Zohran Mamdani Topples Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic Mayoral Primary

Zohran Mamdani is set to become the Democratic candidate in New York City’s upcoming mayoral election, after delivering a shocking upset against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who long led polls in the primary race but conceded Tuesday night before the votes were even finished being counted as it became clear that Mamdani possessed a commanding and insurmountable lead.

“Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo told his supporters, adding of Mamdani: “Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

It’s unclear if Cuomo will run as an independent in the November election.

Mamdani, 33, is a Democratic Socialist state assemblymember. He emerged victorious from the contentious primary after running a largely grassroots campaign focused on reducing the cost of living for New Yorkers. The Uganda-born politician has touted plans including the launch of city-owned grocery stories, free buses, and free childcare for city residents up to age 5.

The Democratic candidate for New York City’s mayor will likely be the city’s next leader, as Democrats have won the last three mayoral elections. Mamdani’s success comes in part due to endorsements by popular progressive candidates, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Local groups including immigrant rights nonprofit Make The Road Action New York, and Teamsters Local 804 have also supported Mamdani. His campaign attracted thousands of individual donors and volunteers.

The state assemblymember surged in the polls in recent weeks and was shown advancing ahead of Cuomo, who served as governor for a decade, in a major independent polling simulation survey by Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill published a day before the election. Polling for the survey took in mind the ranked-choice voting system used by voters.

Cuomo’s win would have marked his comeback to civil leadership after his 2021 resignation as governor following a series of sexual harassment allegations made by more than a dozen women. An investigation into Cuomo by the New York Attorney General’s Office found that he had sexually harassed a number of employees and made a “hostile work environment for women.” Cuomo has denied the most serious accusations levied against him, but has acknowledged that he “acted in a way that made people feel uncomfortable.”

Mamdani will face current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is running in the race as an independent, as well as Republican Curtis Sliwa and another independent campaign by Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor, in November’s election.

Here’s what to know.

How does ranked choice voting work?

New York City uses a ranked-choice voting process to elect the mayor, comptroller, borough president, and other elected officials. Under this system, voters can rank their top five candidates for a position.

Voters also have the option to vote for one candidate, or rank fewer than five, if they so choose.

Candidates who receive more than 50% of first-choice votes win the election. But if there is no candidate that receives a majority of the first-choice votes, then votes are tallied in rounds. The candidate with the least amount of votes in the prior round is eliminated, and voters who ranked that candidate at the top of their remaining choices will instead have their vote count towards their next preferred choice. That process continues until it comes down to two candidates, at which point the person with the most votes will win.

What happens next?

Mamdani’s win is just the start of the general election. Tuesday’s vote was merely a primary to determine who will be representing the Democratic Party. The winner must now compete against Sliwa, the sole Republican candidate running in the race, as well as the independent candidates. Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, a group that encourages civilian patrol of the streets, has identified himself as an anti-Trump Republican who wants greater safety in the city.

Sliwa lost to Adams, whose term officially ends on Jan. 1, during the last election in 2021.

The next mayor will be chosen on Nov. 4. Voters will once again be able to rank multiple candidates in the general election.

What about Eric Adams?

Adams, who campaigned and won as a Democrat in 2021, was notably absent from Tuesday’s ballot, though he is still running for reelection.

Adams’s tenure in office has been clouded in scandal after he was charged with bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and taking campaign contributions from foreign nationals in his previous mayoral campaign. The federal indictment, which was unsealed last September, claims that Adams gave “favorable treatment” to officials who gave money or other contributions to his campaign. Though he faced pressure to resign, the mayor did not heed calls to step down and has maintained his innocence.

The Department of Justice, which levied the charges against Adams, dropped their case against the mayor in April, saying that it would interfere with his ability to implement the Trump Administration’s immigration policies. The judge that granted the dismissal called it “disturbing.” “Everything here smacks of a bargain: dismissal of the indictment in exchange for immigration policy concessions,” the judge wrote, according to the Associated Press.

That same month, Adams withdrew his candidacy for the Democratic primary, saying the legal battle had prevented him from effectively campaigning. “I’m in the race to the end. I’m not running on the Democratic line. It’s just not realistic to turn around my numbers and to run a good campaign [from] where we are right now,” Adams told Politico.

Adams says he still aligns with the Democratic Party.

How frequent are mayoral elections in NYC?

Mayoral elections for New York City are held every four years.

Mayors can serve up to two consecutive four-year terms. Term limits restrict candidates from running for a third term unless a different candidate has served at least one term in between the time the mayor “last held such office,” per the New York City Charter.

Congratulations to Zohran.

He’s an Indian-American Muslim with strong views against our current government. Yet a very talented young politician. I wish him the best and hopefully this is the beginning of a great career for him.

He seems like an honest, sincere politician committed to doing what's best for his city. Which is quite rare these days. His campaign was based on an anti-establishment, rent reform agenda that clearly resonated with average New Yorkers and young people.

When it comes to his views he seems to be on the right side on everything. The highlight of his campaign was during the debate when he and the other candidates were asked which country would they visit first if they became Mayor? And almost everyone towed the line and said Israel. Except Mamdani who said he would stay in NYC and work with Jewish New Yorkers to solve their problems.

Beating Cuomo is no small feat for someone with essentially zero experience. Cuomo was the Governor of NY at one point and has years of political experience. Not to mention, he comes from a very politically-connected family. Even his dad was the Governor of NY once upon a time. On top of that Cuomo is backed by billionaires, Zionists and numerous other powerful people.

The hard work will start for him now when he goes up against the Republic Zionist machine.
He won’t have it easy. But one thing is clear, at least in the primaries, being pro-Palestine is no longer the political death sentence it once was.

He is an out and out socialist and believes in wonderful things like Rent Freezing, Defunding Police, Anti-LGBT bias by police, Taxing rich heavily…

What a great guy to represent NY. Freeloaders and Leachers celebrating.

How rich are you, exactly? And if you’re that rich, where do you even find the time to obsessively hate on commoners on PP? Shouldn’t you be busy enjoying your wealth instead of crying online?

Who is hating? US is built on capitalism and merit. Not socialism and freeloaders.

If I wanted to live in a fully socialist or semi-socialist country(India), I would not have moved to US.

By the way, I am rich enough to live comfortably. :apology

He won on merit. He received the votes.

Let’s be real, the only true freeloaders here are the billionaires dodging taxes while the rest hustle to survive.

And no, you didn’t leave India because of socialism, you left for better opportunities, cleaner air, safer streets, and a shot at a more stable life.

The US is still a capitalist country. All he’s trying to do is make it slightly less brutal, like making insulin affordable or giving working families a break. You know, the kind of “promises” Trump made while golfing with lobbyists and handing tax cuts to his donors.

I am not talking about the electoral process. I am talking about his radical leftist and socialist ideas.

I left India because merit is not respected and freebies are given to people who do not deserve it. You don’t have to put reasons in my head.

He is trying to make US capitalism less brutal? :asif ? US is fine the way it is. His radical ideas may work in Cuba or Venezuela. His stance on rich needs to pay more taxes means pushing rich to Florida or Texas or Nevada. His defunding the police stance is an even bigger joke. I hope does not follow any of the things he preached before.

The mainstream media focused on Israel and anti semitism so much, they missed that he’s a communist.

Calling out Modi as the butcher of Gujrat, bold move and strong start to his career whether you agree or disagree. These are the moves we need to be making. Dar Ul Khilafah Al Hindiyyah will be following him closely @Bhaijaan @LordJames @BunnyRabbit @DeadlyVenom @Rana @Cpt. Rishwat @Bhaag Viru Bhaag @sweep_shot

Bharat will always be the land of the free people and if Rahul Gandhi can call him PM Modi the butcher of Gujrat then Zohran bhai also can use his right.

That being said we are all sons of Bhagwan Ram and Prophet Mohammad PBUH. We are fearless and we will always speak our mind out.

Zohran bhai is the pride of Sanatan and the pride of Al Hindiyyah

The real radicals are the ones arguing that billionaires should pay nothing in taxes. Calling for everyone to pay their fair share isn’t radical, and it certainly isn’t socialism. That word gets tossed around by the far right and establishment Democrats, as a scare tactic to silence legitimate demands. But let’s be honest, Americans are no longer falling for that lazy propaganda.

In the 1970s, the ultra wealthy paid tax rates as high as 70%, and the country thrived. A single income factory worker could afford a house, a car, a family vacation, and college tuition for their kids. The middle class boomed, and the United States became an economic powerhouse, created generational wealth for almost everyone from the era.

Fast forward to today, that same worker can’t even cover basic rent or groceries. And if they get sick? They might as well take a dive off the Brooklyn Bridge, because medical bankruptcy is the default.

This isn’t sustainable. Either we raise the minimum wage to a livable standard, or we start taxing billionaires like they’re part of society. Hoarding wealth while workers live paycheck to paycheck is not capitalism, it’s billionaire socialism. And ironically, it’s the exact brand of elite hoarding many immigrants left places like India to escape.

As for the fearmongering about the wealthy fleeing? Spare me. No one’s giving up their Manhattan penthouse because rent got frozen. They’re not going anywhere.

New Yorkers are waking up. The old political playbooks, whether Trump’s populism or corporate Democrat moderation, aren’t cutting it anymore. And guess what? Even being pro-Palestine isn’t political suicide like it used to be. The last few years changed the game.

So let’s get this straight, the radicals aren’t the ones demanding fairness. The radicals are the ones stuck on repeat, yelling "socialism" like it’s 1950 and facts don’t exist.

Very brave fella , the amount of hate and attacks against him by rednecks, Zionists & vegetarian extremists is huge but he’s stayed calm .

We have a Muslim mayor of London, next New York !

Do not believe it has anything to do with his religion, if it did, he wouldn’t have been elected in the first place. What got him elected were his views, which resonate with the majority of people in the city.

The real shift this time, people didn’t fall for the overused ‘antisemite’ smear. That card was played, and it flopped. Voters saw through it and chose someone whose policies actually reflect their concerns.

Yes, it's probably nothing to do with his faith but its a good sign if the two of the biggest and most famous cities in the world have mayors who are Muslim in an era of hate. It shows the voters do not discriminate unlike the politicians and media.

He has a big job to do, NY is a bit of dump compared to other major cities of the world. Maybe the voters dont want a zionist lapd*g as most US politicians are but I hope they dont expect too much from him, its a huge job.

People not voting for him because he is a Muslim are same as people voting because he is a Muslim.

He has Shia and Hindu Indian ancestry.

He is a Muslim, sect is not important. Hindu or idol worship ancestry means nothing to Muslims. Not sure why Indians want to take credit for anything linked with India esp when this chap hates the Hindu extremists ruling India.

If this man hates Extremist Hindus, he will not have Indian ancestry anymore?

Both his parents are Indians. Of course Indians will be proud of his achievements. I may not agree with his socialist ideas. But he still achieved something.

You are an atheist who believes ancestors were monkeys but means nothing now.

His identity is more African than Indian, where he was born and grew up. Africans should be more proud, Hindutvas wont be at all

Africans will be proud of him? Alright!!

His dad is a Gujarati Shia and Mother a Punjabi Hindu from India and Africans will be proud of him :vk2

What has me being an atheist got to do with any of this? You are losing your mind.

You stated his ancestry and I reminded your ancestry is a apes. If you dont care , why should he ? lol

Many people with Indian or Pakistani parents who were born in UK are British and many have never been to those lands or can even speak the language. He is an African not Indian and rightly they will be proud of him.

Everyone's ancestry going back 1 million years is an ape like creature. This includes your ancestors too. If you believe in fairytales, it is your choice. I am sure you must have studied about evolution during your education in England or you have skipped that entire chapter?

His immediate ancestors aka parents both have Indian ancestry. His dad may be born in South Africa. But he is a Gujrati. His mom is Indian born. Not sure what your problem is when Indians claim him as one of their own.

Let me tell you something. He is 100% Indian genetically.

lol What are Indian genetics, please explain? :sachin

Lets not get into evolution, if you believe your ancestors were monkeys climbing trees , this is your choice. Do you say hi when you go to a zoo? The point was Muslims do not care of their ancestors esp if they were idol worshippers.

Ones identity is not who your forefathers were but were you were born and the culture you grew up in and the nation you become an adult in.

If anything his comments against Hindutva who are now in power, seem to suggest he's ashamed of any Indian link.

Indian genetics form a cluster. They are a mix of Ancestral North Indian + Ancestral South Indian. May be you should read up a bit instead of believing in fairy tales.

Did you visit your ancestor's grave AKA Adam and Eve? Humans stopped being apes more than a million years ago. We became bipedal and several changes in anatomy happened. All of this is free to read.

I understand the identity part. But just because a pig is born and grows up in a lion's den, it's DNA does not change. It may act like a lion. But in a million or billion years when someone digs up its grave, they will call it a pig.

This whole thing is out of your depth. You stick to fairytales with magic fairies. Its a lot easier to understand that than scientifically verified and proven facts.

@KingKhanWC , a very thought out response. When you have nothing to say, this is what you can come up with. Anyways, this is a free world and people are allowed to believe anything they want. 👍

BJP MP Kangana calls NYC mayoral candidate ‘more Pakistani than Indian’

Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has targeted Zohran Mamdani, the Muslim candidate vying to become New York’s first Muslim mayor. Mamdani recently won the Democratic primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo by securing over 43% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 36%.

Kangana’s criticism came after she shared an old video of Mamdani participating in a protest against Hindus at Times Square. She tweeted that although Mamdani’s mother is a respected Indian filmmaker, his father is a Gujarati-origin writer and “he looks more Pakistani than Indian.”

She added sarcastically that Mamdani’s Hindu identity has seemingly disappeared as he appears ready to “erase Hinduism,” mocking what she called a familiar story. Her remarks followed comments from an Indian politician criticizing Mamdani for his alleged “anti-India” stance.

Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi also criticized Mamdani, saying India does not need allies like him. Singhvi remarked that “when Mamdani speaks, Pakistan’s PR team takes a break,” implying Mamdani’s statements align with Pakistan’s interests.

This controversy highlights rising tensions around Mamdani’s identity and political stance amid his historic bid to become New York’s first Muslim mayor.

These BJP sanghis need to understand Zohran is not an Indian citizen. Zohran is an American citizen.

Zohran doesn't need permission from sanghis for anything. :inti

Indians are taking over the world, one way or the other. Either through Sanatan or through Khalsa or through Sanatani Al Hindiyyah'ites or Ugandu Africans like Zohran bhai.

Its like that one glass making company (forgot the name) ruling the entire Sunglasses supply chain in the world through creating fake competition between all the brands it owns lol. By the time the world realizes all type of Indians regardless of their intense and passionate political differences are essentially the same, it would be too late to reverse.

To be honest he does look more Pakistani than Indian. I thought he was a bro from Pakistani Punjab or IOP.

Zohran Kwame Mamdani’s victory has clearly rattled the right wing, and it shows. When a progressive, principled leader of South Asian and Muslim heritage rises through a democratic process, the backlash is swift and vicious, from Islamophobic slurs to unhinged calls for deportation. Tweets like calling him “little Muhammad” and demanding his denaturalisation don’t just reveal hate, they reflect how terrified the establishment is of real change. The right isn’t attacking Zohran because he’s weak, they’re attacking him because he’s powerful and because his vision resonates with the people of New York who are tired of politics as usual.

This is the problem with India's supposed secular status. Their own ministers are pumping out the Hindu/Muslim divide at home, and now it seems they are even using overseas political figures to ramp it up.

Mamdani’s NYC primary win sparks surge in anti-Muslim posts, advocates say

Anti-Muslim online posts targeting New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani have surged since his Democratic primary upset this week, including death threats and comments comparing his candidacy to the September 11, 2001 attacks, advocates said on Friday.

There were at least 127 violent hate-related reports mentioning Mamdani or his campaign in the day after polls closed, said CAIR Action, an arm of the Council on American Islamic Relations advocacy group, which logs such incidents.

That marks a five-fold increase over a daily average of such reports tracked earlier this month, CAIR Action said in a statement.

Overall, it noted about 6,200 online posts that mentioned some form of Islamophobic slur or hostility in that day long time-frame.

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist and a 33-year-old state lawmaker, declared victory in Tuesday’s primary after former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded defeat.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor if he wins the November general election.

“We call on public officials of every party — including those whose allies are amplifying these smears — to unequivocally condemn Islamophobia,” said Basim Elkarra, executive director of CAIR Action.

The advocacy group said its hate monitoring system includes its own scraping and analysis of posts, online submissions by the public and notifications from law enforcement. About 62 per cent of the anti-Muslim posts against Mamdani originated on X, CAIR Action said.

People close to Republican President Donald Trump, including one of his sons, are among those spreading anti-Muslim rhetoric, advocates said.

Donald Trump Jr, the president’s son, wrote on X on Wednesday that “New York City has fallen” while sharing a post that said New Yorkers had “voted for” 9/11.

Also on Wednesday, Republican US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene posted an AI-generated picture of the Statue of Liberty draped in a burqa.

President Trump has pursued domestic policies that rights advocates have described as anti-Muslim, including banning travel from some predominantly Muslim or Arab countries in his first term and attempting to deport pro-Palestinian students in his current term.

The White House, which did not respond to a request for comment, has denied claims of discrimination against Muslims. Trump and his allies have said they oppose Mamdani and others due to what they call the Democrats’ “radical left” ideology.

Threats

The New York City Police Department said earlier this month its hate crime unit was probing anti-Muslim threats against Mamdani.

Manjusha Kulkarni, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, which documents hate against Asian Americans, and CAIR said attacks against Mamdani mirrored those endured by other South Asian and Muslim political figures, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

Republicans have called Mamdani antisemitic, citing his pro-Palestinian advocacy and his criticism of Israel’s military assault on Gaza after an attack by Hamas militants in October 2023.

Mamdani has condemned antisemitism and has the backing of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is Jewish. Lander also ran in the Democratic primary.

Rights advocates have noted rising antisemitism and Islamophobia since the start of the Israel-Gaza war, with fatal US incidents including the shooting of two Israeli embassy staff in Washington and the stabbing of a Muslim child in Illinois.

Mamdani and other pro-Palestinian advocates, including some Jewish groups, said their criticism of Israel is wrongly conflated with antisemitism.

Wow I had no idea his mother was Mira Nair, the woman who made the film about an Indian girl going against her family and having an affair with an African American. She made that film Mississipi Masala.

Its the divide and rule tactic. It wasn't long ago that Brahmins didn't even see most of the lower castes as Hindus until they realised they needed them to stay in power.

You Hindutuva friends are going epileptic at the possibility of his elections. Don't you guys have enough problems rather than hating on a Muslim running in NY. Truly embarrassing from the Hindutuva

Not me.
He is the pride of Dar al Khilafa al Hindiyyah as far as I am concerned

I’m not a hindutvawaadi but a proud Sanatani

NYC mayoral frontrunner Mamdani: 'I don't think we should have billionaires'

Zohran Mamdani, who is the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor after a stunning victory last week, has said no-one should have billions of dollars.

In an interview with NBC, Mamdani also stood by his proposal to tax "richer and whiter" neighborhoods, arguing the city's property tax system is unfair.

The 33-year-old defended his democratic socialism, rejecting an accusation from US President Donald Trump that he is a communist.

If elected in November, he would be the first Muslim and Indian American to lead the nation's largest city.

He ran an energetic campaign focused on affordability, promising free buses, universal childcare, a $30 minimum hourly wage, a rent freeze and city-run supermarkets - all paid for with higher taxes on the top 1% of earners.

On NBC's Meet the Press programme on Sunday, he was asked whether billionaires have a right to exist.

"I don't think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality," he replied.

New York's mayor has the power to propose a hike on property taxes, but revenue increases ultimately require approval from the state legislature and the governor.

NBC interviewer Kristen Welker asked Mamdani about a policy proposal on his campaign website to shift the tax burden "to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods".

Asked whether he might alienate key constituents by invoking race, he denied the policy was driven by race and said: "I think I'm just naming things as they are."

In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, President Trump threatened to cut off federal funding for New York City if Mamdani wins, calling him a "pure communist".

Mamdani denied being a communist, adding: "I have already to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I'm from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I am fighting for."

He said New York is "the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, and yet one in four New Yorkers are living in poverty".

Millionaires in New York pay 41% of all personal income tax, according to the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

In last week's Democratic primary, Mamdani defeated his main intraparty challenger, Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as New York governor in 2021 after sexual harassment allegations.

Mamdani has been under scrutiny for his stance on the Israel-Gaza war, after voicing strong support for Palestinians and accusing Israel of genocide, which it denies.

He was asked about these views in the NBC interview, and whether he would condemn the term "globalise the intifada".

Many Jews argue this slogan is an antisemitic call for violence, but pro-Palestinian activists say it is a call for international solidarity with Palestinians.

"That's not the language that I use," said Mamdani, adding that he condemns antisemitism. When pressed, he said it was not the role of the mayor to "police speech".

On NBC, he sought to draw a contrast between himself and the Trump administration, whom he criticised for detaining Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist at Columbia University and a lawful US resident.

Mamdani has described "globalise the intifada" in the past as "a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights".

Alhamdullilah. Mayor today, Khalifa based out of Al Hindiyyah as Dar Ul Khilafah in the future.

With Muslims like this who promote good and don’t sell out and say it like it is, unity amongst the Ummah is no longer a distant dream. The sleeping giant is about to be awakened 🌅

I pray he doesn’t sell out in the future either no matter the pressure. Ameen.

It's funny how mainstream Indians are trying to claim Mamdani as their own. Mamdani has never identified or acknowledged Indian ancestory. He promises to be a breath of fresh air for humanity and New York.

I watched a couple of interviews he did. The abuse he has recieved is very distasteful but he has kept calm, concentrating on the policies. His policies are very clear with strong arguments and details to back them up.

Coming from nothing to become Mayor of NY will go down as one of the biggest upsets in USA electoral history. It seems the youth, minorities and liberals are awaking to the corrupt politicians and want change.

Seems a good guy or a great actor, you can never trust a politician esp American but interesting times ahead with baby Trump spitting out his dummy.

?? That video seems fake due to lip sync, also Gujarat has so many Muslims, even influential ones like Pathan brothers
Nope. The one where talks about his father being from Gujarat and modi references are legit

Yes. However because he’s a politician and human I will still tread with caution and pray he doesn’t sell out and stays true to the faith.

May Allah guide him and us. Ameen.

It's hilarious to see the BJP/Modi lot disown him after he said what any sane person already knows about Modi. Eventhough he is the son of Mina Nair, one of the best directors India has produced in modern times, certain Indians want nothing to do with him now.

Refreshing to see a politician who actually stands up for what he believes in. To win the Dem primary on an openly anti-Zionist/anti-Israel agenda in New York is nothing short of remarkable. But is also indictive of the fact that the Zionist lobby's control over the American public is waning. They still control the elites, but the perception among average people is changing rapidly. What's even more amazing is the fact that Mamdani won in 4 or 5 Jewish-majority NY neighborhoods.

His ability to speak and articulate his thoughts is the best I have seen in a politician in a very long time. Not even Obama was this good. He never gives in to the obvious baiting from reporters and TV hosts and speaks very calmly and thoughtfully.

Why would Modi or any of his supporters want anything to do with this guy? He is still a nobody. He can have all his opinions. You know what they say about opinions.
