Pakistan’s former captain, coach and second-highest Test run-scorer explains to Saj (for isport) why the current skipper is in desperate need of a helping hand.

Pakistan legend Javed Miandad says the team’s coaches “need to earn their salaries” to help the struggling tourists out of their slump.

For the country’s second-highest Test run-scorer, Pakistan’s struggling duo of Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq are in desperate need of a helping hand.

“Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq have received criticism for their recent performances, but it’s too soon to drop them,” he said.

“The Pakistan coaching staff need to earn their salaries and work on restoring Azhar and Asad’s confidence and I’m sure better results will follow for both players.”

Azhar’s tactics during the Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes run-chase in the first-Test defeat to England at Old Trafford were heavily criticised. Azhar’s appointment points to a flawed selection process when it comes to choosing Pakistani captains, Miandad says.

“Azhar Ali has been given the captaincy due to a lack of other candidates which isn’t the right way to go about this,” he said.

”The problem is that in Pakistan, captaincy seems to be given to individuals based upon whim and leaders are never groomed as they are in England. The result is that a Pakistan captain learns on the job instead of using his knowledge and experience, which is totally incorrect and people who have poor leadership skills are elevated into this role.

“Our domestic system used to produce good captains but the way the new changes are going, this will become much more difficult to achieve.”

The constant interruptions due to bad light in the second Test was not the greatest advertisement for Test cricket and former Pakistan skipper Miandad says that versatility and a fresh approach is needed by the International Cricket Council to remedy this recurring problem.

“The ICC needs to show some creativity and adopt a modern approach by adjusting the hours of play, instead of this rigid approach,” Miandad said. “The priorities and requirements of cricketing audiences around the world are changing and the ICC needs to take this into account before more fans are disheartened and stop watching cricket.

“There has to be versatility in the playing conditions and playing hours and I suggest that play should start earlier in some countries or finish later where possible, according to the climate.

“I see no sense in a fixed 11am to 6pm day in England when play could even start at 10am. Those that run the game really need to start thinking out of the box regarding playing conditions, the use of pink cricket balls, the quality of floodlights, as well as drainage and playing area covers and facilities at grounds, before cricket becomes an even bigger laughing stock.”

Joe Root’s leadership skills in the ongoing series against Pakistan have had mixed reviews, but Miandad, who captained Pakistan in 34 Tests, is a big admirer of the 29-year-old Yorkshireman.

“England has regularly produced captains who have been well-groomed to do the job and this is a lesson for other nations as well,” he said. “There is something special about Root and I find his attention to detail similar to that of Sir Geoffrey Boycott.

“During my playing days with Glamorgan we had a game against Yorkshire and Boycott was dismissed early. He immediately walked over to the nets and started batting again for hours because he felt he hadn’t batted long enough and needed more practice.

“He was so dedicated and I see the same traits in Root. England are fortunate to have a captain like Joe Root.”

England have lost the services of Ben Stokes, due to personal reasons, but not before his performance with the ball in the first Test against Pakistan helped turn the tide in his side’s favour. Time and again he has performed heroics and Miandad feels that Stokes is the envy of other sides.

“Any country would want a player like Ben Stokes. You can put him at any position with the bat and he delivers. Give him the ball at any point and he will rattle the opposition. There aren’t many players currently who have this capability and Stokes really is a complete cricketer. He has energy, determination and aggression and quite rightly is regarded as an elite cricketer.”

Despite their struggles, Miandad thinks this Pakistan side have the ability to take the fight to England and level the series.

“Pakistan must not feel that they are out of this series,” he said. “They made some mistakes in the first Test and lost from a winning position.

“But, as long as the Pakistani batsmen can learn from their mistakes and put up fighting totals, this Pakistan bowling attack has the edge over England’s batsmen, so don’t be surprised if this series finishes 1-1.”

Azhqr and Asad have been struggling for 3 years. Azhar averages 11 outside Asia since the retirements of Younis and Misbah. How many more series should we lose before these sainted seniors are held accountable ?

“Our domestic system used to produce good captains but the way the new changes are going, this will become much more difficult to achieve.”
How many top captains did our previous domestic system produce in the last 20 years ? In the old system captains were generally appointed simply because they were the seniormost player, not on merit.

With 6 teams, there's much more scrutiny now on a captain's performance.

This guy when it comes to talking. Lol
Azhar Asad’s confidence, only if they keep playing them Pak continue to lose and these ppl have a job to rant in the media about every single lost game.

Keeps on backing the old system and discredit the new system of 6 teams

They just need dropping. No one has confidence in them because they keep letting the team down.

Why should a guy who averages 11 outside Asia FOR THREE YEARS have his confidence restored?

He has no right to be confident!

Even if Azhar and Asad had a confidence problem - the National Team is no place for someone/anyone to get their confidence back.

Go back to the nets or domestic and get your confidence, for the National Team we need the players who are at the peak of their powers, in epic form and piling on the runs.

What is he a child, he is the captain and can't be dropped. So what more confidence does he need. Why can't one of ex players call these awful older players out for being rubbish.

Confidence is a highly misunderstood concept.

True confidence comes from competence.

If you are skilled in something you will automatically generate confidence over time due to the good results you experience when applying those skills.

Some motivational speech and pep talk here and there might pump you up for a while but it will be short lived.

Would you ever feel nervous explaining 2 + 2 to a room full of kids?

How about explaining calculus?

These two lack confidence because they lack the skills necessary for this level.

Lol as if the coaches have some kind of magic wand. Both peaked during MisYou days and both have reached the end of the line. If anything they should be phased out because they are done.

No wonder you failed in your multiple stints as Pakistan Head Coach.

Pretty rich from Miandad to talk about someone earning their salary, besharam much

These players have played 70 plus test matches and they still need confidence. You work for an organization for 1-2 years, initially they will give you a lenient learning curve but if you don't deliver over the time period, they lose confidence in you and send you packing. Why should it be any different with our cricket team?

I think Azhar and Asad should get to play some test matches at home. They have served Pakistan cricket for a decade while barely getting a chance to play infront of home crowds. They deserve that much. However, slowly they need to be phased out.

They dont have an inherent right to a place in the team and pakistan cricket owes them nothing

You perform you stay in the team You dont, you get dropped

Its unfair on others in the wings having to sit out year after year for these two non performers

This. Confidence comes from competence. Azhar & Asad arent competent enough to be confident players.

Dont get this deserve this deserve that part. If you're not good enough, You should be left out. Steve Waugh the captain of all conquering australian side was dropped from ODIs just one year before the worldcup. He also had to score a career saving scg ton at ashes 02/03 where his side actually won the ashes 4-1. That's how professional sports should be. You always have to prove yourself that you belong & you're good enough.
P.S. Dhoni would still have been the captain & playing if he was Pakistani.

Coaches can not perform miracles. Azhar has average ability and always did. Now at his age it is near impossible to turn him in to a world beater. Few days back Miandad was ranting at IK and now he has put his foot in his mouth again. Time for him to snap out off it and get a proper job preferably outside the game. Put all those school and college qualifications to use now:kakmal

They've given enough to get the chance to play a few tests at home. I don't see anything wrong with that. If they can roll out the carpet for Inzamam just so he could pass Miandad's record they can do the same for these guys.

I agree with him on Root. I am very impressed with his captaincy. Unfortunately, it is costing him at a personal level.

Spot on about the way Pakistani skippers are selected. There seems to be no method to this madness.

It's a case of who's the most senior player, he will do as captain.

Azhar's problem isn't confidence, it's his reflexes and inability to play inswing. Can't restore that at the official age of 35

Azhar was always a limited mediocre player. His lack of quality is catching up with him.

The problem though is deeper than that.

There are two types of decent captain.

Type 1: The smart, diplomatic thinker
This is the role that Misbah filled and that Shan Masood could do. Overseas think of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook

The guy needs to be smart, educated and fluent in English. Training hard helps, especially if like Misbah and Shan he isn't a particularly talented cricketer.

You won't get any scandals, and the sort of racist disgrace that Sarfraz Ahmed created in South Africa won't happen. But you will lose a lot of games too, because these guys are fairly defensive safety-first captains who tend to travel badly.

Type 2 - The aggressive, positive leader
This is a completely different type of captain - it's a leader.

The player is proactive and positive, and usually has no fear.

Successful examples include Shane Warne and Brendan McCullum. Unsuccessful ones include Ken Rutherford and Mike Gatting, who got sacked 16 months after winning an away Ashes series and 6 months after reaching a World Cup Final.

The lack of fear and relative lack of education means that these guys don't kowtow to tradition and seniority. If they see a dead weight in the team - underperforming senior players for example - they simply discard them.

McCullum could do this because in Mike Hesson he had a weak, passive coach who let him run the team. But this only works if the captain is given power and authority and allowed to dicard the failing seniors.

The obvious Pakistani here is Shadab Khan. We have seen 18 months of the senior players briefing the media against him because they know that with him in power there would be no place for Azhar, Shafiq, Hafeez or Shoaib.

In the First Innings of the First Test, it was Shadab who took control as the innings was capsizing, and it was extraordinary that he was the senior partner in the partnership with Shan Masood. The guy with leadership skills led the guy who is the born diplomat.

But I don't think that Pakistan culture, with this "bhai" concept, lends itself to the strongest leader being given the leadership.

I think Misbah wants a puppet who will let him lead, just as Darren Lehmann loved having Steve Smith who wasn't very smart and wanted to be left to think about his own batting.
