to make it clear, people may have different opinions and I'm OK with that but since this is about my religion, I can't help but comment and bring forward the truth.

Music is NOT forbidden in Islam. The opinion that playing music is some satanic practice is a myth and this extremely orthodox version of Islam condemning everything that involves entertainment was brought about by some particular caliphs only to drive people away from Islam in the future.

Of course, music about violence, sexual intercourse, rape, hate, racism, sexism and other derogatory/insulting forms of it are not allowed but that goes without saying for all mediums of art, be it poetry, music, anything.

You can look up Ghamdi's opinion on this. He gives good reasoning and proof from Islamic history and the life of the Prophet (PBUH) proving it's allowed. However, if you are a follower of someone like Zakir Naik, Mufti Menk, please ignore my post.

False. It isn't.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments.”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari)

Every sensible Muslim would notice that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said “there will certainly be people who permit,” which means that these things which are mentioned here are not permitted.

And of course no one has doubt about the prohibition of zinaa, silk (for Muslim men) and alcohol, so why doubt about musical instruments which are mentioned in the same category?

Those are traditions or hadiths which are passed down the generations. I would say there is doubt about all of them, just the fact that there are different sects which hold to some of the hadiths and others who don't would suggest that there are plenty of doubts.

Not all forms of Music is banned in Islam. Problem is that to many Muslim's instead of thinking for themselves depend on what some egotistic Imam says.

Or some non-Muslim Indian in the Time Pass section of a Pakistani forum.
