Cheteshwar Pujara said India’s bowling unit was confident and well prepared for their challenging tour of South Africa.

The Indian pace attack, comprising Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, is bolstered by Hardik Pandya, the allrounder, and backed by the spin duo of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, making it one of the most balanced to have toured the African nation.

Pujara reckoned India’s fast bowlers are a lot quicker than the ones who toured South Africa in the past. “Our fast bowling is much better this time,” Pujara told reporters on Tuesday (January 2) ahead of the first Test in Cape Town. “They are quick, so I think we have that advantage this time.

“Our bowling coach has been talking to them. Good thing is that our fast bowlers have bowled well even in Indian conditions when there’s not so much help for them. I can mention the Australia series — our fast bowlers picked up so many wickets although the surface was flat. They’ll have a lot of assistance here, so obviously they’ll have their game plans. I can’t comment on what lines and lengths they’re preparing for. But overall, our bowling unit is very strong this time.”

India have won just two Tests in 17 attempts in South Africa since 1992, with their batsmen struggling with the pace, bounce and movement that South African pitches enable.

However, the current Indian side under Virat Kohli has been on a high, having remained unbeaten over a stretch of nine Test series — a record shared with Australia. According to Pujara, the nature of the surfaces was not a concern for the visitors.

“We are not bothered about the type of pitch that they prepare,” he said. “We’ll just try and focus on our own processes. We have a clear game plan whether it is a flat wicket or if there is some grass on it … we are prepared. We would just like to stay focused on the things that we want to achieve as a team.”

Among all Test nations he’s played against, Pujara averages the least against South Africa, at 39.46. But, this time, the team was both technically and mentally better equipped, thanks to their experience from previous tours in the country, he said.

“The good thing is most of our players have been here before. I’ve been here in 2010-11 and 2013-14, so it’s just about knowing your game, knowing the conditions and then applying yourselves.”

Having opted against a two-day warm-up game, the Indian team arranged two practice sessions on Saturday and experimented with different simulations, preparing the surface according to the conditions they desired. Keeping the South African conditions in mind, the team even had a pace-friendly strip in the first Test against Sri Lanka in November.

Pujara emphasised that India were not short of preparation, despite not having enough time between the two series.

“Our team is confident with the three net sessions we’ve had so far. Before we came here, when were playing Sri Lanka series, we spoke about how we want to go about this series. Obviously, we are here to win the series.

“There was some movement and bounce in Kolkata. It was still different from what we may get here, but we tried to replicate what we could. Even in other matches, and whenever we hit the nets, South Africa tour was on our mind.”

Should India win the three-Test series against South Africa, it will be their tenth on the trot — an all-time record. However, Pujara stressed how the team never chased records. “When you start winning, records come automatically. We have never spoken about records. We have that opportunity to be a great side, if we do well here, in England and Australia.

“We have that experience and [are] a team which can dominate overseas. If we do that, this will be one of the best Indian teams.”

Man's said it and now he must stand by it.

We may well get whitewashed in SA afterall, but, unarguably this is perhaps the strongest Indian lineup ever to visit South Africa.

Vijay
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pandya
Saha
Jadeja
Yadav/Bhuvi
Shami
Bumrah

but India ready to dominate overseas?

Are India ready to dominate? I am not sure, will Kohli continue to dominate overseas.... absolutely. If India want to dominate then there players will need to step up. They can't just rely on Kohli, they need other players to stand up.

but India ready to dominate overseas?

Currently, no team is capable of dominating overseas. They may win test or two here and there. Only exception is Aus /SA in each others backyard.

But As far as India is concerned, I we don't win this time, we will perhaps never beat SA in SA ever.

Not the best batting line up to tour SA. But the best bowling line up to tour SA.

Middle order is weak. Rahane is out of form and Saha does not inspire any confidence.

Rahane (usually) saves his best for overseas.

Indian middle order will do fine as long as top order doesn't fall to new ball IMO. But then, same can be said about any team :yk

Looking forward to Pujara's performance.

What's the mood in India atm? Are people hopeful or is this not of interest?

For India to win a test, it has to win 9-10 sessions out of maximum 15. That is a tough ask for any team abroad.

All this talk is fine. Now it is time to walk the talk!

A few differences between now and previous teams

1. SAid it before, saying it again. Only difference between this team and any previously touring teams is fitness. Fast bowlers are fitter and stronger to bowl long spells and capable of taking early wickets, which may ensure Ashwin doesnt come in at 1/100 and get plastered all over. He can then bowl attacking lines.

2. Kohli is not (at least so far) as defensive as Dhoni when it comes to captaincy in tests.

3. Batsmen are also fitter and quick runners between wickets, so good chance of keeping the score ticking.

4. Slip catching is probably the worst ive seen in recent times. Dhoni had a great team of slippers

5. Ishant Sharma seems to have found some rhythm and is able to land the ball on seam at decent length.

Other than that, India need a lot of luck to survive!

I thought the Indians usually refrain from making such statements before a Test Match !!!!!!!!!!!

Dhoni was defensive cause of bowling attack he had. I am sure kohli will look same with bowling attack and experienced attack dhoni got.

I don't like it when Indian players talk like this. When did the Indians catch the Pakistani decease of trash talking? Normally our squad is pretty disciplined about these things. Someone needs to have a word with Pujara, ask him to shut up, and focus on scoring runs. That's what he's there for.

He did not do it at Adelaide in 2014. Dhoni had Plan A or Plan B and quite often resorted to plan B - defensive fields. I agree India's bowling attack has been poor in the past. I hope this is not another false dawn...

In any case, too much hype has been made already...let the games begin.

Sorry Adelaide 2014 was more to do with his aggressive batting and the will to go for a target which Indian teams of the past would not have gone for. His captaincy on the field was not that brilliant. Australia scored at a very high run rate in both the innings and he was not able to stem the flow of runs. He looked clueless when our great bowlers were spraying the ball on both sides of the wicket. Dhoni faced the same issue with out bowlers, except for Zaheer and Ishant, none of the Indian bowlers were able to keep the runs in check. Also Kohli made the biggest blunder even before he took the field by selecting Karn Sharma. The guy was hammered around on the pitch were Nathan Lyon took 12 wickets.

I am still not convinced that the Indian bowling attack will be able to take the lead outside Asia. This has always been the problem for the pace bowlers from India. I hope I am wrong and they are able to deliver on the promise they showed in the home season. If the fast bowlers leak runs and allow the opposition to get away, no point in blaming the spinner on a green track (Ashwin or Jadeja cannot do much).

Agree with everything you say, yes KArn sharma was a blunder. I never said his captaincy was brilliant. I said it was different than Dhoni, who went on defensive very quickly abroad which i did not see in Kohli. Yes, he also resorted to defensive fields, but not before trying some imaginative fields!

We will know the answer to this tomorrow. Any captain needs his bowling attack to complement him. Dhoni never got it from Umesh Yadav/Varun Aaron et all. Only Ishant and Bhuvi gave him the control, that is the reason for him to prefer them over the pacy duo. I just hope the last 2 years has changed the Indian pacers and they are able to bowl good lines which makes the job of captaining the side mush easier.

That is where i think fitness comes into play. As i said above, this indian team is fit, so bowlers should not get tired easily or injured easily (except shami). Earlier bowlers used to bowl 5-6 overs and in each over 2 loose balls and by the time they reach 6th over, 4 trundling loose balls would be gift wrapped.

Dhoni would then try and bring Ashwin in, but by that time opposition would be 100-150/1 and he would be of zero impact, because captain has to guard runs.

I am hoping, the script is different this time, but i know hope is a bad thing!

Pujara really need a good performance away from Asia. He is beast on spinning tracks, however he have pretty mediocre stats on seaming conditions. If India wants to push SA, he needs to step up. I hope his experience in county games help him with seaming/swinging conditions.

Damn so excited for the series, probably best series to kick off new year.

Won't be surprised if he fails. He is too late on his defence even in Indian pitches. He gets lbw and bowled far too often for his liking. Even Dasun Sanaka had him bowled in the recent series. :(

Are you saying India will lose 0-3?

We are pretty hopeful. Hopeful of competing well. The bowlers are faster, and smarter this time. I don't expect them to spray it all over the pitch. Also the fitness allows them to bowl with the same intensity in the 2nd and 3rd spells too. This team can take 20 wickets, only the batting has to click. But SA do have a ridiculous bowling attack and some decent batsmen.

To be fair, Pujara has scored runs in South Africa before. This will be his third tour there.

Not really. Anything other than a 0-3 whitewash will be a bonus.

No team in the works is good enough to dominate overseas unless they're facing Zimbabwe.

India are good enough to give a good performance and maybe win a test.

Dhoni started aggressive too.Became defensive after overseas losses.Lets see how Kohli copes. His selections are a bit weird.Fully expect Dhawan and Rohit to play

Ready to dominate overseas with Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as your top seamers? That'll cast terror into the souls of the opposition alright..

I would love to be proven wrong, but the best result that an Indian fan would hope for is a 0-2 result. For all the hype around the Indian quick bowlers, they have NOT been tested in conditions where they are expected to lead the wickets column. They have always been support casts (except for an odd performance here and there) and that is my biggest worry. The proteas could well play a few shots and put them under pressure. What next? You can't expect an Ashwin or Jadeja to turn the tide consistently..

Our batsmen could score a few runs, but will they outscore the Proteas bats? I doubt. It is all good to be optimistic, but being prepared to face reality is something not bad. And though I will be one of those countless fans with crossed fingers looking for a good series, I am a nervous one too thinking "What if it goes pear shape?". This series could make or break this team. Fingers crossed it turns out to be the former but I say this more with hope and a prayer in the lips .. :)

Love your confidence. But this is not even 2nd or 3rd best ever to tour SA. India has no miracle bowlers in their line up. Just steady batsmen who can falter in a cluster. Average wicket keeping batsman. Big Tail. I am not sure what the hell he is talking about.

"dominate" overseas?
"Competitive" would be more than okay, but dominate?
Not even South Africa "dominated" overseas, the best touring side in the history of the game.
He'll have to live up to that now.

I also expect 0-2 loss for India while India eking out a draw somehow. Both Batting/Bowling are very fragile. You need atleast a single ace bowler in your side. India's ace bowlers are spinners who are ineffective in SA.

Lots being said about India have a fast bowling all rounder in Hardik Pandya this time around...Hardik is decent for limited overs cricket but I highly doubt if he will be effective as a test all rounder.

I remember same notion being put out in the media for the 2014 Australia tour. Shami, the shining knight in armour for India, got smashed for 4.63 RPO throughout the tour if I remember correctly.

A lot of hype for India's improved pace bowling. Let them do the talking on the pitch first before declarations of these sorts.

TBF most teams get rolled over in Australia. We almost won in Adelaide. Drew in MCG and SCG. We did pretty well there.

Road pitches (most runs scored in series in history of test cricket) after philip huges tragedy when every aus bowler looked out of form. Let's see how much virat and his team does this time in aus.

Lots being said about Pandya but from what i have seen he is not a special type bowler. He is going to be a massive flop in SA. He won't do good with the bat and with the bowl there is a slight chance. But i dont think he wont be extra ordinary.

Middle order of this Indian team is fragile as compared to past one.
I hope we will have a good series. All the best.

Yes. Definitely. 2010 we drew because of our bowlers. 1992/96 lesser said the better.

Didn't India match SA's first innings totals in the 2nd and third Test (2010)?
Only Kohli from the current side would have a shout of making India's formidable line up of the 2000's.

Quite a poor Test for Pujara, he might be dropped for the last one I suppose.

Kohli seems to be the only batsman who can deal with the Saffers at the moment.

Why doesn't IND try to open with CP? He is like Azhar Ali - pulling down the team from #3. At home, he is a different beast, but I guess if given chance, there are few others who can do that better - for example Sharma ji; he'll kill some bowling on Indian wickets from #3. CP is playing enough balls actually, just that he has no intention at all to score (he has definitely more shots than Azhar), hence in away Tests, he stagnates the score board and eventually gets out.

The one you had was benched, not necessary that even that would have done any great. But with this, you give away hope before the match starts.

Pujara was pretty much loud mouth before this series even his interviews.

Is Pujara averaging 10 or 12? I can't remember but I think he failed in the last series to SA as well.

His cowardly batting is a hindrance for India. I agree with MMHS that he needs to open.

India have high quality openers( they failed but I give it more to instability created by some absurd team selection by their captain). Maybe this is why CP doesn't need to open.

Azhar's case is different altogether. He doesn't have any decent opener. So he has no other option than to face new ball.

I have thought this for a while. When it comes to surviving but on flat batting surfaces his dead batting and lack of shot range isn't helpful at all.

The Ganguly, Bhajji, Laxman, Tendulkar, Dravid, Yuvi, Veru, Dhoni, ZK if ever toured SA should be the best one ever.

Have never been sold on Pujara, there is no fear factor in his batting, he can be easily managed and controlled by bowlers.

Pujara the biggest HTB of modern era. He should only feature on home series and Rahane on away series.

As expected 3-0 is ON
