After the 60-run loss to England in the 4th Test in Southampton, India skipper Virat Kohli lauded the home team’s fighting spirit and conceded that India were always under pressure chasing the target of 245 because of England’s good bowling performance.
“(We) thought we were in with a fifty-fifty chance last night and Didn’t get a good start (today) and England applied a lot of pressure,” said Kohli during the post-match presser, adding “But we were always under the pump. The pressure was non-stop.”
Off spinner Moeen Ali claimed 4 for 71 in the second innings to add to his 5 for 53 in the first.
India were in a spot of bother at 22 for three early in the run chase before Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane revived India with a stand of 101 runs for the fourth wicket, but Kohli rued lack of partnerships otherwise.
“Me and Jinks (Rahane) did well with that partnership, but if you don’t have a partnership before or after it becomes difficult,” said Kohli, who went past the 500-run mark for the series.
Despite enjoying the upper hand twice in the match, India failed to capitalise as England’s lower-order made telling contributions and the Indian skipper hinted that those handy contributions made a big difference.
“It is quite handy to have guys who can strike the ball well in those positions, said Kohli. “Once those partnerships get going, it gets frustrating. Every team feels like that, when the lower-order gets runs. They were braver in tough situations than us. Those contributions from lower-order have been significant.”
After being 86 for 6 in the first innings, England’s last four manage to add 160 runs with Ali adding 40 and Sam Curran scoring 78. In the second innings, Curran’s valuable 46 coupled with Jos Buttler’s 69 meant England’s last five added 150 as opposed to the 122 by the top five.
“Every team feels like that, when the lower-order gets runs. They were braver in tough situations than us. Those contributions from lower-order have been significant. Would like to congratulate Sam Curran, a nice find for England and he’s doing well,” added Kohli
