And on his 72nd birthday (10th March), Ijaz Butt, as the Pakistan board president, carried out the deepest cull of a senior cricket team in many years, in the wake of the side's pathetic performance on the 2009-10 tour of Australia.

Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf were banned from playing for Pakistan for an indefinite period, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan got one-year bans, and Shahid Afridi and Umar and Kamran Akmal were fined Rs 2-3 million ($24,000-35,000) for various misdemeanours and put on six-month probations.

When Younis finally took over in 2009, it only took a few months for him to lose the dressing room.

Ijaz Butt had his faults but he knew how to keep egos in check. He refused to appoint Afridi as permanent captain before the 2011 World Cup and was naming him as captain on series-by-series basis.

Moreover, his decision to appoint Misbah as Test captain in 2010 was a stroke of genius. He was the ideal person to lead the team at that time, and his career was pretty much over before Ijaz Butt brought him back as captain out of the blue.

Would certainly take Ijaz Butt over someone like Ehsan Mani who cuts a weak figure and clearly lacks authority and confidence. He is basically a yes man.

The decision to bring Misbah back from the wilderness turned out to be a sensationally good move. It is true that any 'sane' person wouldn't have done it. So for that one decision alone, Ijaz deserves credit.

The rest of his tenure was utterly wacky. From telling the ECB that they had "conspired to defraud Pakistan" to random and daily bannings, to presiding over the spotfixing scandal in such an unprofessional way - it was all a big mess.

By far the biggest fool to run the cricket board during unquestionably the worst time for Pakistan cricket.

The guy had his faults, but he was not the worst. He knew how to keep these jahil cricketers in their line.

Younis Khan and Yousuf were to be blamed themselves for what they had done. Ijazz Butt did not show any leniency and ousted them from the team right away.

Ijazz Butt did not care what media had so say about himself. Media hated him due to Younis Khan. Younis always had the media backing, but he had no manners and was always in a mood to fight with anyone.

After the fixing fiasco, while Butt made Misbah the captain and it proved to be one of the best decision that our PCB ever made. But another thing that often gets overlooked is that Ijazz Butt knew how to deal with the dumb cricketers.

Today we see Amir and Sarfraz making such statements. Ijazz Butt would throw showcause notices to any player who made dumb statements. Everyone was kept in line, and we barely had nay dumb statements coming from the player.

Ijazz Butt did the right thing by keeping Afridi captain on temporary basis and never permanent.

Initially, Ijaz Butt had supported the prosecution of Amir, stating that "his board will not make any appeals for leniency", however on 19 September he attacked the England cricket team during a press conference, accusing them of a conspiracy to "defraud Pakistan cricket" by accepting their own bribes. He stated that:

"This is not a conspiracy to defraud bookies but a conspiracy to defraud Pakistan and Pakistan cricket... We have taken it in hand to start our own investigations. We will shortly reveal the names of the people, the parties and the bodies involved in this sinister conspiracy and we also reserve the right to sue them for damages... There is loud and clear talk in bookie circles that some English players have taken enormous amounts of money to lose the match [the third ODI]. No wonder there was such a collapse."

He was diagnosed with dementia very soon after he left the pcb role and his condition worsened over time. My guess is some of his erratic behavior was due to his illness of which he himself wasn’t aware. So unfortunate
