Azhar Ali at a press conference:

“We are lucky enough to have exciting fast bowlers although they are young. Naseem is just 18 while Shaheen is 20. You can’t buy experience, but they are exciting characters. We have to back them, they are bowling well and putting the opposition under pressure. You can’t gain experience by sitting outside, you have to play. At the end of last year when we were struggling for fast-bowlers, we picked them for Australia and they took up the challenge and impressed everyone. They have so much potential. Experience will come, but I think they are good enough to win Test matches for Pakistan”

“As a team and myself as captain, we are focussed at the game tomorrow which is a must-win match for us; we are looking forward to it and we played some good cricket so far in the series and want to take all the positives in the 3rd Test”

[Are you enjoying captaincy?] “Of course, I am lucky to have such a nice bunch of guys who are putting everything in for Pakistan; They have gelled nicely so they make my job easy, so I can focus on strategies etc; I am enjoying [leading them] and hopefully we can win this Test match and move forward from there”

“Conditions in England are always tought to bat in and the wickets in recent games have been bowler-friendly; So we havent seen any consistency amongst England and West Indies also; Good thing is that all our batsmen have fought it out, put on partnerships and put on enough runs; Its not easy for batsmen playing away from home to come to England and score runs in these conditions and score a century; Babar is playing really well and Abid Ali also showed it can be done in the previous game; We try as a team to score enough runs to put the other team under pressure and we have been very successful in that”

[Azhar, Asad performances, criticism on him as captain] “Our focus is on this Test match and people are free to have their own opinions; As a batsman, my focus is on my batting and its my responsibility to make sure that I score runs”

“Asad Shafiq is our match-winner and one of the best players we have got; Everyone, including the management and myself, are backing him to make runs; He has always made runs under pressure for Pakistan”

“As senior players, both Asad and I have to step up and contribute to the Pakistan batting; We will both try and do our best to help Pakistan win this Test”

[Pakistan to drop Fawad Alam after 4 balls?] “No idea how you know about such decisions - maybe you have seen them on talkshows; Covers have just been removed from the pitch so no idea how anyone can know what team will be selected; We will choose the best XI that will win the game for Pakistan”

[Boycott recently pointed out some issues with your batting] “There is always something that causes you to not score runs and this is analysed by the batsmen and the coaches too; I was feeling really good and confident about myself in the 2.5 hrs or so I spent at the crease in my previous innings and my balance was good as well”

[Are you available for white-ball cricket] “I have never said I would be available for ODIs - I do play ODs in domestic cricket as there are big gaps between Test match series; Although I have always said that whenever Pakistan team needs my help I will be ready”

[How have you motivating the team? Have they watched Ertugrul, or listened IK quote "Ghabrana naheen?"] “We are all watching Ertrugal - there is hardly any player who is not watching it”

The stats experts can verify, but I believe Asad Shafiq has only 1 MoM award in tests and that too was in a drawn game 6/7 years ago. Not quite a matchwinner.

Azhar says he “felt good” in his innings of 20 in the last Test?

An innings in which he was out THREE TIMES - the actual dismissal, plus a caught behind that wasn’t given, and when he was bowled but the bails didn’t come off!

Now I am a bit confused about the definition of match winner. I understand that as captain he wants to keep the morale of Asad high but, saying he is a match winner when there is no stat or fact to back that up is bit over the top.

Anyways, as always I am more interested in Pak doing well. I hope Asad can live upto the expectations of the captain and management. However, if he doesnt I think its time to replace him with someone in his 20s. For Pak to become a better team, they obviously need batsman who can perform under pressure and can compete in overseas conditions.

Someone should ask Azhar if he can actually remember the last time the match winner actually won a game.

Don't think 1/71 classifies you as a match winner

Is he even serious about his statement? As someone has stated, the guy has a single MOM(in a drawn match)in his test career. That is the very definition of mediocrity.

Scoring 20 made him feel good about himself? Is that the benchmark of a good innings now?

Looks like 2 MOTM awards:

In 2012 in a draw, when he scored 75 & 100 vs SL
In 2016 in a loss, when he scored 2 & (the infamous) 137

A laughable statement by Azhar. Call him an experienced batsmen, call him a good player, but to say Shafiq is a match winner is just plain stupid, and insulting to actual match-winners

Apart from Babar, Asad is easily the best batsman in the team but he lacks self belief and fails to delivery when he has the opportunity. It’s too late for Azhar and Asad to find that self belief and rise to the top. Both Azhar and Asad will end their careers being mediocre.

LoL Tell me one match which Asad Shafiq Won?
I mean Out of 76 test Matches there has to be a at least one match winning performance?

No point raising your blood pressure guys.

Shouldn't dignify this comment with a response.

Lol "match winner" is our players and ex players typical textbook saying. We have some of the most boring players in the world. They don't say anything interesting and cannot articulate themselves in their native tongue or English.

An innings in which he was out THREE TIMES - the actual dismissal, plus a caught behind that wasn’t given, and when he was bowled but the bails didn’t come off!

He didn't get out 3 times. He got out once. Why do you need to exaggerate everything about players you don't like and Misbah?

This is a intriguing point. May well be that Azhar's definition of match-winner is different from that traditional/literal meaning.

Given the culture and recent trends in Pakistan cricket - may well be that; experience = match winner

A second innings, career saving 75 in a match losing cause would be classic Shafiq.

We lose about 80% of our matches against the top half sides in spite of having match-winners in all positions.

We really do bring comic relief to international cricket.

Azhar Ali at a press conference:

“We are lucky enough to have exciting fast bowlers although they are young. Naseem is just 18 while Shaheen is 20.“

Naseem is 18 now? Did he grow up a year? I thought he was 17.

Although this statement will definitely boil our blood, but this is the only thing a captain can say.

They can't come out in public and say yeah, my X or Y player is crap.

Expectedly he will fail or score a match losing and career saving 50. But he should be dropped from the next series.

LONDON: A Turkish TV blockbuster is being used as an unlikely motivator for the Pakistan team ahead of their must-win third Test clash against England, captain Azhar Ali said on Thursday.

The 35-year-old added they were in a good state of mind despite the crushing disappointment of losing the first Test when they were in a strong position to win it.

The second Test was a virtual washout -- at the same Ageas Bowl venue where the third Test gets underway on Friday -- due to bad lght and rain.

TV series Ertugrul, which has run for five seasons (2014-19) and is a big hit in Pakistan, has proved a winner for raising morale, said Azhar.

The series, a mix of historical fiction and adventure, is based around the life of Ertugrul, the father of Osman I, who was the founder of the Ottoman Empire.

Available to stream in England, it's been a crucial diversion for a squad confined to bio-secure sites for the duration of their stay.

"Yes I think there is no player who is not watching Ertugrul," Azhar said in his eve of match press conference conducted in Urdu.
"It's tough to lift the side after losing a winning match but we have done well to lift ourselves and will do our best to level the series by winning this Test."

Later in the English section of the press conference, Azhar said what made it easier to recover from the first Test disappointment was the harmony in the dressing room.

"I'm lucky to have such a nice bunch of guys who are putting everything in for Pakistan," said Azhar.

"They have gelled really nicely, which makes the job very easy for me, so I focus on all the strategies.

"I'm enjoying it. Hopefully we can win this Test and move forward from there."

Azhar addressed his own lack of form with the bat -- he was out for a duck and 18 in the first Test.

"I was feeling really confident about myself in the two hours or so I spent at the crease in my previous innings (20) and my balance was good as well," he said.

"It is my responsibility to make sure that I score runs."

Azhar also backed young pace bowling duo Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to be a more potent attacking threat at the Ageas Bowl.

Naseem has two wickets at 49.50 with Shaheen's three coming at 45.66.

"They are exciting characters but you can't buy experience without playing. We have to back them," he said.

"We are lucky enough to have these exciting fast bowlers, although they are young. Naseem is nearly 18 and Shaheen is just 20.

"They are bowling really well, putting the opposition under pressure and we are backing them because you can't just sit outside and gain experience, you have to play."

Lol at using Ertugal as motivation. Watching Ertugal will now make Azhar Ali bat like Gilchrist

Absolutely utter rubbish! Can't believe the selectors and management see something different in Azhar and Asad. Done and dusted a long time ago! Get rid and bring in batsmen who can actually play cricket and are not so timid. What poor and weak statement that he was feeling good and Asad is a match winner. Are we all watching something different! Misbah, Azhar and Asad please move on from Cricket!

Asad Shafiq is our best player?
I worry for this team.

Also watching Ertrugul is fine but if he wants some motivation, he should start watching cricketing videos on how to bat.

Alright Azhar. Mr Match winner. Let’s see what happens in the 3rd rest. The old saying 3rd times the charm. Let’s see if you or Asad can not only score more then 35 runs but win us the 3rd test. I highly doubt it!! It’s not a rough patch for u two It’s just that your two are over the hill.

76 test matches and he has an average of 38. It’s not really good enough to be honest. As a experienced player he should also be stepping up when the going gets tough, which he singularly fails to do.
It’s a shame as technically he looks good but it’s a game of how many, not how.

We have seen Shafiqs match winning capabilities in the first 2 tests let’s hope he doesn’t ease up now and gives the English bowlers more woe in the third test.

Azhar scored a wonderful 20 of almost 15 overs he’s ready to step up and match his counterparts brilliance in the next match.

The jokes are getting worse than the quotes help.

:hafeez

When has Asad ever actually won us a match? Honest question.

At best he has been a supporting act to another dominant performance (like younis at the oval)

I can literally think of no instance where Asad has won us a game

I’m more surprised at the fact that he said they all watch Ertugrul. :)) Didn’t know it was that popular, great show!

But on topic calling Asad a match winner, is a huge stretch, cannot think of a match he has won us. The closest he’s got is that 137 against Australia, in a losing cause.

Well what’s he gonna say? I feel like I’ve lost my touch, and I’m not the same batsman I was 3 years ago? Even 4 years ago when we toured England in better batting conditions apart from that 1 hundred Azhar struggled in that series, as well. He’s never been a good player of swing bowling, and now since he’s been regressing as a batsman he was always gonna have a horrible series in England.

Azhar was a great batsman for us in Tests from 2010-2018 holding down that vital #3 spot in Tests for us. He was never the classiest player but he always grit it out, and his average of 47 during that period proved his worth. However, as is the case with most players from the subcontinent he’s overstaying his welcome, and tarnishing his own legacy.

An average of 25 since the start of 2018 with an 18 match sample size, and a progressively declining average each year displays perfectly how a Test batsman regresses with age. Not everyone is an anamoly and can play the highest of levels into their 40s and continually get better like Younis and Misbah. It’s time for Azhar to hang up the boots.

I would say this is Azhar's and Asad's final chance to be "match winners" here but as the saying goes, age is just a number :misbah4.

Is this guy a joke ? I am sad that they'll drop Fawad without giving him a chance. Give him an option to either play. himself or Asad and then see which team he goes ahead. Shadab should replace Asad

Hopefully "match winner" Asad does not make a big score in this last test. Otherwise we will be stuck with his "match winning" abilities for another year.

God.... I hope we lose now.

Looks like the fans are watching a different shafiq then

We must be in a parallel world to azhar and misbah and co

In azhar and misbahs world they are seeing him smash hundreds for fun every third game and avge 55 plus collecting mom awards every 5 games or so

Our mistake sorry

I thought Afridi was a clown back in the day, until we inherited Misbah, then went to Sarfaraz and now Azhar.

The common sense, vocabulary, understanding is in free-fall in mode in Pakistan cricket. At a time when the entire world is forward-planning.

When you make statements you cannot absolutely back up with any facts, not only does it make you like a chimp, but also makes PCB and Pakistan cricket look like idiots. How can you possibly get a meaningful conversation with any of our cricketers is beyond me. Sad.

3rd & final test
Pakistan batting in the fourth innings

Stage is all set for Asad Shafiq to score a eye pleasing 80 in the last innings and cement his place for one more year.

Then Pakistani team will celebrate in the dressing room by cutting a cake for him.

Come on Asad.....

I see Azhar has retired as cricket for last 3 years and is now got a career telling jokes.

Asad and Azhar should be kicked out of this test team asap and give chances to imam ul haq, Usman Salahuddin, Haider Ali and Shadab khan.

Enough of asads runs on dead rubbers and Azhar ali's same type of dismissal again and again.

Asad to score a career saving 50 this test match like he always does. Score useless runs..

This sort of statement is akin to the blind leading the blind.

Azhar was asked about the lack of experience in the Pakistan bowling attack by us:

“We are lucky enough to have exciting fast bowlers although they are young. Naseem is just 18 while Shaheen is 20. You can’t buy experience, but they are exciting characters. We have to back them, they are bowling well and putting the opposition under pressure. You can’t gain experience by sitting outside, you have to play. Asad was vital to Pakistan even 2 years ago. But, that has changed. Asad is now a liability and he should retire unless he plays a match winning knock soon.

The closest thing Asad Shafiq has ever got to match-winning was getting Crawley out for 267 :)))

Time for postmartum of this team( coaches and players) of failed so called legends. Waqar Younis has to b subjected to questioning. Humiliation in Aus now in Eng, we need to hv somebody with modern era.

Lol. Azhar is so high on Ertugul he doesn't even know which side is left. Probably thinks Asad is Turgut to him being Ertugul.

This sums up Pakistan Cricket for you. Their most experienced batsman poking at a delivery outside the offstump in England against Anderson. The guy still plays like a debutant. In the real professional world, you get fired if you don't start showing results

The "experienced" tag is just such a hoax to justify his selection. If I played 100 Tests, I would be very very experienced. Doesn't change the fact that I absolutely suck at batting. Same applies to Shoaib Malik. Should only be mentioning how experienced they are if they can actually bring some batting ability to the table.

Asad Shafiq only needs to hit a 35+ next innings to secure his place in the Pakistan test squad.

Azhar: Asad is our matchwinner.
Asad: I am about to end this man's whole career.
(And his own too, hopefully, while he is at it)

While Misbah is in charge and Azhar is captain, don't think he needs to do anything really.

Todays inns should be Asads last as a test player, truely pathetic test career should come to an end.

Am sure asad will still get misbahs backing sadly

We’re yet to play the second innings so this won’t be his last time battting for Pakistan no matter how much we want it:yk
