At least 10 labourers were killed in Balochistan's Gwadar district on Saturday as unidentified assailants opened fire at the construction site where they were working, Levies sources said.

Unidentified gunmen on motorcycles opened indiscriminate fire on the labourers working at a road in Gwadar's Pishgan area, killing eight labourers on the spot, Levies sources confirmed.

Two of the injured labourers died while they were being rushed to District Headquarters Hospital, they added.

Examine: The tough road to corridor

"All the labourers were shot at close range," said senior levies official Muhammad Zareef.

The assailants attacked the men at two separate construction sites three kilometres apart along the same road. They then fled the scene.

Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti also confirmed the death toll while speaking to DawnNews. Condemning the incident, he said, "We will not bow down before terrorists."

The slain labourers belonged to Sindh's Naushahro Feroze district. Their remains will be handed over to their family members later in the day.

Frontier Corps, police and levies personnel have reached the spot and an investigation is underway.

The incident occurs as Pakistan and China inks agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in various sectors between the two countries on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum, which is underway in Beijing at the moment.

China is also developing the warm water Gwadar port, a prominent feature of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) plan. The CPEC project — with an investment of $46 billion and the Gwadar port as its lynchpin — is billed to be a 'game-changer' and manifestation of strategic partnership between Pakistan and China.

The government has deployed a Maritime Security Force (MSF) and Special Security Division (SSD) to protect projects under CPEC, including Gwadar and other coastal areas. The forces have been deployed to ensure safety of locals and foreigners working on CPEC projects.

However, the road where the labourers were working was not a specific CPEC-funded project; it was a part of a network of connecting roads that are part of the corridor.

Though no group has admitted responsibility for the shootings, past attacks in the region have been carried out by separatists who view construction projects as a means to take over their land.

Separatist militants in Balochistan have long waged a campaign against the central government for decades, demanding a greater share of the gas-rich region's resources.

Security officials have said previously that militants trying to disrupt construction on the economic corridor have killed 44 workers since 2014, all of whom were Pakistani but often hailing from other provinces.

Armed militants attacked at labourers camp in Turbat on April 11, 2015 killing 20 labourers. The defunct Baloch separatist organization Baloch Liberation Front had claimed the responsibility for the attack. Similarly, in April this year, four Sindhi labourers were gunned down by suspected militants while working on a road that was under construction in Kharan district.

Inna lillah e Wa inna eleh e rajeoon.

38 people dead in terror attacks in last 2 days. Where is the security machinery ?

Busy giving clean chit to Princess Maryam.

Weren't you the one who claimed this act of our security forces as a master stroke which will reap benefits once the JIT announces its decision?

I've heard some magical mathematical formulas which equate once solider of ours to 10 soldiers of enemy countries, I just wish those 10 in 1 soldiers protect us.

I never said it was a masterstroke, I said they backed down from their own stance and tried to reason that maybe because they will go harder in JIT. They shouldn't have backed down from their stance.

Got to say this is one area where India is definitely ahead of Pakistan, they seem to suffer mystery terrorist bombings on a much lesser scale. That's quite a black mark against Pakistan considering the military is supposed to be much more closely involved in govt than in India.

There again, Turkey is suffering from similar problems at the moment. It makes you wonder.

Whenever such an incident takes place I don't feel bad for the victims, I really feel bad for the sons, daughters and the wives left behind who now have to live in a country like Pakistan without their husband/mother/father. It really breaks my heart thinking about the families of the people who die in such incidents. This morning the wives and the kids of these laborers would have never thought such a thing could happen to their father but in just a matter of hours their lives have turned upside down. So sad. As far the victim goes, it's wrong and shouldn't have happened but he has left the world and doesnt feel the pain the same way his family feels.

I hope victims of such crimes get Jannah and the criminals rot in hell. It really warms my heart thinking that there will be justice for all one day even if they were kings or just poor laborers.

Syed Bhaee you might have missed my post in Dawn Leaks thread.

I agree with you. But I ll say if there was no security breach than all those people including Pervez, Fatmi & Rao sahib should have been acquitted.

If there was Security breach than if whatever was sold to Us by establishment through 15 odd journalists at Tv than the Establishment should have provided those hardcore evidences in Dawn leaks Inquiry Commision aswell and shouldn't have compromised, shouldn't have developed consensus.

If there was security breach than all including the princess should have been punished.

As per Dr.Shahid Pm sahib almost wept infront of General Raheel in October that if you want to proceed go ahead but " Aapki bhee tou Beti hai ". Than Is she the only daughter in Pakistan ? If Dr. Shahid is lying than why doesn't anyone including General Raheel sahib or Pm sahib drag him to Court ?

If General sahib pardoned her than did he take Oath under Pakistan Constitution & Army Act etc or did he take Oath on the hand of Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif sahib ?

If pardon/forgiveness was the way forward than all those involved should have been forgiven.

I have now a huge issue with our Establishment. They sell something through their media stooges (which might be 100 % truth or partial truth) but backdoors where it really matters ie in the corridors of power they go completely opposite. These are Dirty Sick games.

National Security is compromised.

Quite a lot know it, many are afraid to say it out loud. Never make something so big and powerful that it's impossible to control.

Fine Enough when it comes to Aftermath. Ok fine that is the real life which starts after death. Ok.

But what about this Life ? What about the Pain and Misery the families feel lifelong ? Even financial support can't help wrt emotions when you lose your loved ones unnaturally.

Where is the State ? PM sahib goes to China & who caused it ? Why left right these attacks keep on occuring ? Why ?

And to think these folks were working as labourers and money would be really tight in the family as it is, and then the sole bread earner is removed from the world in such cruel manner. The politicians (IK and NS included) are just good for statements in the media and some "ta'aziyat" for photo opportunity. I hope the government takes the families of these people under their wings or atleast give some financial support.

Yes, I emphasised quite a lot on the point that they families left behind will suffer till death

Exactly. Politicians aside, the general population, including me, are also good for statements only. Nobody honestly cares anymore, everyone is just numb to this. Even my first thought while reading this was, at least it's not in Islamabad so my family is safe from this. Pakistani is failing because people only care about themselves and hardly care about anyone else be it NS or the local sabzi wala.

There's a good poem for this situation,

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Everyone who doesn't care about this or will forget about this in a few days might end up in the same situation, some sooner than others. A poor person's life is a joke in this country.
