13 Killed in grenade attack in Karachi

Ten people, including six women and four children, were killed while several others were injured in a grenade attack on a truck near Baldia Town's Mawach Goth area in Karachi on Saturday, police and rescue officials said.

Senior official of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Raja Umer Khattab, said that initial investigations showed that it was a grenade attack. He said that the grenade exploded before it could hit the floor of the vehicle.

He said that initial investigations showed that the attackers were on a motorcycle.


South Zone DIG Javed Akbar Riaz said that the incident took place around 9:45pm and the truck was carrying between 20-25 people. The passengers were returning home after attending a marriage ceremony, he said.

Additional police surgeon Dr Qarar Abbasi said that 10 dead bodies had been brought to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital. Six women and four children were among the victims.

He said that 10 others who were injured in the incident had been brought to the hospital for treatment. He said that all four of the deceased children were male and between 10 to 12 years of age.

Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab took notice of the incident and sought details from the Keamari SSP. In a statement, he said that investigators were probing the incident from different angles.


Expressing regret over the loss of human lives, the administrator directed officials to provide the best possible medical treatment to those who were injured.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed police officials and the district administration to shift the injured to nearby hospitals.

The chief minister also sought a report from the provincial transport minister about the vehicle, enquiring whether the truck belonged to Sindh or another province.

He also directed the transport minister to provide details about the vehicle's fitness certificate and the cause of the explosion.

Shah also directed the health secretary to shift the injured to the Burns Centre of Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment.

KARACHI: Twelve members of an extended family, all women and young boys, lost their lives and several others suffered burn injuries in a grenade attack on a mini-truck on the outskirts of the city on Saturday night.

A senior police officer, who did not wish to be named, told Dawn that it was an act of terrorism.

He said personnel from the Bomb Disposal Squad had found the lever of the grenade [at the crime scene] and confirmed that a Russian-made device had been used in the attack.

The incident occurred in the Baldia area within the limits of the Madina Colony police station.

“We are investigating the incident from different angles to ascertain whether the perpetrators were terrorists from some ethnic group or an extremist group,” said the official.

Police term it an act of terrorism

Karachi police chief Imran Yaqoob Minhas told the media that the aspect of personal enmity was also being probed as all victims came from the same family. The family originally hailed from Swat.

Local police and the Counter-Terrorism Department are both investigating the incident.

Senior CTD official Raja Umer Khattab, who examined the spot, said initial probe revealed that the attackers were riding a motorcycle and that the grenade had exploded before falling into vehicle.

Karachi South Zone DIG Javed Akbar Riaz told Dawn that the truck was carrying 20 to 25 people who were returning from a marriage ceremony.

Keamari SSP Fida Husain Janwari said the driver had picked up the family from Pareshan Chowk in Baldia.

“We received 10 bodies — six women and four children — at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital,” said Additional Police Surgeon Dr Qarar Abbasi. He said around an equal number of the injured, including women and children, had also been brought to the hospital.

Two of the injured died during treatment, said Dr Abbasi.

Edhi Foundation spokesperson and an official of Chhipa rescue service said at least 10 people were injured in the explosion.

Administrator of Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab while taking notice of the incident issued directives for proper medical treatment of the injured.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah issued directives for taking care of the families of the victims.

The deceased were identified as Mrs Shaheen Khan, 45; her daughter Nusrat, 25; Sufiyan Shamsheer, 13; his brother Hammad, 11; Usman Khan, 15; Ms Aqsa Sher Ali, 25; Mrs Sharafat Meraj Khan, Mrs Malkiat, 50, Mrs Saleema, 47, one-year-old Zoyan Izhar; Salman, 12; and Mrs Sadaqat Dildar, 40.

There are many such groups within Pakistan and India as well. Not everything can be blamed on the arch rival. Karachi is particular is well known for being a criminal hotspot.

Motive behind Karachi mini truck attack remains unknown

KARACHI: The motive behind the grenade attack last night on a mini truck, near the Mawach Goth area, remains unknown and no case has been registered of yet, it emerged on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday night, between 9:30pm and 10pm, when a mini truck full of children and women was returning from a wedding.

A grenade was thrown towards the truck by unknown assailants on motorbikes who promptly rode away.

According to police, the resultant blast killed 13 people in total, including seven women and six children, while seven injured people are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital.

Geo News reported that the family had gone from Sherpao Colony in Landhi to attend a wedding in Abidabad, Baldia Town. The family hails from Swat.

Affected family complain of negligence
Members of the affected family have expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment of their injured relatives and the ongoing investigation.

The brother of a woman undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital said that no proper care is being provided and the doctors have to be repeatedly called to check in on the patient.

He added that "no Sindh government representative" has contacted them.

Russian-made grenade
According to police, a Russian-made RGD1 (brown body) grenade was used in the attack, the lever of which was also found at the scene of the blast.

The police added consultations regarding the registration of the case are underway.

The case is likely to be registered in the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) under terrorism clauses.

Police have recorded the statements of eyewitnesses, including the truck driver, regarding the blast.
