I attended the Palestine Solidarity Campaign Lobby event in Parliament today.
Over 100 people from around the Country came to Westminster to directly lobby their MP on two key issues.
1. Illegal settlements. - There are no 'two sides' to this story. Israel builds illegal settlements in total contravention of international law. Amnesty amongst others are now calling for a boycott of Israeli goods from these Illegal Settlements a trade valued at c. £200m a year with the EU. This is something our MPs should have no problem agreeing with unless they want to admit they have no respect for the rule of law and/or their silence is bought/brought about by a need to kowtow to the Israel Lobby.
2. Child Detention- I always new this sort of thing went on but researching it I was horrified at the extent and the blatant violations of all norms of decency.
500-700 Palestinian children (defined as under 18) are 'detained' every year
They are detained under 'Military law' in the Occupied Territories and subject to night-time arrests, blindfolded and shackled, interrogation without access to lawyers or their parents being present, physical violence, solitary confinement etc. Many of these cases are well documented. Frequently the children are so psychologically stressed and traumatized they sign confessions (in Hebrew which they can't even read). There is 99% conviction rate in these 'military courts'.
It is an example of Israeli Apartheid that Israeli settlers in these illegal settlements are not subject to these 'military courts'. The PSC / DCIP demands are quite simple detention only as last resort, no night time arrests, no military courts without due process/access to lawyers/parents, no interrogation without audio-visual recordings, no use of confessions derived from ill-treatment/torture etc
What really brought it home to me is the shocking fact for something as 'innocent' as stone throwing children can be sentenced to up 10-20 years in jail. This is horrific. In the Holy Land where the 3 major Abrahamic faiths all tell and celebrate the story of David and Goliath, modern children can be given such totally disproportionate punishment for an act which was deemed 'heroic' in all the Holy Books of these lands.
