“This is an opportunity for me to leave a legacy behind, next 4-5 years are important” : Azhar Ali

"First of all it is a matter of honour that I have been asked to lead Pakistan in the best format of cricket"

"This is an opportunity for me to leave a legacy behind me and the next 4-5 years are very important for me as a player and a captain"

"Its my hope to leave a good legacy with my performance and character""In terms of challenges, the WTC is important and like a World Cup for Test cricket and its a great opportunity for players who will take part in it"

"We are number 7 ranked in Tests and have to move up a lot and most of the sides we will play against in WTC will be above us in rankings - these are tough challenges but a great opportunity for us to play positive and fearless cricket"

"I would like to thank Sarfaraz Ahmed in the way he lead the side - his services for Pakistan are excellent"

"I spoke to Sarfaraz Ahmed earlier after the announcement and my complete support is for him"

"People comment a lot about many things but I believe that time teaches you a lot and its also sometimes easy for others to comment sitting outside that I am a defensive captain but it really depends on the team's combination and that drives the way you captain the side"

"I am better prepared now to take on the captaincy, I captained the ODI side earlier and now you will see a different captain this time and time teaches you a lot; I have played against big teams, have played county cricket and also played a lot of FC cricket; I am 34 now and I have played a lot of cricket and Inshallah you will see a lot of changes"

"I was told about this change yesterday but seems that all of you (press) had prepared me well"

"A lot of stuff was being said in the news and this had been building up for a while and I had taken the advice of my elders and senior players on this issue to know what to do when such a situation arises"

"So it wasnt difficult for me when I was told yesterday and I took it as a great opportunity"

"Winning is important for a team and its captain but apart from that my target would be to develop players for Pakistan who can serve the country for a long time"

"The idea is to transfer my experience and prepare players to play fearless and positive cricket and how to cope with different challenges"

"Winning is important but to build the right culture in the team is my top priority"

"I have always prioritized Test cricket myself as its the best format of the game in which players best skills are shown "

"It will be my aim to make sure that our players prioritize Test cricket and to focus more on red-ball cricket as white-ball cricket will take care of itself"

"There is need to develop a team culture in which we take better decisions under pressure"

"and to empower players such that when faced with such conditions, they can take the right decisions"

"Obviously Amir and Wahab are very good bowlers but they are not available to us, so the WTC, tour of Australia are opportunities where we can bring in new players and its also the case that unless the new players come in, we dont know about their capabilities"

"its a great opportunity that youngsters will come in and perform and so it could be an exciting time for Pakistan"

"The first thing I asked when I was told about this position was about the length of this assignment and I can say that from the PCB and the Chairman I have full support that this is not a short-term thing so this is why I have accepted the position"

"Sometimes when good results are not coming then change can be good and it doesnt mean you have given up"

"I have played cricket with Misbah Bhai for about 8 years and so we have a good understanding and I have been told by Misbah Bhai and Chairman that my input will be important"

"It used to be the case that if you wanted to demand something (player selection) from the Chairman Selectors, you needed to go through the Head Coach and then if the selectors didnt agree then you would struggle"

"Now as Chief Selector and Head Coach are same, it will be easier and he will have a better idea of the problems that the captain is facing"

"Our track record in Australia is not very good, but I feel that when a new setup or new players come in, they play a little fearlessly"

"You cannot defeat Australia without playing positive cricket"

"My message to players would be to play aggressive cricket and although our track-record in Australia is not good, but this an opportunity for us; Until and if we dont start winning outside our comfort zone which are Asian conditions, we will not be able to move up in the rankings"

"Its important to win in home conditions but to win on away tours is equally important"

"As a captain, I will bat a position wherever it benefits the team and where I can contribute the most"

"There is no easy side in the WTC and playing against Australia in Australia is not easy. This is the same situation when I took over as ODI Captain - we were 7th in ODIs and now we are 7th in Tests - I feel that ALLAH gives you an opportunity so I am going to take this in a positive way so that at this stage in my career, I can transfer my experience to youngsters and to set an example such that a legacy is left which will be remembered forever"

"I hope when new players come in they will put in their best efforts and will not have pressure or burden on them and Inshallah against Australia we will try and play aggressive and positive cricket and it will be my effort to make sure that fear of failure is not present in any player"

"You will see some new face in bowling also Abbas is fit and Yasir Shah has also performed really well for Pakistan in the past"

"This will be an exciting time for me as I will get to see new fast-bowlers in the line-up; No Cricket game or team is easy but it will be great when the young talent is transferred into performances"

"There is a fast-bowler's camp starting here tomorrow and I will there tomorrow also"

"Sarfaraz Ahmed has many services for Pakistan and he had a big contribution when Pakistan reached number one in Tests"

"Sometimes a players form can take a dip and they need a time off and I have no doubts over Sarfaraz Ahmed's abilities and he would be my number on choice but the selection committee and I feel that he can recover with a bit of off-time"

"Ability wise Sarfaraz Ahmed is number one and we will discuss soon how to take this further, his future is always bright, he's a tremendous character and a fighter"

"I am sure that whatever happens in the near future, he is a strong man and he will come back Inshallah"

"I will accept responsibility for our performances in Australia; Whenever the team wins or loses the responsibility should be on people who are in the positions of power; if you recall we won a match in Leeds in 2010 against Australia so you cannot say before the side goes that we will not be able to compete there"

"Yes, experience matters but on the day you have to perform and it will be our effort to perform as well as we can and we will be there to take responsibility if the side loses, God Forbid"

Some very good comments and is showing a great attitude towards the role by thinking and planning like a captain from today itself.

Next 4 to 5 years are very improtant for me as player and captain.. Goshhh... He wants to continue playing for another 5 years .. Unbelievable!

The only legacy hes gonna leave if of loses.. 5 years lol he must be out of his mind.

I dont see him playing more then 2 years

4-5 years??
Seriously??Azhar will be shown the mirror after the probable debacle in Australia.

unfortunately good comments and attitude don't equate to on field performance

He didn't deserve to be in the team on merit.

They should not have made him captain. Asad Shafiq should have been given an opportunity. He deserves it.

Asad Shafiq has a test average of 38 and as poor last 2 seasons as Azhar. I agree that Asad has a decent cricketing mind for tests but his spot is more in jeopardy if it is than Azhar.

No. You are wrong.

Last 2 years (11 matches, 20/21 innings):

Asad Shafiq: 35 @54 SR
Azhar Ali: 25 @39 SR

Not to mention that Shafiq averaged 30+ in the last series vs SA while Azhar averaged 9.

In the Last two years the batting average strokeless wonder ais lesss than Shafiq. And its about difference of ten runs per innings.

And he has been made captain . Such atragedy, surely it has been on Misbah recomendations.

Misbah keeping the seniority culture alive. Forget performance or current form.

I actually think he’ll make a good Test captain but he needs to get his form back with the bat. Looked finished at the highest level last series.

I never said Azhar and him exactly had the same average and stats rather he also had as poor seasons and impact wise it was as poor as he couldnt do anything of note. An avg of 35 as a senior post Younus and Misbah in last two years and with a career average of 38 at 32 years of age after playing so many tests isnt good enough.

Azhar's good years were much better than Asad that is why he has still got an average of almost 44 with Hs of 302 and guy has got 15 test 100s including a double 100 in Aus.

Anyways I am pretty sure people who are criticizing now would have criticized even if Shafiq would have been made captain.

As for some problem isnt the decisions, its the man taking them.

It will be good if he fill this gap but lols like he will not score many in Aus . And you will see another painful end. Shafiq still has 4 years left in him, Azhar on other hand is finished.

Senior or the 2nd most senior member is the captain of all the top 5 test playing nations (With exception of Paine because of the ball tempering saga otherwise it was Smith before that) and that is because experience does matter in this role.

As I have said, In the last 3 decades there isnt an example of a successful young captain in tests U-25 along with less than 25 tests except Greame Smith.

You can't compare Azhar and Asad's averages though. The former has batted 100% of his matches in the Top 3, while Asad was given a few matches in the Top 4, but he's been at #5/6 for 90% of his games.

I am criticizing the decision because it is the wrong one. Misbah wanted Azhar as a non-performing ODI captain. Now he wants him as a non-performing Test captain.

Misbah made a good decision sacking Sarfraz, and making Babar the T20I captain. But making Azhar Ali the Test captain is 100% the wrong decision.

I agree as obviously if he doesnt perform in Aus and especially against Srl as a batsman as well as captain than its likely that his position will be under pressure.

Disappointed with this appointment and Azhar’s plan to play for Pakistan for another 4-5 years.

It’s becoming harder and harder to be a Pakistan team fan these days.

And I completely respect your opinion.

On a side note: Asad was given chances at no 4 in tests post Misbah and Younus against Srl and he scored 39,20 and 12 in 3 innings and he was moved to no 5 in the last innings and he scored a century, so looks like he is more comfortable and no 5 and 6.

Unfortunately Azhar Ali is staying in the team. I was hoping that Babar would move up to #3, but I guess not.

Azhar Ali obviously does not like opening, and at 35 it is a recipe for disaster for him to face the new ball. #3 is an important role for the team, so let's see if he can do it while captaining. This is his biggest challenge as a Pakistan player, and he is past his prime.

Asad is a good player for #5. He is the best player of spin in Pakistan and playing at this position will allow him to play for next 4-5 years. He can do the same role that Misbah did, but he needs to become more consistent, and score at a 45-50 average instead of 35-40.

Haris has a good record and he slots in at #4. Babar is doing a great job at #6, similar to what Asad did under Misbah, he did bat at #3 during the last Aus. tour and struggled. So I would keep him at 6.

The batting seems fine, but I am worried about the bowling. Apart from Shaheen, I don't see any of Pak's bowlers doing a good job in Aus.

The likes of Shan, Azhar and Haris will have to get big hundreds to keep up with Steve Smith and Australia.

I agree that its time for Babar to get back to no 3 in tests. In my opinion we can probably go with couple of decent combinations for Aus:

Shan/ Imam
Azhar
Babar
Fawad
Haris
Asad/ Or an all rounder maybe in Yamin
Rizwan/ Sarfaraz

Or

Shan/ Imam
Abid
Babar
Azhar
Haris
Asad/ Or an all rounder maybe in Yamin
Rizwan/ Sarfaraz

1. Support Dumping Sarfraz Ahmed. It's time for Rizwan to take over.
2. Disagree with appointing Azhar. Nevertheless, good comments by him.

4/5 years?!

He doesnt even deserve to be in the team but they made him Captain! He will get exposed big time.

It was high time to move on from him and timid asad shafiq.

Give him a chance at least.

He has the chance.PCB has granted him that.
However his vision of occupying a place in the team for another 5 years,as the captain no less is alarming to say the least.
He is barely getting by and his appointment is more due to lack of alternatives than his own exceptional abilites and he needs to be clear on that himself rather than already planning to stick to the team like a leech till he is 40.

Some decent comments but I don't like the talk of being captain for 4/5 years. He is on the decline now , imagine how he will be in 4/5 years!!!!

We just need Babar to settle in tests. Than he will take over.

AA needs to score runs, if in the loss he comes out OK, he will get another series, if he struggles and the team lose then he is toast, unless Babar also has a nightmare.

We're screwed. I've pretty much quit watching Pakistan cricket.

Misbah and Waqar strike again.

The most clueless duo in history of Pakistani cricket.

I have already almost stopped following our cricket since tuk tuk and clueless became our coaches and will just follow it now to see how Haris, Babar and Abid does.

So what he’s the captain? I think he was the most qualified out of the 11 to be captain. Give him a chance. This will be good in the long run. I don’t get why people are so negative about anything Pakistan cricket related news. Relax..

It's not Azhar's fault he's the chosen one for Waqar and Misbah. No surprise they've brought him back. Giving him test captaincy does make sense...let's see if he can execute the Misbah and Waqar show on the field.

He looked really out of sorts against Olivier. Cummins will try to rough him up.
If he wants to understand why Pakistan doesnt have the mentality to win in Australia, he should look at Misbah's captaincy in the Melbourne test.
Anyway I wish him well.

Just like Sarfaraz got booted out? :))

Won an international tournament something beghairat Misbah cannot manage in a million years. :shh

For any captain to have Australian tour as their first series is a daunting task, if Azhar is to even draw this series it will earn him a lot of recognition.

With Babar Azam, Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali the batting does seem at least on paper decent however it all comes down to how they handle the barrage of short pitch bowling that will be gifted to them when they come out to bat in tests.

The real concern here after the retirement of Amir and wahab who have decent experience bowling in those conditions will we have the bowlers who could take 10 wickets in each innings? Abbas is a great bowler who is suited for English like conditions where the ball tends to get swing in the air however Australian conditions require aggressive fast paced bowling to exploit the bouncy pitches. Also, Yasir Shahs record in Australia is abysmal to say the least so our strength in test which is spin tends to get neutralized in those conditions. Also, when the pressure is on will our fielder's be able to not drop any catches. We have many times lost in Australia due to our horrible fielding even when our batting and bowling had clicked.

He might actually be the first captain to leave us with the most whitewashes. The legacy of whitewashes are on the cards here.

Pakistan has to be the only team in the world who prepares in the same pathetic manner every Australian tour and wonders why they are whitewashed :yk

Expect another barrage of phaintas from Aussies!

Indians were lucky, no Warner/Smith. Pak will suffer the full wrath!

I would say Pakistan is lucky that Smith and Warner are there. At least they can say they didn’t lose to a weak side.

Azhar is a limited player with limited range of shots. But one thing that he impresses me most that he knows and remembers his limitation the most and always plays accordingly. There were many more gifted Pakistani batsmen who couldn't built a long career for Pakistan, Azher did.in captaincy also I think he will have a same approach and be defensive like Misbah. He will do an okays job as captain as he did as a batsman and will hung around for 3-4 more years.

Azhar is a bad choice as captain. His batting has deteriorated to alarming levels and not sure if he's capable tactically as well.

If you had to go with a senior guy, I'd rather have Asad Shafiq as captain than Azhar Ali. He's much better as a captain and will be 10x more aggressive in his approach than Azhar.

Mickey Arthur on TV:

"Azhar Ali is one of the nicest men I know, he's a fantastic human being with great values, just a solid nice guy and people follow him for those character traits. He's not demonstrative or forceful but he has a steel when he gets out there onto the ground but he doesn't take that off the field. I hope he goes well as Test captain"

Sums up our cricket where players are praised and captains are appointed on the basis of being nice men

The legacy of being the most dull and uninspiring cricketer to play so many Tests for Pakistan.

Azhar can never be the man to lead you to a series or even a test match win in either Australia or South Africa. You look at the likes of Sangakkara or Kohli, who have the character to inspire their teams to compete in Australia. Then you look at Azhar, and you realize he was never right man for the job.

We made a player who is completely finished as a batsmen at the highest level captain. He shouldn’t even be in the team.

This is Azhar Ali’s legacy.

A selfish cricketer who damaged his team by not retiring when age had robbed him of his batting powers.

A man whose lust for the glory of the national captaincy made him make a fool of himself in South Africa and now Australia.

It’s very rare to see a Pakistani player retire at 33/34. I wouldn’t call him selfish because after the precedent Misbah has set everyone thinks they can play as long as they want. The problem is with the selectors who keep picking players and making them captain in this case when they shouldn’t even be in the side.

Cook and Smith, two far greater Test cricketers than Azhar, retired at 33.

While we made Azhar captain at 34. Our cricket culture is rotten to the core.

This! Just doesn’t make sense at all and if the Director came from the ECB than he knows this should have told Misbah

Azhar is officially 34 years and 10 months old.

He has played 15 Tests since his 33rd birthday.

And he averages 27.59 since that time.

He’s finished.

Was always gonna end in tears. You saw how disasterous his ODI captaincy tenure was so why expect anything different in Tests ?

Misbah has set an awful example by playing till 42. Now everyone thinks they can do it in our country even without performance.

In fairness he should have said that my proxy captain Misbah wants to leave a legacy here

Pretty horrific start to his legacy building....but one remains hopeful.

So he thinks he will Captain for the next 4-5 years. :))

His legacy will always be the NZ test match that he comically lost with the tailenders.

Yeah no one was going to remember him, and now after his captaincy stint people will just call him horrible names.

Misbah and waqar have ruined whatever little respect this guy had garnered after his odi stint and now that will be gone too.

Azhar shouldve said no. But its clear as day azhar only cares about himself and not the team.

He shouldve been dropped along side asad. This was suppose to be a new clean start, looks far from it.
