After the 60-run loss to England in the 4th Test in Southampton, India skipper Virat Kohli lauded the home team’s fighting spirit and conceded that India were always under pressure chasing the target of 245 because of England’s good bowling performance.

“(We) thought we were in with a fifty-fifty chance last night and Didn’t get a good start (today) and England applied a lot of pressure,” said Kohli during the post-match presser, adding “But we were always under the pump. The pressure was non-stop.”

Off spinner Moeen Ali claimed 4 for 71 in the second innings to add to his 5 for 53 in the first.

India were in a spot of bother at 22 for three early in the run chase before Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane revived India with a stand of 101 runs for the fourth wicket, but Kohli rued lack of partnerships otherwise.

“Me and Jinks (Rahane) did well with that partnership, but if you don’t have a partnership before or after it becomes difficult,” said Kohli, who went past the 500-run mark for the series.

Despite enjoying the upper hand twice in the match, India failed to capitalise as England’s lower-order made telling contributions and the Indian skipper hinted that those handy contributions made a big difference.

“It is quite handy to have guys who can strike the ball well in those positions, said Kohli. “Once those partnerships get going, it gets frustrating. Every team feels like that, when the lower-order gets runs. They were braver in tough situations than us. Those contributions from lower-order have been significant.”

After being 86 for 6 in the first innings, England’s last four manage to add 160 runs with Ali adding 40 and Sam Curran scoring 78. In the second innings, Curran’s valuable 46 coupled with Jos Buttler’s 69 meant England’s last five added 150 as opposed to the 122 by the top five.

“Every team feels like that, when the lower-order gets runs. They were braver in tough situations than us. Those contributions from lower-order have been significant. Would like to congratulate Sam Curran, a nice find for England and he’s doing well,” added Kohli

Really admire his hardwork and feeling a bit bad for him but e needs to improve his captaincy. his captaincy has cost them 2 matches.

Simple. We are not good enough.

The difference was the lower order contribution.

He cannot bat for 10 others.

The others need to have a good look at their selves and ask why they could not answer the call of their captain.

That is true. Feeling bad for him. But at times his captaincy was poor letting the lower order score easily.

A very good after match presentation by Kohli, he gave credit to opposition and praised them.

Started to like him as a captain, he is getting us near hopefully bowling becomes even more stable.under him..and sadly I wish Dhoni was in the test team just not as a captain but middle order batsman.

You can't ask more from your bowlers (apart from Ashwin maybe). It's the batsmen that need to help Kohli out.

I do think that he likes to revel in his role as a one man band at times.

Dhoni never performed well in tests under trying conditions.

Wrong. Dhoni was India's 2nd highest run getter in England in 2014 and 3rd highest run getter in 2011.

He was also India's 4th highest run getter in SA in 2011.

Dhoni was the captain and the wicketkeeper on all of those tough tours and still managed to outscore most of the other specialist batsmen.

It has become a fashion nowadays on PP to bash Dhoni because he's past his prime but don't try to undervalue what Dhoni brought to the side because I haven't seen a single test wicketkeeper do so much by himself in all my years of watching cricket.

India would be kicking themselves for losing the 1st Test and this Test. They were on top for quite large portions in both of those games.

This was probably golden opportunity for India in England , I doubt India will again get same weak Test Team in next 15 years.

Yes unfortunately he opted out of Test Cricket. It would have been better if he stayed for Test Cricket and opted out of LOIs (like Sachin, Dravid...) That would have done well for both formats! He may laugh at us when we say to go out of LOIs and ask to stay in Tests, but its better if he understands the right intentions of proper fans! I always felt that he was needed for Tests as a player! I don't think he is interested to ghost captain in Tests, he was not that keen when he was full time captain either! And it will be better if he stops ghost captaining in LOIs (more than his lacking in batting) because this will either help Kohli learn captaincy on his own or someone else replaces him as captain (Rohit?)
