Standard Bank Proteas fast bowler, Wayne Parnell, has credited his ability to ‘stay in the moment’ for his turnaround bowling spell in the opening ICC Champions Trophy match against Sri Lanka at The Oval on Saturday. Parnell came under fire in his opening spell going for 45 runs in five overs, but pulled it back impressively to go for nine runs in his last five overs.

The Proteas are in Birmingham preparing for their second Group B match against Pakistan at Edgbaston on Wednesday, and will need more of the same temperament against an ‘unpredictable’ unit.

“It was about staying in the moment and staying in the game,” Parnell said in Birmingham on Monday. “I had 10 overs to complete and the first five overs didn’t go according to plan. It was discussed before the match as well as having specific plans but on the day, he (Dickwella) got away. I had a lot of success against him in South Africa but on the day it can happen. When AB called on me for the last five overs it was about doing what was needed at that particular time and I managed to execute it.

“They are a very unpredictable team,” he said of Pakistan. “For us it’s about focusing on what we do well instead of trying to focus on what they did or didn’t do well yesterday. It’s about sticking to the South African brand of cricket.”

The left-arm seamer has become an integral part of the Proteas’ arsenal with the ball, and although he can be expensive at times, he boasts the best strike-rate of the pacemen (26.8) over the last year. Clear role definition and an understanding of the expectations in an all-rounder heavy attack has helped the 27-year-old bring out the best of his game when needed.

“Over the last 12 months I sat down with Russell (Domingo) and tried to figure out a way that I could play more consistently in this one-day outfit,” Parnell said. “Consistency was one thing that was mentioned. For me over the last two years I’ve been on an upward curve implementing things that I have been putting into practice every day. It has been successful often, I have to try and continue on the upward curve.

“We are at a stage where everyone is comfortable with playing and sitting out at various times,” he said of the team dynamic. “We have developed a culture of playing ‘horses-for-courses’ so it’s about what is needed for the next venue rather than player performances. We have seen guys who have come in and done well being left out and the other way around.”

Need a repeat of the 2015 World Cup. The usual suspects in SA will have to wilt under pressure again.

That will only prolong Azhar, Hafeez, Shehzad and other usual suspects ODI careers. Knowing Inzi if Pakistan somehow reaches the semis by hook or by crook we won't have any changes in the ODI squad.

Unpredictable pfft. Gone are those days. Now we are predictably poor.

Dont we say the same freaking thing in every tournament? :)) nothing ever changes irrespective of the results.

There is nothing unpredictable about this team. Losing to top teams has become very predictable and very muvh expected.

I don't know why don't kill me I have a feeling Pakistan will clean up South Africa for 56 I had a dream about it not once but two times consistently in my dream Pakistan make 82 then they come to bowl and clean the South Africans up.
Do you think I need to visit the doctor?

We're not winning with hafeez, shehzad and azhar. They have to be kicked out. fahim, haris, and fakhar should replace them.

Pak making 82 is possible. SA may be making 56-0 in 10 overs.

Bhai you and I both know they will never make this many changes. Mickey doesn't have the guts to throw out seniors.

We're quite predictable nowadays.SA will have to do extraordinarily bad to lose against this mediocre team.

Never happens in pak cricket. I will be surprised even now if junaid will be selected ahead of fahim in place of wahab. Because the mgmt is that clueless. Moreover if they select fakhar haris fahim instead of shehzad hafeez and wahab and if they lose against SA then it will be reprieve for hafeez shehzad and wahab.

Definitely... You can get free mental medical treatment at Cape Town's famous Valkenberg Mental Hospital :)

Umar Akmal has a greater chance of shedding 2 kgs than Pakistan beating the Proteas :)

Unpredictability is not a good thing
This is the problem with us pakistanis. They take this as a compliment, i saw how sarfraz was aaying his team is unpredictable

Being unpredictable means that you are likely to lose but could wina game out of the blue. This is actually really pathetic

Pak can win this.

Make SA bat first, pack your team with spinners. Imad/Shadab/Yasir.

Bundle SA for under 200.

Back yourself to chase it.

Yasir is not even in the squad plus he's supposed to be playing County on Thursday.

Oh man even in your dreams, the Pakistani batting was crap. That's how poor we are.

Pak your team with 4 spinners and Amir.

Your pacers will get destroyed by Amla/DeCock/ABD/Faf.

SA are not good players of spin. This is Pak's only hope of winning.

He's right. It's hard to predict what side will turn up: the bad side or the unbelievably horrible one, or maybe the 20-3 in 10 overs one?

Play spinners with no spin on offer. Seems legit :danish

SA are a much better Team.

Waheed is just belong cautious and diplomatic.

Do you think I need to visit the doctor?

You, need to visit Doctor, TWO TIMES.

One for dreaming, Pakistan to be folded for 82, then for dreaming, South Africa to be bundled for 56.

:)) and third time for believing this dream will come true

Parnell isn't wrong.

We truly are unpredictable at inventing ways on how to lose.

Au contraire, Pakistan are very predictable, they are the most predictable team in the tournament.

Why do I feel like, now a days it isn't a compliment anymore.

It means, pak is expected to lose. But since unpredictable, they can win.

Doesn't sound like a compliment or am I reading it too much?

Didn't Kholi say something similar?

Are all these cricketers given same booklet about the diplomatic answers?

I agree with Parnell

One day Pakistan will be all out for 43 and on another day they can score a massive score of 240

Not gonna lie to you, that loss against India made me forget that we had a match against SA tomorrow. Anywho I'm predicting a loss against SA but a win against SL.
